Chapter 1 - Blood on Cold Marble

The grandfather clock in the grand gallery struck two long chimes.

Outside the towering stone walls of the Vale estate, an autumn storm battered the Atlantic coastline.

Roman Vale did not sleep when the weather turned violent.

He walked into the darkened kitchen intending only to pour a glass of bourbon.

Instead, the metallic stench of iron hit the back of his throat.

He stopped just beneath the limestone archway.

Across the massive kitchen, the only illumination came from the under-cabinet lighting.

Claire Bennett stood bent over the porcelain sink.

Her back was turned to him.

The faucet was running at full force.

Her left sleeve was soaked through to the elbow.

She was scrubbing furiously at her forearm with a stiff bristle brush.

Her shoulders trembled with an exhaustion that looked like terror.

"Claire."

The scrub brush clattered violently against the wet porcelain.

She spun on her heels.

Her breath hitched in her throat.

"Mr. Vale."

Roman did not raise his voice.

He stepped across the white marble floor with measured, silent strides.

"Show me your arm."

Claire pulled her sleeve down over her skin.

"I was clumsy, sir."

"That was not a question."

"I dropped a glass while cleaning the crystal cabinets."

"You are not cleaning crystal at two in the morning."

"The glass shattered when it hit the floor."

"Show me."

Claire hesitated for three long seconds.

Her knuckles were white against her apron.

She extended her left arm into the low light.

Roman caught her slender wrist in his hand.

She winced visibly beneath his grip.

His dark eyes narrowed.

The sleeve was pushed back to reveal deep, mottled purple contusions encircling her wrist.

There was no laceration.

There was no broken glass.

He rubbed his thumb against the dark crimson smear drying along her cuff.

"This is human blood."

Claire lowered her eyes to the floor.

"None of it belongs to me."

"Who put their hands on you inside my house?"

"Please, Mr. Vale."

"Give me a name, Claire."

A tear escaped her lashes and tracked down her cheek.

"You need to come down to the sub-level."

He followed her through the heavy iron door beside the wine cellar.

The stone stairs were cold beneath their feet.

At the bottom of the corridor lay the old auxiliary pantry.

The heavy wooden door stood half-open.

Inside, a man clad in black tactical gear lay crumpled beside an overturned steel shelf.

A pool of thick, dark fluid was spreading beneath his collarbone.

Several feet away lay a suppressed subcompact handgun and a combat blade.

Roman knelt beside the motionless figure.

He checked the carotid pulse with two fingers.

The skin was already cooling.

Near the man's gloved hand sat an illuminated military-grade electronic decryption tool.

It was hardwired directly into the estate's primary circuit box.

Roman looked up at the young woman.

"Tell me what happened."

"Chef Daniel asked for fresh herbs before the morning delivery at six."

"At two o'clock?"

"I could not sleep, so I came down early."

Claire pointed toward the severed wires inside the electrical cabinet.

"I heard clicking behind the masonry."

"Go on."

"I thought an electrician had been called for the generator lines."

Claire pulled her sweater tight around her chest.

"When I opened the latch, he had that device plugged into your internal feeds."

"Did he speak to you?"

"He laughed at me."

Roman waited, his pulse slowing into ice.

"He told me I was just the maid."

"What were his exact words?"

"He said, 'Walk away and you will live until sunrise.'"

Roman's jaw set like iron.

"You did not walk away."

"I tried to back out of the doorway."

Claire touched the dark bruises on her arm.

"He lunged before I could reach the stairs."

"He had a knife."

"He held the blade against my throat."

Roman glanced toward the steel shelving unit.

"How did he end up on the floor?"

"I struck his forearm with a heavy stoneware jar of rosemary."

"And then?"

"The knife fell."

"He was twice your size, Claire."

"I shoved him with everything I had."

She pointed at the jagged angle of the steel support bracket.

"The shelving buckled under his weight."

"He struck his neck on the corner."

"I checked his breathing before I ran upstairs."

Claire's voice broke into a jagged whisper.

"He was dead."

Roman rose to his full height.

"That was self-defense."

"A man died by my hands."

"He came into my home armed to kill."

She stared at the concrete floor.

"Did he say anything else before he died?"

Claire froze completely.

The silence stretched between them for five agonizing seconds.

Roman's voice lowered to a razor-thin whisper.

"Claire."

"He gave a name."

"Whose name?"

She looked up at him with genuine fear.

"I don't think you want to hear it."

"Whose name did he speak?"

Claire swallowed hard.

"Julian Vale."

The air seemed to leave Roman's lungs.

Neither of them breathed.

Julian was supposed to have perished three years ago in an offshore explosion in Monaco.

Roman had identified the wreckage himself.

"Who is Julian?" Claire asked quietly.

Roman kept his eyes pinned to the dead mercenary.

"My brother."

Claire went entirely pale.

"The brother who died in the Mediterranean?"

"The brother who was declared dead."

Roman reached into his tailored pocket and withdrew his phone.

Claire reached out and caught his wrist.

"Wait."

Roman stared down at her fingers on his skin.

"There was one more thing he said."

"Speak."

"He told me to tell Julian that the east gate was already open."

Roman looked upward toward the vaulted stone ceiling.

The East Gate was the private entrance to the residential wing.

Only six individuals possessed the biometric cipher to bypass that perimeter.

Roman dialed his head of security.

"Marcus."

A voice answered after two rings.

"Yes, Mr. Vale?"

"Initiate a total lockdown."

"Sir?"

"Seal every perimeter gate immediately."

"Has there been a breach?"

"Drop the exterior shutters on all wings."

Roman looked directly into Claire's wide eyes.

"And Marcus."

"Sir?"

"Do not inform anyone in the household why."

Roman terminated the call.

Claire stepped back toward the doorway.

"Are we trapped here with someone?"

Roman knelt and picked up the intruder's weapon using a clean cloth.

"No."

"You just locked this estate from the inside."

"You misunderstand our situation, Claire."

His face was completely devoid of emotion.

"We are not trapped in here with an enemy."

May you like

He racked the slide of the pistol with a sharp metallic snap.

"They are locked in here with me."
