Chapter 7 - The Downward Spiral

Just as a fragile peace settled between Elena and Mateo, the alarms inside Camila's room shattered the silence of the ICU. Red lights flashed aggressively, and a robotic voice began announcing a critical drop in oxygen saturation. Dr. Sterling and a team of crash-cart nurses rushed into the room, pushing Elena and Mateo out into the hallway. Through the glass, they watched in horror as their daughter’s body began to seize violently. The brain swelling had reached a critical tipping point, triggering severe neurological storms.

"She’s crashing! Prepare twenty milligrams of mannitol and load another dose of anti-seizure medication!" Dr. Sterling’s voice was commanding, but her eyes revealed the immense stakes of the situation. Camila’s heart rate skyrocketed to dangerous levels, her tiny frame convulsing against the restraints of the medical equipment. The monitors painted a terrifying picture of a body pushed to its absolute limits, on the verge of total system failure.

Outside, Elena sank to her knees, clutching her rosary, her lips moving in silent, desperate prayer. Mateo stood against the wall, paralyzed, watching the doctors perform chest compressions as Camila's heart momentarily stopped. The scene mirrored the nightmare they had lived through at the funeral home, but this time, there would be no second miraculous awakening if she slipped away. The medical team worked with frantic precision, fighting against time to stabilize her volatile brain chemistry.

For twenty agonizing minutes, the line between life and death became razor-thin. The nurses administered medication after medication, trying to break the cycle of seizures that was starving her brain of oxygen. Every second felt like an eternity to the watching parents. Finally, after what felt like a lifetime in purgatory, the violent convulsions began to subside. The erratic lines on the heart monitor smoothed out into a rapid but stable rhythm. Camila was alive, but she was now in a medically induced coma to protect her brain from further damage.
