Chapter 3 - The Ghost on the Recording

The air in the secure office felt dense, suffocating, and charged with static electricity.
Maya carried a ruggedized, air-gapped laptop from a locked steel safe and placed it beside the stainless-steel table.
She inserted the encrypted black drive into the side port, entering an eight-digit alphanumeric key from memory.
The screen flickered once, then resolved into a private media player displaying a single video file dated six days before Claire’s death.
"Watch this before we touch anything else," Maya whispered, stepping back toward the vault doorway.
I sat on the edge of the steel stool, my eyes fixed entirely on the dark glass of the monitor.
The video began with a soft hiss of audio static.
The camera was angled from a low dresser, capturing the cramped, modest interior of Claire’s staff bedroom on the basement level of my estate.
Claire sat on the edge of her single mattress, dressed in her faded blue housekeeper's tunic.
Her skin was pale, almost translucent under the cheap fluorescent lighting of the basement quarters.
Dark purple bruises hung beneath her hollowed eyes, and her breath rattled unevenly in her chest.
Yet her gaze was direct, piercing, and terrifyingly lucid.
"If you are watching this, Adrian, it means my heart finally gave out," she began, her voice a fragile rasp that made my ribs ache.
"Or rather, it means the poison Marcus Sterling slipped into my blood finally reached lethal concentration."
I rose half an inch off the stool, my hands curling into tight fists.
"Marcus Sterling," I breathed, the rage threatening to rip through my vocal cords.
"Listen to her," Maya ordered from behind me, her voice sharp and steady.
"I don't have much time left," Claire continued on the recording, pressing a trembling palm against her sternum.
"The tremors started three weeks ago in my hands, and the doctor claims it is an iron deficiency."
"He smiled while handing me the white capsules every Friday morning after my shift."
"I took one to an independent toxicology lab in Brooklyn last Tuesday while Lily was asleep."
"Thallium."
"Colorless, odorless, impossible to detect without specialized mass spectrometry."
"They are dissolving my nervous system from the inside out so my death looks like natural cardiac arrest."
She paused, coughing violently into a crumpled cotton handkerchief, her shoulders shaking with agonizing spasms.
When she looked back up, a faint, bitter smile touched her pale lips.
"Vincent discovered that I wasn't an uneducated girl from upstate New York."
"He recognized the way I handled the vintage silverware in the dining room during your anniversary dinner with Vanessa."
"He ran my prints through his private database and found Julian Vance's daughter."
"He realized that the child living in the basement was not Thomas Bennett's orphan."
"Thomas died protecting us in Sussex, Adrian."
"He took two bullets to the spine in an alley behind the clinic so I could get Lily onto the cargo ferry to Dublin."
"I gave Lily his surname because Thomas was the only man who died to keep your bloodline alive."
Tears spilled silently over Claire’s scarred cheeks on the screen, reflecting the harsh light.
"I couldn't tell you, Adrian."
"You were a prisoner in your own empire."
"Vanessa’s family controls your maritime shipping licenses through the port authority."
"Vincent controls every bodyguard, every driver, and every camera angle around your life."
"If I walked into your study and claimed that Lily was your daughter, you would have ordered a DNA test through Sterling's lab."
"And Sterling would have swapped the vials, confirmed I was delusional, and Vincent would have made us disappear into the Atlantic."
"I had to wait until Maya secured the original Swiss genetic baselines."
"I had to wait until the legal net was tight enough that even the Moretti name couldn't bury the truth."
Claire leaned closer to the lens, her gaze burning through the glass, speaking directly into my soul.
"Lily has your eyes, Adrian."
"She has your stubbornness, your silence, and your habit of counting steps when she walks down a dark corridor."
"She doesn't know what money is."
"She doesn't know what power is."
"She only knows that the tall, quiet man on the third floor is someone Mommy prayed for every night."
"Protect her."
"Not with your guns, because guns will only give Vincent an excuse to call the police and take her into state custody."
"Protect her with the law."
"Claim her publicly before Vanessa can announce your marriage contract."
"If you do that, the Romano family cannot touch her without voiding the entire corporate merger."
Claire reached forward, her trembling fingers covering the lens for a brief moment before the screen abruptly cut to black.
The silence that filled the vault was absolute, broken only by the low hum of the laptop fan.
I sat frozen, the image of Claire’s dying face etched permanently into my retinas.
Every instinct in my body screamed for violence.
I wanted to tear my townhouse apart with my bare hands.
I wanted to drag Marcus Sterling out of his clinic and make him swallow the same poison he had fed to the mother of my child.
I wanted to put a bullet through Vincent’s skull in front of the entire family council.
"Adrian," Maya’s voice cut through the crimson fog of my fury.
"Control yourself."
"You heard what she said."
"If you go to that house with a gun, Vincent’s men will shoot you under the pretense of self-defense, and Vanessa will become the legal guardian of the estate."
"And Lily will be sent to an offshore facility where she will never be seen again."
Before I could answer, the burner phone in my coat pocket buzzed violently against my ribs.
I pulled it out and looked at the illuminated screen.
The caller ID showed an unlisted number from the private exchange of the Romano penthouse.
Vanessa.
I motioned for Maya to stay silent, swiped the screen, and placed the device to my ear.
"Yes?" I answered, keeping my voice perfectly flat, devoid of emotion.
"Adrian, where on earth are you?" Vanessa’s sharp, melodious voice echoed through the speaker.
"I arrived at the estate twenty minutes ago to help coordinate the staff schedules, and the garage supervisor said your private sedan is missing."
"I had business to handle regarding the estate’s maritime filings," I lied smoothly.
"Well, you left the house in absolute disarray," she sighed, her tone dripping with irritated condescension.
"The housekeeper's quarters in the basement are disgusting."
"And that little brat she left behind was nowhere to be found."
My heart slammed against my ribs, but I did not let my breath hitch.
"Lily was resting when I stepped out," I said carefully.
"Well, she isn't in her room now," Vanessa replied, the rustle of papers audible in the background.
"Not that it matters."
"I already called Catholic Charities and arranged for an expedited transport to pick her up this afternoon."
"We cannot have a dead servant's child wandering around the property with our wedding reception sixty days away."
"It looks utterly ridiculous, Adrian."
"Cancel the transport, Vanessa," I ordered, my voice dangerously calm.
A brief pause hovered over the line, followed by a light, artificial laugh.
"Excuse me?"
"I said cancel the transport," I repeated, each word landing like an iron hammer.
"I will handle Claire Bennett’s affairs personally."
"Don't touch a single item in that basement room until I return."
"Adrian, you are being absurdly sentimental about a maid," Vanessa snapped, her patience fraying.
"Vincent agrees with me."
"He said the child needs to be processed through the proper state foster network immediately."
"Vincent works for me, not the Romano family," I stated coldly.
"I will be back at the estate by noon."
"Ensure the basement door remains locked until I arrive."
I hung up before she could respond, throwing the burner phone onto the table.
Maya watched me with narrowed eyes, her arms crossed over her chest.
"They are already searching the room for the key," Maya noted grimly.
"They know Claire had evidence, but they don't know she managed to pass it to Lily."
"We run the DNA test right now," I said, turning toward the cryogenic canister.
"I want the legal certificate printed, notarized, and registered with the state court before I set foot back in that house."
"The lab courier is waiting on the concourse level," Maya replied, opening a refrigerated transport pouch.
"Give me your cheek swab, Adrian."
May you like
"Within two hours, you won't just be the head of the Moretti family."
"You will be the legal father of the primary heir to everything Vincent and Vanessa want to steal."
