Chapter 8 - The Ambush in the Vault Corridor

“Move! Get out of the vault now!” Evans roared, grabbing the canvas parcels and the heavy hard drive from the table.

Mason reacted instantly, his hand clamping around Rachel’s forearm as he dragged her across the polished terrazzo floor toward the narrowing gap of the door.

The massive circular steel portal was grinding shut with unstoppable hydraulic force, the locking pins extending like giant teeth.

Rachel threw herself through the three-foot gap, tumbling onto the rough concrete of the outer corridor just as the steel door slammed shut with a concussive boom.

The heavy locking bolts slammed into place with a series of deep, metallic thuds that vibrated through the foundation of the building.

Sterling was trapped inside the vault behind them, his muffled screams dying instantly behind four feet of solid steel and acoustic insulation.

Mason came through the gap right behind Rachel, rolling to his feet with his weapon drawn and his back pressed against the corridor wall.

Evans cleared the opening by mere inches, his satchel catching on the edge of the steel doorframe before he yanked it free.

“The security grid has been overridden by an administrative bypass,” Evans said, checking the tactical readouts on his wrist monitor.

“That wasn't an automated bank alarm.”

“That was a remote police kill-switch initiated from the metropolitan command vehicle outside.”

The sound of heavy tactical boots echoed down the concrete staircase fifty yards ahead of them.

Harsh voices shouted operational codes, followed by the distinctive metallic clatter of automatic submachine guns being cocked.

“Entry team Alpha, move down the primary corridor!” shouted a voice that made Evans’s entire body freeze in place.

“Command authorized lethal force on all three targets! Shoot on sight!”

Evans looked at Mason, his eyes flashing with lethal fury.

“Detective Raymond Miller,” Evans growled beneath his breath.

“My former junior partner on the homicide squad.”

“Vance didn't just promote him after I died; he turned him into his personal executioner.”

Mason leaned out from behind the concrete pillar, his dark eyes assessing the tactical geometry of the corridor.

The hall was sixty yards long, completely devoid of cover except for three recessed utility alcoves housing circuit breaker panels.

Four tactical officers in full black body armor and ballistic helmets were advancing in an overlapping wedge formation.

“We cannot fight our way up that staircase,” Mason said calmly, his breathing steady despite the impending slaughter.

“They have high-ground advantage and body armor.”

“The pneumatic maintenance chute behind the ventilation shaft,” Evans said, pointing toward a heavy iron grate set into the floor.

“It drops directly into the abandoned municipal freight tunnels beneath the subway line.”

“I’ll buy you two minutes to pop the grate.”

“No!” Rachel cried out, grabbing Evans’s sleeve.

“You are not leaving us behind again! You swore you wouldn't die for this!”

Evans looked down at Rachel, his weathered face softening into an expression of fierce, protective pride.

“I faked my death to keep you safe nine years ago, Elena.”

“I’m not dying today; I’m just settling an overdue account with a traitor who wore my department’s shield.”

Before Rachel could argue, Evans stepped out into the center of the corridor with two smoke canisters in his hands.

He pulled the pins with his teeth and hurled them down the hallway toward the advancing tactical unit.

Dense, blinding clouds of grey chemical smoke erupted with a violent hiss, instantly filling the corridor and blinding the approaching shooters.

Automatic gunfire erupted in a deafening crescendo, 9mm hollow-point rounds chewing into the concrete walls and ricocheting off the steel ceiling.

Mason didn't waste a second; he dropped to his knees beside the heavy iron maintenance grate, jamming the tip of his tactical knife beneath the rusted latch.

“Help me with this lever!” Mason shouted over the roar of gunfire.

Rachel threw herself onto her knees beside him, her fingers grabbing the rough iron bars of the grate.

Her muscles screamed in agony as she pulled with every ounce of strength in her body, the sharp metal digging into her palms until blood welled beneath her skin.

With a sickening screech of tearing metal, the rusted hinge broke free, the grate lifting open to reveal a dark, vertical drop into blackness.

Mason looked down into the void, illuminating the drop with a tiny penlight; the bottom was ten feet down, cushioned by sand and gravel from old track repairs.

“Drop through, Elena! Now!” Mason commanded.

Rachel didn't hesitate; she swung her legs over the rim and dropped into the darkness, landing hard on the damp gravel below.

She rolled to absorb the impact, scrambling to her feet just as Mason dropped down beside her like a shadow.

Above them, Evans fired three disciplined rounds into the smoke-filled corridor, the heavy reports of his service weapon echoing like thunder.

A scream of pain indicated that at least one of Vance’s tactical shooters had gone down.

Evans dove toward the open grate, tumbling down into the gravel beside them just as a heavy volley of automatic fire peppered the ceiling opening.

Mason grabbed the fallen iron grate, hoisting it back into position over the opening to block incoming grenades.

“Move west along the rail bed!” Evans ordered, coughing from the smoke inhalation as he staggered to his feet.

“The track leads directly to the abandoned subterranean station beneath Grand Central Square!”

They ran through the pitch-black tunnels, their footsteps splashing through ankle-deep puddles of oily drainage water.

Behind them, the muffled shouts of Miller’s tactical team faded into the cavernous depths of the city’s forgotten underground network.

Rachel clutched the encrypted hard drive against her chest with both arms, her heart pounding with a fierce, burning determination.

She was no longer just running to survive; she was running toward the northern lakes, toward the woman who had sacrificed everything to give her a future.
