Chapter 6 - The Federal Subpoena And The Discovery Of The Secret Offsets

The morning air in downtown Seattle was sharp and crisp, carrying the unmistakable scent of damp cedar and approaching winter rain from the surrounding hills.
I sat at the expansive, minimalist oak desk in my new private practice office overlooking the harbor, reviewing a stack of fresh federal subpoenas that had just been cleared by Judge Lin’s chambers.
My door swung open without a knock, and Marcus Vance stepped in, holding a steaming mug of black coffee and a thick, red-flagged manila folder bearing the seal of the U.S. Attorney’s Financial Crimes Division.
“Morning, boss,” Marcus greeted me, tossing the red folder onto my desk with an audible thud.
“You’re going to want to look at this before your ten o’clock client consultation.”
I looked up from my laptop, my fingers pausing over the keyboard.
“What is it, Marcus? Another hidden asset trail of the Hales?”
“Worse,” Marcus said, pulling up a chair and sitting down across from me with a grim expression.
“Federal investigators working on the preliminary audit of Hale Development discovered a secondary set of corporate books. They weren’t kept in Richard’s office safe or on the primary company servers.”
I reached out, untying the string of the red folder and opening it to reveal a series of printed bank ledgers, offshore shell corporation registries, and certified transaction logs.
“Where were they found?” I asked, narrowing my eyes as my forensic instincts kicked in.
“Encrypted and backed up on an external hard drive hidden inside a false bottom of Camille’s designer handbag collection that was seized during the raid,” Marcus explained.
“It seems the precious daughter wasn't just a spectator to the family fraud; she was the designated logistics coordinator for their illicit offshore movements.”
I scanned the pages, my eyes instantly catching a series of recurring wire transfers routed through a shell entity named Meridian Holdings LLC—an entity registered in the British Virgin Islands.
“Meridian Holdings,” I murmured, tasting the name on my tongue.
“I remember seeing this name referenced in some preliminary bankruptcy filings, but Richard always claimed it was an independent third-party lender.”
“It wasn't independent,” Marcus pointed to a specific line item highlighted in yellow marker.
“Look at the ultimate beneficial owner registry listed on page four. It traces directly back to a private family trust controlled jointly by Richard, Evelyn, and—interestingly enough—Preston’s personal trust account.”
My gaze dropped down the page, and my breath caught in my throat.
Buried deep within the Meridian Holdings asset allocation schedule was an entry dated three days before my wedding day—a transfer of one million five hundred thousand dollars, categorized as an ‘emergency acquisition reserve’ pulled directly from an account linked to my maiden name.
“They didn't just forge my signature on the forty-two-million-dollar loan package,” I whispered, the cold reality hitting me like a physical blow.
“They systematically looted my pre-marital business accounts right before the wedding, using forged power-of-attorney documents filed through a corrupt notary public in Pierce County.”
Marcus nodded solemnly.
“They were hedging their bets, Clara. They knew Hale Development was sinking fast, so they stole liquid capital from your private accounts to fund their emergency offshore cushion, assuming that once you were legally married, spousal asset absorption laws would prevent you from recovering it.”
I closed the folder slowly, my hands steady, though my blood ran cold with a renewed, ice-cold fury.
“They thought they could rob me blind, hide behind corporate veils, and use a wedding ring as a get-out-of-jail-free card,” I said, my voice dropping to a dangerous, measured register.
“They underestimated how thoroughly a federal prosecutor checks the plumbing before moving into a new house.”
“What’s your play?” Marcus asked, a proud, anticipatory grin spreading across his face.
“We don't wait for the federal trial to handle this,” I stood up, buttoning my blazer.
“We file an immediate civil motion for emergency asset freezing and attachment against every single private holding, personal bank account, and hidden trust controlled by Richard, Evelyn, and Camille Hale.”
“And Preston?” Marcus asked.
May you like
“Leave Preston to the federal prosecutors,” I replied coldly, grabbing my briefcase.
“I’m going to personally ensure his family is entirely legally and financially dismantled before the sun sets today.”
