Chapter 10 - The Live Reveal

At seven-fifteen on Saturday morning, the red recording tally light above Studio B flared to life.
I sat on the dark blue broadcast sofa opposite David Chen, wearing a clean charcoal blazer Monica had lent me from the wardrobe room.
No amount of studio makeup could conceal the dark, raised swelling that ran from my left cheekbone down to my jawline.
Across the city of Columbus, television screens in kitchens, diners, police substations, and private executive suites flipped from national morning cartoons to the stark, bold graphic of a special investigative bulletin:
BREAKING INVESTIGATION: THE GHOST OF VALE COMMERCIAL HOLDINGS.
“Good morning, I’m David Chen,” the anchor began, his voice resonant and commanding.
“For twelve years, the commercial landscape of downtown Columbus has been shaped by Vale Commercial Properties, managed by prominent civic developers Claudia Walsh and her stepson, Derek Walsh.
Twelve years ago, the public was told that Eleanor Vale Walsh, the sole heiress to the Vale industrial manufacturing fortune, passed away following a catastrophic illness.
This morning, WSYX News has confirmed that Eleanor Vale is alive, residing under twenty-four-hour police protection at a residential care facility in Delaware County—and that her corporate death was entirely manufactured to execute an illegal multi-million-dollar real estate takeover.”
The screen behind Chen cut to a split display.
On the left was the official 2014 death certificate filed with the Franklin County records office.
On the right was a live, high-definition remote video feed from Room 214 of Maple Glen.
Eleanor Vale sat upright in her bed, draped in a dark navy shawl, flanked by two uniformed Delaware County sheriff’s deputies and Marcus, the night nurse who had refused to open the doors to Claudia.
Her gray eyes were steady, clear, and projected across every television screen in central Ohio with terrifying dignity.
“Mrs.
Vale, can you hear us?” Chen asked through the audio link.
“I can hear you perfectly well, Mr.
Chen,” Eleanor answered, her voice clear, resonant, and completely devoid of confusion.
“For twelve years, I have been held in administrative isolation by Claudia Vance Walsh and my son, Derek Walsh, while they forged my name on corporate deeds to liquidate my family’s century-old estate.
I am completely sane, I am fully aware of my surroundings, and I have never executed a transfer of my voting stock to Vale Commercial Holdings.”
The broadcast then cut directly to me.
The studio camera zoomed in until my face filled the frame, the purple contusion beneath my eye stark against the pale studio lighting.
“Joining us in the studio is Emily Walsh, head librarian at Maple Ridge Elementary and wife of Derek Walsh,” Chen said.
“Mrs.
Walsh, twelve hours ago, you were assaulted at a public school fundraiser in front of dozens of witnesses.
Tell the community what happened.”
I looked straight into the black lens of the center camera, picturing Derek sitting in his luxury sports car, picturing Claudia preparing her speech for the Riverfront Vista groundbreaking.
“My husband struck me last night because our ten-year-old daughter, Sadie, found an envelope that was never meant to reach him,” I said, my voice steady, deliberate, and calm.
“He struck me to destroy the evidence that his mother was alive.
He threw that envelope into a school pond because he knew that if I read Eleanor’s name, the ten-year lie he used to build our home, our finances, and our marriage would collapse in an instant.”
I held up the plastic sleeve containing Arthur Vale’s 1995 living trust, holding it directly before the camera lens.
“At four o'clock this morning, inside the historic walk-in vault at the Vale Lighting complex on Front Street, I recovered the original, un-forged corporate ledgers of Vale Manufacturing.
They prove that every dollar Derek Walsh spent, every loan Claudia Walsh secured, and every eviction notice they served across this city was an act of criminal fraud against Eleanor Vale.”
Down the hallway outside the studio, a production assistant was waving his hands frantically through the soundproof glass.
Monica Vega leaned into the producer’s ear, then spoke through Chen’s earpiece.
Chen turned back toward the main camera with a sharp, professional intensity.
“We are receiving reports that the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office, in coordination with the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Delaware County Sheriff, has just executed emergency search warrants at the corporate headquarters of Vale Commercial Holdings in Upper Arlington,” Chen announced.
“Arrest warrants have been formally issued for Claudia Vance Walsh and Derek Walsh on felony charges of kidnapping, grand larceny, corporate forgery, and interstate wire fraud.”
The studio monitors switched to a live drone feed hovering over the Riverfront Vista development site on the Scioto River.
A ceremonial stage draped in red, white, and blue bunting was surrounded by half-empty folding chairs.
Three Columbus police cruisers and two unmarked state patrol sedans had already blocked the access road.
Derek Walsh was visible on the screen, standing beside a microphone podium, his hands raised in furious protest as two state troopers pinned his arms behind his back and clicked a heavy pair of stainless-steel handcuffs around his wrists.
Fifty feet away, Claudia Walsh was being escorted into the back of an unmarked black cruiser, her tailored wool coat pulled up over her face to shield her features from the media cameras already gathering at the fence.
I sat back against the studio sofa, letting out a long, shuddering breath.
Through the glass window of the control booth, Beth was watching the monitors, crying tears of sheer relief as she held her phone to her ear.

Sadie’s face was on the small screen of Beth’s phone, safe in Karen’s kitchen, watching her mother on live television.
The lie that had begun twelve years ago in a forged cemetery plot had finally reached the light of day.
