Chapter 5 - THE ARRAIGNMENT: WHY THE HIGHEST BENCH IN THE DISTRICT BELONGS TO A MOTHER WHO CAME FOR JUSTICE

By 9:00 AM, Courtroom 302 of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia was packed to absolute capacity.

Reporters, federal prosecutors, defense attorneys, and curious spectators crowded the wooden benches, whispering frantically among themselves about the sudden, massive multi-agency raid that had dismantled Dominic Ward’s sprawling syndicate overnight.

I walked through the private side door of the courtroom, wearing my heavy black judicial robe, my posture straight and absolute.

“All rise for the Honorable United States District Judge Victoria Sterling.”

The entire courtroom stood in unison.

I stepped up to the elevated mahogany bench, looked out over the sea of faces, and seated myself in the high-backed leather chair.

“Be seated.”

The double doors at the rear of the courtroom swung open.

Dominic Ward was led in by two federal marshals.

He wasn't wearing his hand-tailored Italian suit anymore. He wore a standard-issue orange federal detention jumpsuit, his wrists shackled, his hair disheveled, looking every bit the common criminal he truly was.

His high-priced defense attorney, Arthur Pendelton—a man whose retainer fees alone could buy a luxury car—leaped to his feet instantly.

“Good morning, Your Honor. Arthur Pendelton representing the defendant, Mr. Dominic Ward. We are moving for an immediate dismissal of all charges due to a flagrant conflict of interest, and requesting immediate release on personal recognizance bail—!”

I raised my right hand, not even needing to touch my gavel.

Mr. Pendelton stopped mid-sentence.

I looked down from the bench, locking my eyes onto Dominic, who stood nervously beside his lawyer.

“Motion for dismissal is summarily denied, Mr. Pendelton,” I said, my voice echoing clearly and authoritatively off the courtroom walls. “Furthermore, regarding the matter of bail.”

I picked up my fountain pen, tapping it gently against the wooden desktop.

“Given the overwhelming evidence of international money laundering, weapons smuggling, witness intimidation, and severe domestic abuse presented by the federal prosecutor’s office... and given the extreme risk of flight and danger to the community and specific protected witnesses—”

I looked directly into Dominic Ward’s terrified, bloodshot eyes.

“Mr. Ward is remanded to the custody of the United States Marshal Service without bond. Trial date is set for November 12th.”

BAM.

The gavel struck the sounding block with a sharp, explosive crack that sealed Dominic Ward’s fate once and for all.

Mr. Pendelton sat down heavily, wiping sweat from his forehead, while Dominic stared up at the bench in absolute, shivering despair.

I didn't smile.

I didn't gloat.
