Chapter 13 - The Poison Ledger

Marcus walked over to the built-in media console on the far wall of the library and tapped the screen of his phone against the receiver.
The sixty-inch display flickered to life, showing the live broadcast of the evening edition of CBS Evening News.
A breathless anchorwoman was standing in front of the United States Department of the Treasury building in Washington, D.C.
"We are breaking into regular programming with massive developments in the ongoing Mercer-Vance federal racketeering investigation," the anchor announced.
"Less than one hour ago, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, in conjunction with the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority, announced the total asset freeze of Vance Offshore Holdings."
Charles Vance leaned forward, his cashmere-clad arms going rigid as the color began to drain from his withered face.
"What is this?" Charles whispered, his gravelly voice cracking.
"What did you do?"
"We didn't just seize the medical files at Saint Jude’s Sanitarium, Charles," Marcus said, walking back to stand beside Caroline.
"Doctor Sterling kept two sets of books."
"The first set recorded the payments Douglas Mercer made to keep Caroline paralyzed in room 14."
"The second set recorded the kickbacks Doctor Sterling paid to your private offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands for forty-two separate patients over the last fifteen years."
The television screen shifted to show internal corporate balance sheets displaying the Vance family crest alongside the names of prominent California figures who had mysteriously disappeared from public life.
"Saint Jude's wasn't Douglas's clinic, Father," Marcus continued, his eyes cold with absolute judgment.
"It was yours."
"You built that private asylum twenty years ago to dispose of business partners, inconvenient family members, and corrupt politicians who threatened to turn state's evidence against your land acquisitions."
"Douglas Mercer didn't come up with the idea to kidnap Caroline; he was drowning in gambling debt to your private loan sharks in Las Vegas."
"You offered to cancel his twelve-million-dollar debt if he delivered the Point Dume coastal parcels into your development portfolio."
"You gave him the sedative, you arranged for Elena Rostova to be brought to the house, and you sent Doctor Sterling's medical van to wait at the bottom of the cliff road before the match was even struck."
Charles Vance stared at the television screen, his breathing becoming shallow and ragged as the tickers at the bottom of the broadcast began listing the criminal indictments.
VANCE ENTERPRISES INDICTED UNDER RICO STATUTES.
FEDERAL ARREST WARRANTS ISSUED FOR CHARLES VANCE AND SENIOR BOARD MEMBERS.
TRADING HALTED ON NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE FOR VANCE HOLDINGS.
The old man’s hands began to shake violently, the crystal glass slipping from his fingers and shattering onto the Persian rug, the single malt scotch soaking into the wool.
"You destroyed your own family, Marcus," Charles choked out, looking at his eldest son with sheer, unadulterated venom.
"You destroyed the fortune I spent fifty years building for you!"
"You didn't build a fortune, Father," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a register of quiet, terrible finality.
"You built a slaughterhouse with marble floors."
"And tonight, the doors are locked from the outside."
The front gates of the estate groaned open down the long driveway, followed immediately by the screaming wail of multiple emergency sirens.
Red and blue strobe lights began reflecting through the high leaded-glass windows of the library, cutting through the shadows of the walnut shelves.
Heavy footsteps echoed across the marble foyer outside the library doors, followed by the definitive, sharp click of tactical weapons being readied.
The double doors burst open, revealing a team of eight federal agents in tactical armor, led by the Assistant Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Los Angeles Field Office.
The agents moved with practiced, lethal efficiency, fanning out across the library with drawn firearms.
"Charles Vance," the lead agent announced, stepping up to the oak desk with a printed federal warrant.
"You are under arrest for racketeering, conspiracy to commit murder, federal kidnapping, and thirty-six counts of money laundering."
Charles did not move; he sat frozen in his leather chair, watching as the federal agents snapped heavy iron handcuffs around his frail, trembling wrists.
As they pulled the old titan up from his chair, his cashmere sweater snagging against the edge of the carved desk, he looked at Caroline Mercer one last time.
"You think this is over, you wretched girl?" Charles spat, his voice trembling with the pathetic rage of a dethroned tyrant.
"The courts will tie this up for twenty years! My lawyers will bury you under paper until you die of old age!"
Caroline walked up to the old man, her single good eye luminous and completely devoid of fear.
She reached out, straightened the crooked collar of his white shirt with her scarred fingers, and spoke with the quiet authority of an empress standing over ruins.
"Your lawyers won't be filing motions for you, Charles," Caroline whispered.
"Your lawyers are already at the federal courthouse, offering depositions to save their own licenses."
"You died tonight in this room, old man."
"The only thing left is for the earth to swallow what you stole."
The agents dragged Charles Vance out of the library, his expensive Italian leather slippers dragging across his own Persian rugs, his curses echoing down the long hall until the heavy front door slammed shut behind him.
May you like
Caroline and Marcus stood alone in the quiet library, surrounded by the ticking of an antique grandfather clock and the distant wail of sirens fading down the San Marino boulevard.
The wolf had been trapped in his own lair, and the reckoning was now coming for the last two souls who had lit the fire on Point Dume.
