Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Vales

The night of the Grand Plaza Hotel charity gala arrived with overcast skies and a crisp, cold wind.

The grand ballroom of the hotel was decorated in opulent gold and crystal. Over three hundred elite guests—billionaires, city officials, shipping magnates, and celebrities—milled about the room, sipping vintage champagne while a string quartet played softly in the background.

At the far side of the ballroom stood Richard Morgan, a broad, silver-haired man in an expensive tuxedo, talking alongside his daughter, Vanessa.

Vanessa looked stunning in a floor-length emerald silk dress, though her smile was tight and forced.

Standing uncomfortably nearby were Ethan and Margaret Vale.

Ethan looked miserable in his tuxedo, constantly pulling at his collar, while Margaret looked utterly desperate, trying to engage disinterested socialites in conversation. The recent DNA scandal had turned them into social pariahs, and people were actively avoiding them.

Suddenly, the massive double doors of the ballroom swung open.

The master of ceremonies announced into the microphone:

“Announcing Mr. Adrian Moretti and Mrs. Lily Vale.”

The entire ballroom fell into a dead hush.

Every single head turned toward the entrance.

I walked into the ballroom on Adrian’s arm.

I wore a breathtaking, custom-made velvet gown in deep crimson that hugged my figure perfectly. A diamond necklace—a loan from Adrian’s private family vault—glimmered at my throat. My hair was styled in elegant, sweeping waves, and my makeup was flawless, accentuating my features.

Beside me, Adrian looked formidable in a tailored double-breasted black tuxedo, his presence dominating the entire room.

Gasps echoed through the crowd.

“Is that... Lily Vale?” a woman whispered nearby.

“She looks incredible... she doesn't look anything like the victim they described!” another guest murmured.

I kept my chin held high, a confident, serene smile on my lips as Adrian guided me gracefully into the center of the room.

Across the floor, Ethan’s jaw dropped in absolute shock. He stared at me as if he were seeing a ghost. He had never seen me look like this—radiant, powerful, and utterly out of his reach.

Margaret turned pale as a sheet, gripping her champagne glass so tightly it trembled.

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure venom.

Richard Morgan stepped forward, his face red with sudden anger. He marched across the ballroom floor toward us, flanked by two private security guards.

“Moretti!” Richard demanded loudly, drawing the attention of every guest in the room. “Who invited you into this private event? Get out before I have my men throw you out!”

Adrian didn't even blink. He calmly pulled a white card from his pocket and held it up.

“I own forty percent of the real estate holding company that owns this hotel, Richard,” Adrian said smoothly, his voice carrying effortlessly across the silent room. “Technically, you are paying me rent to host this party.”

Richard froze, his security guards stepping back hesitantly.

Vanessa quickly rushed to her father’s side, trying to maintain her composure.

“Adrian,” Vanessa said, forcing a sweet, melodic voice. “This is a charitable event for children's hospitals. Please do not bring your underworld drama into our celebration.”

I took a step forward, looking Vanessa directly in the eye.

“Speaking of children, Vanessa… how is your transition going?” I asked warmly. “I received your white lilies at the hospital. I thought I should thank you in person.”

Vanessa’s smile faltered completely. “Lily, you really shouldn't be here—”

“Why not?” I asked, turning my head toward Ethan, who was cowering behind his mother. “Ethan! Don't stand in the back. Come join your new family!”

Ethan swallowed hard, stepping forward awkwardly. “Lily… please. Don't do this here.”

“Don't do what, Ethan?” I asked, my voice rising slightly so the entire ballroom could hear every word. “Don't remind everyone that you threw your three-day-old son into a freezing storm because you thought you were marrying into money?”

Murmurs erupted across the crowd of guests. Socialites began pointing and whispering at Ethan and Margaret.

Margaret couldn't contain her rage any longer. She pushed her way to the front, her voice screeching through the ballroom.

“She is a liar! She manipulated the court! She seduced this criminal to ruin my son’s career!” Margaret pointed a shaking finger at me. “She came from nothing! She was a penniless accountant who wormed her way into our family!”

I smiled at Margaret with genuine pity.

“You’re right about one thing, Margaret,” I said calmly. “I am an accountant. A very good one, in fact.”

I turned to Adrian. He gave me a single, approving nod.

