Chapter 7 - THE DECRYPTION AND THE VIPER IN THE NEST

The underground command center looked like something straight out of a military intelligence film, lined with glowing computer monitors, secure servers, and banks of high-definition security feeds.
Three armed guards stood at attention near the reinforced steel doors, nodding respectfully as Matteo and I entered the room behind Sofia.
Sofia slid into the leather executive chair in front of the main diagnostic terminal, tapping rapidly on the backlit mechanical keyboard.
"Look at this," she murmured, zooming in on a massive hierarchical organizational chart that was rapidly populating across the ultra-wide central display monitor.
Lines of financial data, encrypted bank accounts, digital signatures, and notarized land deeds scrolled past at blinding speed.
"The ledger isn't just a record of what happened fifty years ago," Matteo realized, leaning over Sofia's shoulder as his eyes tracked the incoming data streams. "It's an active, real-time map of every single asset the Morosco syndicate currently controls in the tri-state area."
"And look at the ownership transfers," I added, stepping closer to point a finger at a highlighted corporate name near the bottom of the screen. "That's the exact holding company that bought my grandmother's original bakery in Sicily before it was burned down."
"Not just your grandmother's bakery," a cold, familiar voice echoed softly from the doorway behind us. "They bought half the commercial district using your family's stolen blood money."
I whipped my head around, my breath catching in my throat as Marcus, Matteo's head of security and most trusted tactical advisor, stepped slowly into the room.
He wasn't holding a coffee mug, and he wasn't standing at attention like the other guards.
His right hand rested casually inside the pocket of his dark tailored jacket, but the subtle bulge of a concealed firearm was unmistakable.
Matteo straightened up instantly, every single muscle in his body going rigid as his dark eyes locked onto his longtime confidant.
"Marcus," Matteo said, his voice dropping into a dangerously quiet register that sent a shiver straight down my spine. "What are you doing down here? You're supposed to be securing the perimeter gates."
Marcus let out a low, humorless chuckle, shaking his head slowly from side to side.
"The perimeter gates are already handled, Matteo," Marcus replied, his tone dripping with venomous betrayal. "Do you really think Don Morosco survived fifty years in this city without having eyes and ears inside the Vescari inner circle?"
Sofia gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as she stared at the man she had trusted like an uncle her entire life.
"You're the mole," Sofia whispered, her voice trembling with shock and betrayal. "You're the one who leaked our location last night."
"Business is business, kid," Marcus sneered, pulling his hand out of his pocket to reveal a heavy tactical pistol fitted with a professional silencer. "Matteo got soft. He got distracted by a baker with a bad attitude and a silver locket, and now the entire syndicate is ready to implode."
Before Marcus could level the barrel of his weapon toward Matteo's chest, I didn't hesitate.
Years of hauling fifty-pound bags of flour, kneading stubborn sourdough, and dealing with aggressive morning customers had given me remarkably fast reflexes.
I snatched a heavy brass paperweight off the nearby command desk and hurled it across the room with every ounce of furious strength I possessed.
The solid brass object caught Marcus squarely across his right wrist with a sickening crack, knocking the silenced pistol spinning out of his grip and across the polished concrete floor.
Marcus cursed in agony, clutching his shattered wrist to his chest.
Before he could lunge forward to recover his weapon, Matteo moved like lightning.
In two massive strides, Matteo closed the distance, grabbed Marcus by the collar of his jacket, and slammed him violently against the reinforced steel door.
"You traitorous bastard," Matteo roared, his fist connecting with Marcus's jaw in a devastating right hook that dropped the head of security instantly to the floor, unconscious and bleeding.
The three guards stationed near the doorway snapped into action immediately, stepping forward to secure the fallen traitor and drag him out of the room.
The heavy command center door slammed shut once more, sealing us inside with the hum of the servers and the glowing digital evidence of a war finally won.
Matteo turned around slowly, breathing heavily, and looked straight at me standing near the desk with my hands still raised from the throw.

"Remind me never to get on your bad side," Matteo said, a faint, breathless laugh escaping his lips as the tension finally broke.
"Just remember to pay me that fifty thousand dollars, Mr. Vescari," I shot back, though my heart was hammering frantically against my ribs.
