Chapter 15 - The Sunrise Over Pier 14 and the End of the Longest Night in Baltimore

The sun rose over the Baltimore Inner Harbor on a crisp, clear Friday morning, painting the sky in brilliant shades of violet, rose, and gold.
Down on Pier 14, the old rusted corrugated metal warehouses stood silent and empty, their dark past washed away by federal warrants, court orders, and the quiet, irreversible march of justice.
The heavy sliding doors were chained and padlocked, the yellow police tape fluttering gently in the morning breeze coming off the Chesapeake Bay.
Inside the brownstone on Society Hill, the house was entirely quiet.
In the small kitchen on the ground floor, sunlight streamed through the clean glass windows, illuminating a copper kettle resting on the stove, a loaf of artisanal sourdough bread on a wooden board, and two white ceramic mugs sitting side by side on the counter.
Emma Calloway walked down the stairs, wearing a soft grey cashmere sweater and comfortable jeans, her bare feet padding softly against the hardwood steps.
She walked over to the kitchen window, pushing it open just an inch to let the crisp, clean scent of the morning air drift inside.
No sirens.
No footsteps echoing in the dark.
No fear of a shadow waiting in the alley.
Just the quiet, steady hum of a city waking up to a new day.
Behind her, the heavy oak floorboards creaked as Vincent walked into the kitchen, his dark hair slightly rumpled from sleep, wearing a simple black t-shirt and dark trousers.
He didn't say a word.
He walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her gently back against his chest, resting his chin softly on her shoulder as they both looked out the window toward the harbor.
"Morning," he whispered against her ear.
"Morning," Emma replied, leaning back into his embrace, her fingers resting over his hands.
Down on the water, a massive cargo ship sounded its deep, resonant foghorn, signaling the arrival of a new freighter carrying clean goods, honest paperwork, and a future built on truth.
May you like
Emma closed her eyes, took a deep breath of the morning air, and smiled.
The night was finally over.