Adrian reached into his tuxedo jacket, pulled out a small remote control, and pressed the main button.

Instantly, the ambient classical music stopped.

The massive high-definition presentation screens situated around the ballroom—which were supposed to display Morgan Logistics’ corporate promotional videos—flickered and changed.

Spreading across every single giant screen in the room were complex financial balance sheets, bank routing numbers, and international wire transfer documents.

The crowd gasped.

Richard Morgan’s face turned from red to ghost white. “What is the meaning of this? Turn those screens off!”

“Allow me to explain the numbers, ladies and gentlemen,” I said, stepping toward the main screen, my voice echoing clearly over the room’s sound system.

I pointed to the top ledger.

“Seven years ago, sixty million dollars was illegally siphoned from the Moretti Logistics Reserve Fund through seven offshore shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands.”

I traced my finger down to the second ledger.

“For the past seven years, those shell companies have been making monthly capital injections directly into Morgan Logistics’ primary operational accounts—the exact funds used to pay off Mr. Morgan’s bank debts and keep his company afloat.”

I turned around to face Richard and Vanessa Morgan.

“And the authorized signatory on every single one of those offshore shell accounts... is Ms. Vanessa Morgan.”

The ballroom erupted into chaos!

Reporters who had managed to enter the room frantically raised their cameras, flashing pictures of the incriminating financial documents displayed on the walls.

“That's a lie! It’s a forgery!” Vanessa screamed, her refined posture crumbling into raw panic. “Father, tell them it’s a lie!”

Richard Morgan looked like he was having a heart attack. He couldn't speak.

At that exact moment, the heavy double doors of the ballroom burst open once again.

This time, it was not socialites entering.

A dozen uniformed federal agents from the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, led by two prosecutors from the District Attorney’s office, marched firmly into the ballroom.

The lead federal agent stepped straight toward Richard and Vanessa Morgan, pulling out a pair of handcuffs.

“Richard Morgan, Vanessa Morgan,” the agent announced loudly. “You are under arrest for grand larceny, federal wire fraud, money laundering, and tax evasion.”

Vanessa let out a horrific, high-pitched scream as the cold steel handcuffs clicked around her wrists. “Get your hands off me! Do you know who I am? Ethan, help me!”

She turned desperately to Ethan.

Ethan instinctively took three quick steps backward, completely abandoning her, staring in horror as the federal agents restrained his wealthy fiancée.

Vanessa saw his betrayal and spat directly in his direction. “You pathetic coward! I used you!”

As the agents dragged Vanessa and her father out of the ballroom in handcuffs amidst a storm of camera flashes, the crowd parted in absolute shock.

Ethan and Margaret stood alone in the center of the room, utterly ruined, exposed, and stripped of every illusion of wealth and status they had ever possessed.

Margaret slumped onto a velvet chair, clutching her pearls, weeping hysterically as her elite friends turned their backs on her and walked away.

Ethan slowly walked toward me, his eyes wide with desperate, pathetic tears.

“Lily…” he sobbed, reaching out a trembling hand. “Lily, please… I was manipulated by them! You know I loved you! Please, talk to Adrian… tell him to stop this! We can be a family again! For Noah!”

I looked down at the man I had once loved, the man I had given four years of my life to.

I felt no anger toward him anymore. I felt no hatred.

I only felt a deep, overwhelming sense of absolute disgust.

“Do not dare speak my son’s name,” I said, my voice cold as ice. “You rejected him when he was three minutes old. You threw him into the rain. You are nothing to him.”

“Lily, please!” Ethan fell to his knees on the ballroom floor, grabbing the hem of my dress, weeping like a pathetic child. “I’m his father! Give me a second chance!”

Adrian stepped forward smoothly, placing a firm, heavy leather shoe onto Ethan’s wrist, pressing it down gently until Ethan was forced to release his grip on my dress.

Adrian leaned down, his dark eyes locking onto Ethan’s terrified face.

“If you ever approach Lily or Noah again, Ethan…” Adrian whispered, his voice low enough that only Ethan could hear, “I will not bother with courtrooms or financial audits.”

May you like

Ethan whimpered in terror and pulled his hand back, cowering on the floor.

I turned my back on my ex-husband, placed my hand on Adrian’s arm, and walked out of the ballroom, leaving the ruined Vale family behind in the dust of their own creation.
