Chapter 7 - The Ghost in the Records

Helen pulled a heavy manila folder from inside her coat and dropped it onto the desk.

The paper was water-damaged around the edges, held together by rusted metal staples.

On the front cover, faded red stamp ink read: INTERNAL AFFAIRS DIVISION — CLASSIFIED OPERATION NIGHTFALL (1999).

"I didn't bring this here to show Arthur," Helen admitted, looking directly at Hannah.

"I brought this because I took it from the department archive three hours before they tried to burn the warehouse down in 2005."

Cole stepped closer to the desk, his sharp eyes scanning the police seal.

"Operation Nightfall," Cole murmured.

"That was the joint task force between the precinct commanders and the waterfront strike teams."

"It was supposed to be an investigation into dockside racketeering," Helen explained, flipping open the cover.

"In reality, it was a covert pipeline set up to transfer mafia money into police retirement funds."

Hannah looked down at the yellowing pages covered in carbon copies of police rosters.

Her eyes fell upon an official personnel photograph stapled to the upper corner.

A young man in a crisp patrol officer's uniform smiled faintly at the camera.

He had dark hair cropped close to his scalp, high cheekbones, and sharp, intense hazel eyes.

Beneath the photo, the name read: Officer Thomas Reed, Badge #4412.

Hannah reached out, her finger hovering over the image of the man who gave her life.

"He looks so young," Hannah whispered, a knot tightening in her throat.

"He was twenty-six when that picture was taken," Helen said softly.

"Two weeks before he was killed."

Cole stood beside Hannah, looking down at the same photograph.

Suddenly, Cole’s brow furrowed.

He stared at Thomas Reed's jawline, the distinct curve of the brow, and the sharp bridge of the nose.

Hannah looked up at Cole, and a strange, chilling sensation crawled up the back of her neck.

The resemblance between the man in the faded black-and-white photo and the man standing beside her was unmistakable.

It was not subtle.

It was biological.

"Cole..." Hannah breathed, her voice barely a whisper.

Cole took half a step backward, his face draining of color.

"No," Cole muttered, shaking his head.

"That's impossible."

Helen turned the page to an official hospital intake ledger from St. Jude’s Memorial, dated October 14, 1999.

"Look at the delivery records from Ward C," Helen instructed.

Hannah leaned over the desk, her eyes scanning the handwritten notes of the attending obstetrician.

There were two births recorded within forty minutes of each other in the private wing.

Entry 1: Infant Female. Mother: Margaret Reed (Deceased during delivery).

Entry 2: Infant Male. Mother: Victoria Kane (Deceased during delivery).

Hannah gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.

"Victoria Kane?" Hannah asked, looking at Helen.

"Anthony Kane's only daughter," Helen revealed, her voice dropping into a solemn hush.

"Anthony Kane had a daughter, not a son."

"Her name was Victoria."

"She was hidden away in Europe for most of her youth because Anthony knew the syndicate would target her."

"She returned to the city in secret in the winter of 1998."

"And she fell in love with the undercover detective assigned to watch her family."

Cole’s hands gripped the edge of the mahogany desk so hard that the wood groaned under his fingers.

"Thomas Reed," Cole choked out.

"Thomas Reed was the father of Victoria Kane’s child," Helen said, looking directly at Cole.

"Anthony Kane found out two weeks before the babies were born."

"He didn't order Thomas killed out of anger; he made a pact with him."

"Because Victor Kane had already formed an alliance with the dirty precinct captains to wipe out Victoria's line and seize the docks."

Hannah looked at the ledger, then at the letter, the puzzle pieces clicking together with terrifying clarity.

"The swap," Hannah whispered, the realization hitting her like a physical blow.

"It wasn't an orphan taken in from the streets."

"Thomas Reed swapped the infants."

Helen nodded slowly, a deep sadness in her eyes.

"Victoria Kane gave birth to a daughter."

"Margaret Reed—Thomas’s first wife, who died in the safehouse—had given birth to a son."

"Thomas knew Victor Kane’s hitmen were waiting outside the hospital to murder the Kane heir."

"So Thomas took Anthony Kane's newborn daughter—you, Hannah—and handed you to his sister Sarah."

"He told Sarah to raise you as an ordinary working-class girl, far away from the blood and greed of the docks."

Hannah turned slowly to Cole, whose chest was heaving with silent, ragged breaths.

"And Cole?" Hannah asked, her voice trembling.

"Thomas took his own biological son," Helen said, her gaze fixing onto Cole.

"He gave his own flesh and blood to Anthony Kane to be raised under the Kane surname."

"He gave his son a crown that painted a target on his back."

"And he took three bullets at the North Pier that night to make sure Victor’s men believed the true heir was dead."

Cole collapsed into the heavy armchair, his head in his hands.

The silence inside the room was heavy enough to crush bone.

Cole Kane was not a mobster's grandson.

He was the biological son of Thomas Reed, the honest patrolman who died in the rain.

And Hannah Reed was the sole surviving granddaughter of Anthony Kane, the legendary mafia kingpin.

"He sacrificed me," Cole whispered into the empty air, his voice cracked and hollow.

"My own father gave me to the wolves to save a mob boss’s baby."

"He didn't sacrifice you, Cole," Helen said firmly.

"He gave you the empire."

"And he gave Hannah the only thing Anthony Kane’s money could never buy."

"What?" Hannah asked, tears streaming freely down her face.

May you like

"He gave you a normal life," Helen answered.

"Until tonight."
