Chapter 8 - The Birth of the Empire

The panic room was small, lined with steel plates, and smelled of ozone and concrete.

I lay on a small cot, my sweat-soaked clothes clinging to my skin, while my mother held one of my hands and Marcus stood by the heavy steel door, his ears pressed against the metal to listen to the chaos outside.

The sound of gunfire was muffled through the reinforced walls, but every explosion and heavy thump vibrated through my bones.

"You have to push, Bianca," my mother said, her voice fierce and steady as she looked between my legs. "The baby's head is already showing. I don't care about the mob, I don't care about the guns outside. You need to bring my granddaughter into this world right now!"

I screamed, a primal, agonized sound that ripped from the back of my throat. I pushed with everything I had left, my fingers digging so hard into my mother's hand that I felt her bones shift.

Outside the door, the sounds of fighting suddenly stopped.

A heavy silence descended over the penthouse.

Marcus leveled his weapon at the door handle, his knuckles white, his breath hitched. We didn't know who had won. We didn't know if Roman was alive, or if Vivienne's assassins were about to burn through the steel lock.

Click.

The heavy electronic lock turned. The massive steel door slowly swung open.

Roman stood in the doorway. His black shirt was torn at the shoulder, his face was smeared with dark soot and blood that wasn't his own, and his gun was held loosely at his side, smoke still curling from the barrel.

He looked into the room, his eyes wild and scanning the space until they landed on me.

At that exact moment, a sharp, thin cry pierced the air of the concrete bunker.

My mother lifted the small, slippery baby into the air, quickly wrapping her in a clean linen towel she had grabbed from the shelf.

"It's a girl," my mother whispered, tears finally rolling down her cheeks. "Roman... look at your daughter."

Roman dropped his gun. The heavy weapon clattered uselessly against the concrete floor as he fell to his knees beside the cot. He didn't care about the blood, the soot, or the danger. He reached out with a trembling hand, his massive, scarred fingers gently touching the tiny, fragile hand of our newborn child.

The baby immediately wrapped her microscopic fingers around his thumb, gripping it with a surprising amount of strength.

Roman let out a ragged, shaking breath, a single tear cutting through the dirt on his cheek.

"Her name is Alicia," Roman whispered, looking up at me with an expression of profound reverence. "After my grandmother. The only true queen this family ever had."

I leaned back against the pillows, completely exhausted but feeling a strange, overwhelming sense of victory.

"Is it over?" I asked quietly, looking toward the dark hallway outside.

Roman looked back at the door, his jaw tightening into a hard, unbreakable line. "The penthouse is clear. Vivienne's loyalists are dead. But my mother escaped down the service elevator. She's running, Bianca. But she has nowhere left to go."
