Chapter 6 - The Arrest of the Socialite

The sirens echoed across the private driveway of Harrington Manor before the morning mist had completely burned off.
Inside the grand foyer, Victoria Langley was frantically packing her luxury luggage, tossing silk dresses and designer handbags into monogrammed trunks.
She had already called her father six times, but every call went straight to voicemail.
The Langley family lawyers had issued an urgent advisory to distance the entire family firm from Harrington Capital before trading opened in New York.
The heavy front doors swung open with a sharp, echoing thud.
Two uniformed county sheriffs stepped into the marble entrance hall, accompanied by a female investigator carrying a legal seizure warrant.
Behind them walked Dowager Duchess Evelyn Harrington, leaning heavily on her carved ivory cane, her face pale with fury and confusion.
“What is the meaning of this intrusion?” Evelyn demanded, banging her cane against the floor.
“This is private property belonging to Duke William Harrington!”
The lead investigator stepped forward, pulling a gold badge and an arrest warrant from her pocket.
“Ma’am, this property has been placed under federal receivership by order of the chancery court,” the investigator stated plainly.
“We are here to execute a grand larceny warrant for Victoria Langley.”
Victoria froze at the top of the marble staircase, dropping a velvet jewelry box that clattered down the steps.
Diamond earrings and gold bracelets scattered across the polished floor.
Around her neck, the eighty-carat sapphire necklace—the Star of the Potomac—gleamed under the morning light.
“This is absurd!” Victoria screamed, descending the stairs with forced defiance.
“This necklace was gifted to me by William Harrington!”
“He is the head of this house!”
The investigator signaled to the two deputies, who moved swiftly up the lower steps and blocked Victoria’s path.
“The necklace does not belong to William Harrington, Miss Langley,” the investigator said, reading from the certified court manifest.
“The asset is registered under the Julian Sterling Trust, recorded in 1984 under serial registry number 449.”
“Duke Harrington had no legal authority to remove it, gift it, or transfer title to any third party.”
“The trust’s primary executor, Eleanor Vance Sterling, filed formal charges at seven o’clock this morning.”
Victoria turned toward Evelyn, her voice cracking with terror.
“Tell them, Evelyn!”
“You saw William give it to me!”
“You clapped your hands and said it finally belonged on a real lady’s neck!”
Evelyn Harrington gripped her cane so tightly her knuckles turned bone-white.
The old matriarch felt her knees shake beneath her heavy velvet gown.
For the first time in eighty years, Evelyn realized that the family she ruled with iron cruelty was completely broke.
“Take your hands off me!” Victoria shrieked as a deputy clicked cold steel handcuffs around her manicured wrists.
A female officer carefully unclasped the sapphire necklace from Victoria’s neck, sealing it into an evidence bag.
A crowd of estate staff—gardeners, maids, and kitchen personnel—gathered near the dining hall doors, watching in stunned silence.
None of them stepped forward to help her.
For months, Victoria had treated the staff like invisible servants, barking orders and demanding Eleanor’s personal belongings be thrown into garbage bags.
As Victoria was escorted out through the massive oak doors in handcuffs, news vans were already idling along the estate’s outer perimeter.
The cameras captured every second of the disgraced heiress being pushed into the back of a police cruiser.
