Chapter 3 - The Shadow of the Bellini Heir

Before Julia could process the horror of Margaret’s words, a pair of heavy polished leather shoes clicked firmly against the marble floor behind them.

“Margaret?”

The voice was deep, resonant, and carried a dangerous undercurrent that silenced the laughter of nearby guests.

Julia turned around, her heart thumping wildly in her throat.

Standing at the entrance of the grand salon was Mason Bellini.

He was thirty-five years old, towering over six feet tall, with broad, powerful shoulders fitted perfectly into an Italian charcoal-black suit.

His hair was cut short and neat, contrasting with a shadow of rough stubble along a sharp, square jaw.

His dark silk shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, revealing the edge of black ink tattoos that crept up the side of his muscular throat like thorny vines.

There was an aura of cold, lethal calculation about him that commanded immediate obedience from everyone in the mansion.

Mason’s dark brown eyes moved swiftly from Margaret Ellis to Julia, taking in the trembling posture of the old woman and the pale, tear-streaked face of the young maid.

“Is there a problem out here, Margaret?” Mason asked smoothly, walking toward them with slow, measured steps.

“You are usually the most composed woman in this county.

Yet you look as though someone just pulled a weapon on you in my front hall.”

Margaret Ellis straightened her spine, pulling her dignity around herself like a protective armor.

“Mason,” Margaret said, her voice tight and formal.

“We have an urgent situation that cannot wait for after your dinner party.”

Mason stopped two feet away from them, his dark eyes narrowing with immediate suspicion.

He looked down at Julia, whose hands were still shaking violently beneath her white apron.

“Who is she?” Mason asked, his gaze fixed on Julia.

“She is one of the agency girls hired for coat service tonight,” Margaret answered before Julia could speak.

“Her name is Julia.

And she is wearing an item of evidence that was logged into a sealed vault under my personal supervision three years ago.”

Mason’s eyebrow twitched slightly.

He glanced at Julia’s left hand, noticing the silver band and the small blue stone.

“An item of evidence from which case?” Mason inquired, his tone dropping into a lower, far more dangerous register.

Margaret looked directly into Mason’s eyes without flinching.

“The state racketeering and port corruption case that nearly brought down your entire organization three years ago, Mason.

The case built around the testimony of a crown witness named Daniel Foster.”

The silence that followed Margaret’s statement was so thick that the distant clinking of champagne glasses in the dining room sounded like glass shattering on stone.

Mason Bellini went completely still.

Every muscle in his broad frame tightened under his tailored jacket.

His jaw clenched so hard that a vein pulsed along the side of his neck.

“Daniel Foster is dead, Margaret,” Mason said in a voice that was barely above a whisper, yet carried the weight of an execution order.

“He died of an overdose or sudden heart failure in a municipal holding cell before he could testify against my family.

That was the official report signed by the district attorney and confirmed by the chief medical examiner.

Are you telling me the department lied to me?”

“I am telling you,” Margaret said, pointing a shaking finger directly at Julia, “that this young woman claims she has been legally married to Daniel Foster for the past eleven months.

And she is wearing his personal ring—the exact ring that disappeared from our secure property vault the night his death was declared.”

Mason turned his piercing gaze toward Julia.

Julia felt as though she were standing in front of a firing squad.

She was a twenty-four-year-old maid caught between a retired police official and the most feared man in the city’s criminal underworld.

“Is this true?” Mason asked Julia directly, stepping closer until his imposing shadow completely eclipsed her.

“Did you marry a man named Daniel Foster?”

Tears spilled over Julia’s eyelashes, but a fierce, desperate anger rose from within her chest, overcoming her terror.

“Yes!” she cried out, her voice breaking through the polished quiet of the mansion.

“I married him!

He is not a case file to me!

He is my husband!

He cooked breakfast for me, he took care of me when I had the flu, and he held my hand every night before we went to sleep!

He disappeared three weeks ago, and the police at the Fourteenth Precinct treated me like a criminal when I tried to find him!

I don’t know anything about your cases, your ports, or your family!

I only came here to earn enough money to pay my rent so I wouldn't end up on the street while waiting for him to come home!”

Mason stared down at her, studying the raw, unvarnished grief in her wide hazel eyes.

He had spent his entire adult life surrounded by liars, informants, corrupt politicians, and treacherous business partners.

He knew the subtle signs of deception better than any seasoned interrogator.

In Julia’s eyes, he saw no greed, no calculation, and no rehearsed story.

He saw only pure, shattering heartbreak.

Slowly, Mason reached into the breast pocket of his jacket, pulled out an encrypted smartphone, and unlocked the screen.

“Come with me,” Mason said, his voice quiet, steady, and devoid of the cold anger from moments before.

“Both of you.

Upstairs to my private study.”

“Mason, your dinner guests are waiting,” Margaret warned, glancing toward the crowded salon.

Mason didn't even look back at the room full of millionaires and politicians.

“Let them drink my wine until they pass out,” Mason said coldly.

“If someone faked the death of the primary witness against the Bellini empire and allowed him to walk the streets for three years, then my house is not safe.

And neither are you, Margaret.”

Without waiting for a response, Mason turned on his heel and walked toward the grand marble staircase.

Julia looked at Margaret, whose weathered face was pale with dread.

With trembling legs, Julia followed the mafia boss into the shadowed corridors of the upper estate.
