Chapter 12 - The Blood Tribunal at the Citadel

The Citadel stood like a dark, granite fortress on the rocky cliffs overlooking the Hudson River.

For over a century, the imposing gothic structure had served as the private courthouse and seat of government for the Five River Syndicates.

No municipal police cars ever ventured down the private pine-lined boulevard leading to its iron portcullis.

Here, disputes involving billions of dollars, harbor territories, and blood feuds were settled by ancient bylaws older than the city itself.

At eleven-thirty in the morning, a convoy of four armored Suburbans bearing the black Vale crest arrived at the gates.

Marcus Vale stepped out into the biting river wind, looking immaculate in a tailored midnight-blue three-piece suit.

Beside him stood Sarah, her dark wool coat draped over an elegant ivory silk blouse that highlighted the proud swell of her fourteen-week pregnancy.

Her dark hair was swept into an intricate, aristocratic updo, and her jaw was set with the unbreakable defiance of a mother defending her child.

Vivian walked beside them, draped in full black mourning silk, her silver cane thumping against the stone courtyard like the footsteps of impending doom.

Behind them marched eight of Marcus’s most loyal veterans, their hands resting openly on the grips of automatic sidearms.

They passed through the massive arched oak doors and entered the Great Hall of the Tribunal.

The vaulted room was cavernous, lit by tiered iron chandeliers holding hundreds of flickering amber candles.

Around a circular amphitheater sat nearly forty men and women representing the oldest and most dangerous dynasties in the criminal underworld.

At the center of the elevated dais sat Dominic Vale, looking regal, serene, and untouchable in a tailored gray suit with gold cuff links.

He held the heavy ebony gavel of the Supreme Arbitrator in his right hand, his silver beard trimmed with aristocratic precision.

To his immediate right sat Vincent Sterling, looking nervous but emboldened by the presence of twelve heavily armed men wearing the discreet serpent insignia of the Cassian cartel.

When Marcus, Sarah, and Vivian walked down the center aisle, the low murmur of conversation died into absolute, suffocating silence.

Dominic looked down from the high dais, his warm, benevolent smile belying the black heart beating inside his chest.

“Welcome, Marcus,” Dominic announced, his booming voice echoing off the limestone arches.

“We are honored that you chose to attend this solemn assembly alongside our revered sister-in-law, Vivian.”

His cold, calculating eyes flicked toward Sarah, narrowing slightly with suppressed disdain.

“Though I must question why you brought your catering paramour into the consecrated hall of the High Tribunal.”

A ripple of quiet mockery passed through Vincent Sterling’s faction.

Marcus did not stop walking until he stood at the center of the bronze council floor, directly beneath the judgment chandelier.

“She is not a paramour, Dominic,” Marcus declared, his baritone slicing through the hall like a razor.

“She is Sarah Collins Vale, my lawful wife and the widow of our true heir, Adrian.”

Dominic struck the ebony block with his gavel, the sharp crack silencing the gallery.

“That is precisely why this emergency tribunal was convened today, Marcus,” Dominic said, his tone shifting into one of tragic solemnity.

“Three months ago, this council mourned the tragic loss of Adrian on Black Ridge.”

“We offered our condolences, we sealed the records, and we prepared to transition the shipping lines in accordance with our sacred covenants.”

Dominic stood up, spreading his arms wide to address the gathered syndicate leaders.

“Yet here stands my nephew, attempting to orchestrate a fraudulent coup!” Dominic roared, his voice filled with righteous indignation.

“He produces an unknown woman from the gutters of the city!”

“He claims she carries Adrian’s child, conveniently conceived days before his untimely death!”

“And through this sham marriage, Marcus seeks to seize absolute control of the fifty-one percent maritime voting shares!”

Vincent Sterling stood up from the gallery, nodding eagerly to amplify the accusations.

“It is an insult to Adrian’s memory!” Vincent shouted, his litigators nodding behind him.

“Under Chapter Nine of our charter, fabricating a false heir to overturn a council succession is punishable by immediate execution and forfeiture of all assets!”

Murmurs of agreement rippled through the older council members, their weathered faces turning suspicious and hostile toward Marcus.

Sarah felt the suffocating weight of dozens of murderous eyes locking onto her body, assessing her like a target to be eliminated.

Her heart hammered frantically against her ribs, but she remembered the gentle artist who had died in the flames on Black Ridge.

She stepped forward, pulling away from Marcus’s protective shadow, and stood directly in the center of the bronze ring.

“Look at me, Dominic,” Sarah’s voice rang out, clear, melodic, and entirely devoid of fear.

The entire hall froze, shocked by the sheer audacity of an outsider speaking directly to the Supreme Arbitrator without permission.

“You call me an unknown woman from the gutters,” Sarah continued, her dark eyes locking onto Dominic’s pale face.

“You call my child a fraudulent shadow.”

“Yet you know every detail of my life, don’t you, Dominic?”

“You knew the address of our apartment on Tenth Street.”

“You knew the private clinic where Evan held my hand while they drew my blood.”

“And you knew the exact moment his brake lines were severed outside the private airfield.”

Dominic’s benevolent smile vanished completely, replaced by a dark, murderous scowl that exposed the monster beneath the statesman.

“Guards, remove this insolent creature from the sacred floor!” Dominic ordered, his voice losing its composed veneer.

Four Cassian mercenaries stepped forward from the shadows, their hands reaching under their tactical coats.

Marcus drew his sidearm with lightning speed, cocking the hammer and leveling the barrel directly between Dominic’s eyes.

Instantly, the entire hall erupted into chaotic motion as dozens of bodyguards drew their weapons, creating a standoff of absolute death.

“Nobody touches my wife,” Marcus growled, his voice sending a wave of primal dread through the room.

“Sit down, Dominic,” Vivian commanded, her silver cane striking the floor like thunder.

“Or my son will end your arbitration before the first piece of evidence is submitted.”

Dominic slowly lowered his hand, signaling his mercenaries to hold their positions, confident that his political trap was still airtight.

“Evidence?” Dominic scoffed, leaning over the high bench with arrogant pity.

“What evidence can a traitor produce that overcomes the sworn testimony of this council?”

Sarah reached into her coat, withdrawing the small titanium flash drive Dr. Vance had given his life to protect.

She held it aloft in the amber candlelight, letting every syndicate boss witness the sealed crest of the International Genetic Registry.

“On this drive is the verified DNA baseline of Adrian Vale, certified by Dr. Charles Vance before your hitmen murdered him last night,” Sarah announced to the breathless assembly.

“And on this drive is the final testamentary confession of the man you murdered on Black Ridge.”

Marcus raised his left hand toward the balcony, where his loyal cyber-security technicians had secretly patched into the Citadel’s audiovisual grid.

“Dim the lights,” Marcus commanded.

“Let the council hear the voice of the dead heir.”
