Chapter 8 - The Collapse of the Conspirators

Julian Sterling stared down at the digital forensics report in his hands, his knuckles turning white as he realized every alibi he had prepared had just been systematically dismantled. The board members on either side of the long mahogany table shifted uncomfortably in their leather chairs, casting wary glances away from the general counsel as the full implication of his forgery settled over the room.
—This... this is an unauthorized intrusion into private legal communications, Sterling sputtered, his polished professional veneer completely dissolving into ragged desperation as he stood up so fast his chair screeched against the floor. You have no legal standing to present this without a court order!
—I have every legal standing necessary as the primary surviving heir and returning CEO of Hawthorne Defense Components, Ethan replied, his voice echoing with absolute authority through the vaulted room. And as my first official act this morning, I am revoking your corporate counsel status effective immediately.
—You can't do that without a full board vote! Sterling shouted, slamming both hands down on the mahogany table as panic took complete control of his faculties. The majority of these directors are committed to the Apex Global merger!
—A merger your co-conspirator negotiated by illegally selling classified proprietary defense tech to offshore entities under federal trade embargoes, Arthur Vance interjected calmly from the doorway, stepping forward to drop a second thick file onto the table right in front of the lead board member.
The lead director, an elderly man named Henderson who had served on the board since Ethan’s grandfather’s era, opened the file with trembling fingers. He scanned the first page, his face darkening with absolute horror as he looked up at Sterling.
—Is this true, Julian? Henderson demanded, his voice trembling with age and suppressed rage. Did Margaret authorize an unauthorized tech transfer to offshore shell companies?
Sterling opened his mouth to formulate a denial, but no words came out; the digital tracking numbers, wire transfer receipts, and shipping manifests laid out in the compliance file were entirely irrefutable. He slumped back down into his leather chair, defeated, his head dropping into his hands as the reality of a federal indictment crashed down upon him.
—Security, Henderson said quietly into the desktop intercom, his eyes never leaving Sterling. Escort Mr. Sterling off the premises immediately and lock down all electronic access terminals associated with his office.
Two burly corporate security guards in black suits stepped silently into the boardroom from the side hallway, grabbing Sterling roughly by the arms and hauling him out of his chair before he could utter another protest. The heavy oak doors swung shut behind them with a muffled click, leaving a heavy, stunned silence hanging in the air of the boardroom.
Ethan turned his attention slowly back to the remaining board members, who were sitting paralyzed in their seats, waiting for the axe to fall on the rest of the leadership team.
—The emergency vote on the Apex Global merger is permanently canceled, Ethan announced, his amber-flecked eyes sweeping across the table with cold determination. And every single contract executed by my mother over the past three months will undergo an immediate, independent federal audit starting this afternoon.

Henderson slowly nodded his head in silent agreement, recognizing that Ethan’s return had fundamentally shifted the power dynamics of the entire corporation back to where it rightfully belonged.
—Welcome home, Ethan, Henderson said softly, offering a respectful nod. Let’s clean house.
