Chapter 4 - The Anatomy Of A Conspiracy

Richard stared down at the sheet of paper sitting in front of him as if it were a live rattlesnake coiled to strike.

The fluorescent lights of the boardroom reflected off his polished silver cufflinks, which suddenly seemed to be trembling against the rosewood table.

"This is an outrage!" Richard roared, his voice bouncing violently off the double-pane acoustic glass of the executive suite.

"You are fabricating evidence to stage an internal purge!"

"You think because your mother is rotting away in a private hospice that you can walk in here and execute family members without oversight?!"

The mention of my mother crossed a line that turned the cold ice in my veins into pure, focused liquid nitrogen.

I did not shout, I did not raise my voice, and I did not slam my fists onto the table like a petulant child.

I simply stood up, slowly and deliberately, pressing both palms flat against the dark wood as I towered over him from the head of the table.

"Mention my mother's health in this boardroom again, Richard," I said, each word landing like a lead weight, "and I will ensure that the remaining seventy-two hours of your freedom are spent in solitary confinement at the Metropolitan Correctional Center."

The sheer, murderous conviction in my tone sucked every bit of oxygen out of the room.

Richard opened his mouth to retort, but nothing came out except a pathetic, wheezing gasp.

"Arthur," I addressed our general counsel without breaking eye contact with my cousin.

"Read the metadata log from the server farm in Secaucus."

Arthur cleared his throat, adjusting his reading glasses as he brought up a secondary document from his portfolio.

"On September 14th at 11:42 PM," Arthur recited with legal detachment, "terminal ID 409-Omega, registered to the office of Senior Vice President Richard Vance, initiated a secure handshake with an encrypted server located in Zurich, Switzerland."

"The recipient account belongs to an entity named 'Aegis Maritime Holdings'."

"Aegis Maritime Holdings was incorporated seventy-two hours earlier in the Cayman Islands."

"The beneficial ownership documents filed with the Cayman registrar list two equal partners."

Arthur paused, looking up over the rims of his glasses directly at Richard.

"Partner number one: Chloe Montgomery."

"Partner number two: Richard Vance."

A collective gasp rippled through the assembled board members, several of whom immediately pushed their chairs backward as if trying to physically distance themselves from a contagious plague.

"You were never going to let Daniel keep that money, were you, Richard?" I asked, a thin, ruthless smile gracing my lips.

"Daniel was just your disposable pack mule."

"He was the arrogant fool whose ego was so swollen he couldn't see that Chloe was sleeping with him on your payroll, not out of passion."

"You convinced him that he was the mastermind behind the greatest corporate coup in American history."

"You told him to grab the blue folder, create a massive public distraction at JFK, and board that plane to Europe."

"And the moment that flight was mid-air over the North Atlantic, you were going to use your executive authority to report him to Interpol for grand larceny."

"You would have appeared as the savior of Vance Global, recovering the supposed assets while Chloe quietly routed eighty million dollars of pre-cleared logistics deposits into your Aegis shell company from Geneva."

"Daniel would have rotted in a federal penitentiary for twenty years, screaming that he was framed, while you and Chloe split the spoils."

Richard’s face had turned an unnatural shade of purple, his fingers clawing at the edges of his legal pad.

"You can't prove any of this in court!" he hissed, his eyes darting frantically toward the boardroom exit doors.

"A metadata log is circumstantial!"

"Anyone could have hacked my terminal!"

"My credentials could have been spoofed by an external bad actor!"

"I am the Senior Vice President of this corporation, and you cannot terminate me without a three-quarters supermajority vote of the independent directors!"

"He’s right about the procedure, Audrey," piped up Thomas Sterling, a veteran board member who had always leaned toward Richard's faction out of financial self-interest.

"Under section 14-B of the corporate bylaws, a shareholder vote is required to strip an executive officer of his seat—"

"Section 14-B applies to officers in good standing, Mr.

Sterling," I interrupted, cutting him off before he could build any momentum for an alliance.

"It does not apply to individuals whose corporate shares have been subjected to an asset forfeiture freeze under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act."

I pulled a second folder from my briefcase, sliding it across the table directly toward Sterling.

"At 6:30 this morning, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York signed a blanket seizure order for all voting shares held by Richard Vance and his associated trusts."

"His voting rights are currently suspended by federal decree."

"Which means," I continued, turning my gaze back to the rest of the board, "my fifty-two percent controlling block is the only vote that exists in this room right now."

I raised my right hand slightly, signaling to the heavy double doors at the back of the boardroom.

The doors swung open instantly, revealing two armed corporate security officers standing beside two federal marshals in dark suits.

"Richard Vance," the lead marshal announced, stepping into the room with a set of documents in hand.

"You are being served with a federal subpoena to appear before the grand jury at 2:00 PM today."

"You are instructed to surrender all passports, access keycards, and electronic devices immediately."

"Any attempt to leave the jurisdiction of the Southern District will result in your immediate remand into custody."

Richard stood up so violently his chair tipped backward, crashing onto the plush carpet with a dull thud.

"You ungrateful little viper!" Richard spat, his composure completely disintegrating into unadulterated rage.

"Your father dragged this family out of the dirt, and you're handing our private affairs over to federal prosecutors?!"

"You think you've won?!"

"You think this ends with me and that idiot Daniel?!"

He leaned over the table, his spit flying across the polished wood as the marshals moved in to secure his arms.

"You have no idea who is really buying our shipping lanes, Audrey!"

"You have no idea who funded the Aegis group!"

"You think Daniel and I came up with an eight-billion-dollar takeover on our own?!"

"There are forces in this city that have been waiting ten years for your mother to die!"

"The moment you set foot in Savannah tomorrow for the port renewal vote, they are going to crush you and your mother’s company into dust!"

The marshals grabbed Richard by his upper arms, hauling him backward toward the exit as he kicked and thrashed against their grip.

"I’ll see you in hell, Audrey!" he screamed, his voice fading down the executive hallway as the heavy boardroom doors clicked shut behind him.

"I’ll see you in hell!"

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Every single director sat frozen in their seats, staring at me as if they were looking at a ghost who had returned from the dead with an executioner’s axe.

I smoothed the lapels of my charcoal jacket, picking up my pen from the table and clicking it once.

"Now," I said, my voice completely returning to its calm, rhythmic corporate authority.

"Item number two on the agenda."

"The Savannah port concession renewal."

"Arthur, bring up the regional logistics forecast."

"We have work to do."
