Chapter 3 - The Secrets of the Sterling Estate

The days following the incident were marked by a tense, fragile peace. Sarah became hyper-vigilant, shadowing Leo’s every move, refusing to leave him alone with his grandmother. But the mansion itself seemed to conspire against her. It was a place where walls seemed to have ears, and every shadow held a memory of a harsh correction. Sarah began to look closer, to investigate the history of the Sterling family, digging through files in the study that Eleanor had long kept locked.

She found them late one night—old medical records, correspondence from boarding schools, and legal documents that painted a disturbing picture. It wasn't just Leo; her husband, David, had been subjected to the same cold, calculated emotional abuse as a child. The letters from his school, dating back twenty years, spoke of a boy who was perpetually anxious, who struggled with intense isolation, and who was constantly punished for "failure to reach his potential." The realization hit Sarah like a physical blow: David hadn't grown up in a loving home; he had survived a military-grade indoctrination.

She confronted David in the kitchen, her voice barely a whisper, clutching the brittle papers to her chest. "Did you know? Did you know she did this to you, too? Look at these letters, David! She destroyed your childhood, and now she’s trying to do the same to our son!"

David, a man who usually projected strength and confidence, seemed to shrink before her. He looked at the papers, his face pale, his eyes darting toward the hallway, as if expecting his mother to appear. "Sarah, please. Put those away. It doesn't matter now. She's… she's the reason we have everything we have. It was hard, yes, but it made me who I am."

"It made you a man who is afraid of his own mother!" Sarah cried, her heart breaking. "You’re not protecting him, David. You’re letting her finish the job she started on you. We have to leave. We have to take Leo and just go."

David stood silent, his shoulders slumped. He looked at Sarah with a mixture of fear and longing, a man who desperately wanted to believe her but was paralyzed by the psychological chains that had been forged in his youth. The house seemed to grow colder, the silence heavier. Sarah realized she was alone in this battle. She couldn't rely on her husband to stand up to the woman who owned them, both financially and emotionally. She would have to find another way, a way that didn't depend on the approval of a monster. She started secretly researching lawyers, looking for ways to secure her own financial independence and, more importantly, a way to ensure Leo’s safety, even if it meant destroying the very name that had sustained them.
