Chapter 9 - THE MADISON LABORATORY AMBUSH

The air inside the Great Hall of the fortress dropped to a suffocating freeze as Eleanor’s words echoed off the stone walls.
Julian Kane stared at Emily’s stomach with wide, manic eyes, shaking his head in frantic denial.
“A server?” Julian yelled, his voice cracking into high-pitched hysteria.
“You are trying to hand a twelve-billion-dollar empire to a random girl off the street?”
“Any gold-digger in Chicago could claim she slept with Daniel!”
“This is an insult to the family!”
“This is an illegal coup orchestrated by Noah to steal our legitimate board seats!”
Before Noah could draw his weapon, Eleanor held up her left hand, cutting off the room with absolute authority.
“The Kane family does not operate on rumors, Julian,” Eleanor said coldly.
“Nor do we operate on sentiment.”
“We operate on cold, indisputable genetic science.”
Eleanor turned to the encrypted satellite console mounted on the sideboard.
“Connect the Madison laboratory feed,” Eleanor commanded.
The large display screen above the stone fireplace flickered, connecting a high-definition video link to the private genomics research wing at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
On the screen appeared Dr. Julian Vance, his white lab coat stained with sweat, his eyes wide behind his glasses.
Beside him stood the chief geneticist of the university, holding a certified, embossed medical dossier.
“Dr. Vance,” Eleanor spoke through the microphone.
“Report to the Council.”
Dr. Vance cleared his throat, holding the document directly up to the high-resolution camera.
“Madame Kane, Council members,” Dr. Vance began, his voice trembling with exhaustion and excitement.
“We have completed the non-invasive prenatal paternity assay using cell-free fetal DNA isolated from Emily Foster’s maternal blood.”
“We compared the genetic markers directly against the authenticated bone marrow sample taken from Daniel Kane’s remains at the Cook County morgue.”
“The test evaluated twenty-four distinct short tandem repeat loci.”
Dr. Vance flipped to the conclusion page, pointing to the official statistical analysis.
“The probability of paternity is ninety-nine point nine nine nine percent.”
“The fetus carried by Emily Foster is without any scientific doubt the biological offspring of Daniel Kane.”
Emily exhaled a long, shuddering breath, a tear tracing a path down her cheek.
Hearing the scientific truth spoken aloud felt like Daniel’s hand reaching out from the grave, touching her forehead, and validating every moment of love they had shared in secret.
In the Great Hall, Cousin Julian slumped into his chair, his face entirely devoid of blood.
Senator Bradley Kane dropped his head into his hands, knowing that under Grandfather Patrick’s irrevocable trust, their claims to the board were entirely wiped out.
Under the law, Emily Foster was now the legal custodian of fifty-one percent of the Kane empire.
Suddenly, on the video feed from Madison, a sharp, metallic crash echoed in the background.
Dr. Vance whipped his head around in terror.
The laboratory doors behind him were blown inward by a concussive breaching charge.
Through the smoke, four tactical operatives in unmarked gray combat gear stormed the sterile testing room.
Automatic gunfire erupted through the speaker system, the sharp cracks deafening the members of the Great Hall.
The chief geneticist was hit in the chest and thrown backward across the stainless-steel centrifuges.
“Vance! Get down!” Noah roared into the satellite microphone.
Dr. Vance scrambled beneath the reinforced lab counter, clutching the paper file and the digital hard drive to his chest.
One of the masked operatives stepped forward, raising an assault rifle to execute the doctor at point-blank range.
Before the trigger could be pulled, two rapid gunshots cracked from the hallway behind the intruders.
The operative collapsed forward onto the tiled floor.
A team of four Kane family tactical operators—the security detail Eleanor had dispatched to escort the doctor—flooded the room, returning fire with lethal precision.
A chaotic firefight played out in real-time across the monitor in the Great Hall.
Within forty-five seconds, the four attackers lay dead on the laboratory floor, their weapons clattering across the sterile tiles.
The lead Kane security officer stepped over the bodies, reached down, and ripped the balaclava from the face of the lead attacker.
The officer turned the attacker's face directly toward the camera lens.
The dead man’s jaw was covered in a distinctive anchor tattoo across the neck.
Noah Kane’s eyes narrowed into slits of deadly recognition.
“That is Marco Rossi,” Noah said, his voice dropping into a register that made the hair on Emily’s neck stand up.
Noah turned slowly away from the screen, his dark, murderous gaze locking directly onto Senator Bradley Kane.
“Marco Rossi was your personal chief of security for the last eight years, Uncle Bradley,” Noah said.
“His salary is paid directly through your senatorial campaign committee.”
Senator Bradley stood up, his face purple with rage and panic.
“I know nothing about this!” Bradley shouted, backing away toward the heavy timber doors.
“He must have been bribed!”
“He was acting on his own!”
“Sit down, Bradley!” Eleanor’s voice boomed like rolling thunder through the Great Hall.
The two female guards beside Emily raised their weapons, aiming directly at the Senator’s chest.
The Senator froze in place, his breath wheezing through his parted lips.
On the screen in Madison, Dr. Vance crawled out from beneath the counter, his hands shaking as he held up the intact digital drive.
“The legal filing is complete, Mr. Kane,” Dr. Vance gasped, his spectacles hanging from one ear.
“The genetic certificate has been uploaded to the federal probate registry in Washington, D.C.”
“The court has issued an automatic injunction.”
“The entire Kane voting trust is officially frozen under Emily Foster’s legal guardianship as of four minutes ago.”
Emily looked across the immense hall.
The powerful men who had ruled Chicago with iron fists and billions of dollars were cowering in terror before a pregnant woman in a plain wool dress.
Julian Kane began to laugh hysterically, the sound echoing madly off the high timber beams.
“You think you won, Aunt Eleanor?” Julian screamed, glaring at his grandmother with pure, unadulterated venom.
“You think this little waitress and her bastard can save this family?”
“You have no idea what we set in motion!”
“The foreign buyers in Singapore and Rotterdam were promised sixty percent of the shipping terminals!”
“They paid three hundred million dollars upfront to Bradley and me!”
“If that shipment doesn't leave the docks by midnight tomorrow, they will burn every Kane asset from Boston to Miami!”
“They will hunt that girl down and carve Daniel’s baby out of her stomach!”
Noah did not hesitate for another millisecond.
He closed the distance between them in two massive strides, his right hand moving with blurring speed.
He grabbed Julian Kane by the throat and slammed him backward onto the heavy oak table.
The silver goblets and crystal water carafes shattered onto the flagstones.
Noah pulled his combat knife from his vest and drove the blade down, pinning Julian’s expensive tailored sleeve directly into the solid wood of the table.
Julian shrieked in agony, struggling against the steel.
Noah leaned down until his nose was an inch from his cousin’s bleeding face.
“Then you had better start writing down the ship manifests, Julian,” Noah whispered, his voice smooth, terrifying, and utterly merciless.

“Because if a single hair on Emily’s head is harmed, I will not bury you in a family tomb.”
“I will feed you to the fish in Lake Michigan piece by piece.”
