Chapter 8 - The Countdown Begins and the Knock on the Safe House Door

The digital clock on the microwave in the safe house kitchen glowed ominously in the dim light: 4:42 a.m.

Outside, the storm had intensified, howling against the brick walls of the apartment building like a pack of starving wolves.

I sat on the edge of the sofa, the micro-SD card from the Pelican case resting on the coffee table between us like a tiny piece of black glass holding the weight of a war.

“If Sterling receives the heart today,” I said, my voice steady despite the cold terror gripping my chest, “when does the payload activate?”

“The transplant surgery is scheduled for noon today at St. Jude Memorial Hospital,” Thomas replied, checking his wristwatch.

“Once the organ is re-vascularized and starts beating, the countdown begins. Forty-eight hours later, Ronald Sterling will suffer sudden, catastrophic cardiac arrest. The autopsy will record it as hyper-acute transplant rejection—a known medical risk that happens in less than one percent of cases. Nobody will ever trace it back to us.”

“And the financial ledgers?” I asked, pointing to the Pelican case.

“The moment Sterling flatlines, an automated script on this micro-SD card will transmit the complete financial records of the syndicate to the FBI’s anticorruption division, the IRS criminal investigation unit, and every major news outlet in the country.”

I exhaled a long, shaky breath, placing my hand gently over my swollen belly.

Our baby kicked—a sharp, sudden nudge against my palm, as if reminding me she was right here, fighting alongside us for a future free from fear.

“So all we have to do is survive the next forty-eight hours,” I whispered.

Suddenly, a low, metallic chime echoed through the apartment.

It wasn't a phone alarm.

It was the security monitor mounted by the front door.

The motion sensor on the exterior hallway camera had just been triggered.

Thomas froze mid-sentence, his hand instantly dropping toward a concealed holster beneath his sweater.

We both turned our eyes toward the hallway monitor screen on the kitchen wall.

The screen flickered to life in black-and-white static.

Standing in the narrow, dim hallway outside apartment 3B were three men wearing heavy black wool coats and tactical boots.

Their faces were partially obscured by the shadows, but I recognized the broad shoulders and posture of Marcus, the syndicate enforcer from South Station.

“How… how did they find us?” I whispered, my heart slamming against my ribs.

“The rental van,” Thomas cursed under his breath, his face turning pale.

“I thought I lost them, but the garage cameras at South Station must have caught the plates. They tracked us here.”

“Are they going to break in?” I asked, panic rising in my throat.

“The reinforced steel door will hold for a while, but they brought hydraulic cutters,” Thomas said grimly, pulling a compact Glock pistol from his holster and checking the magazine.

“Clara, listen to me. Take the Pelican case and go into the panic room behind the master bedroom closet. Lock the steel door from the inside. There’s a secondary exit tunnel leading to a storm drain three blocks away.”

“What about you?” I demanded, grabbing his arm.

“I’m going to buy you enough time to get out,” Thomas said, offering me a grim, reassuring smile that looked heartbreakingly like Liam’s.

“Now go! Move!”

The first deafening CLANG of a hydraulic ram slamming against the outer apartment door shook the walls of the safe house, sending dust raining down from the ceiling.
