Chapter 15 - Dawn Over the Lake

The sun rose over Lake Michigan with a clear, uncompromising brilliance, painting the winter skyline of Chicago in shades of gold, amber, and ice-blue.

The snow on the streets below had begun to melt, turning into slush as city plows cleared the final remnants of the storm that had changed our lives forever.

I stood by the front entrance of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital, holding one infant carrier in each hand, while Clara walked beside me, leaning her weight lightly on my arm.

Malcolm was waiting by the passenger door of the vintage 1972 Jaguar, holding the rear door open with a respectful nod.

“Everything is settled with the discharge nurse, Mr. Mercer,” Malcolm reported as we approached the car. “And the federal prosecutor’s office confirmed that Arthur Sterling’s offshore trusts have been formally frozen under state anti-corruption statutes. Sterling himself has already boarded a private flight back to Zurich.”

“Let him stay there,” I said, settling the infant carriers securely onto the plush leather back seat of the car.

Clara climbed into the passenger seat, turning back to check on the twins before looking up at me through the open door, a radiant, untroubled smile on her face.

“Are you ready to go home, Ethan?” she asked.

I looked back at the towering limestone facade of the hospital, then out across the wide, open expanse of the frozen lake where the morning light was breaking through the clouds.

The name Mercer would no longer be feared, hated, or whispered about in the corrupt boardrooms of the Gold Coast.

It was clean now.

And it belonged to us.

“Yes,” I said, sliding into the driver’s seat and closing the door behind me. “Let’s go home.”

Malcolm took his place behind the wheel, the powerful twelve-cylinder engine roaring to life with a deep, steady hum that vibrated through the chassis.

We pulled away from the curb, merging into the morning traffic as the city woke up around us, leaving the shadows of the past buried deep in the snow.
