Chapter 10 - The Awakening and The Covenant of Salt

The pale, crisp morning light reflected off two feet of pristine, untouched snow that blanketed the estate grounds.

Vincent Rossy opened his eyes.

The heavy, suffocating fog that had clouded his brain for half a year was completely, miraculously gone.

His head was clear.

His mouth tasted clean, devoid of the persistent, vile metallic tang that had haunted his every waking moment since the assassination attempt.

His body felt grounded, rested, and fundamentally restored.

He moved his right hand slightly and felt a soft, warm weight resting against his fingers.

He turned his head slowly across the pillow.

Norah was asleep beside the bed, sitting curled on the thick wool rug with her cheek resting against the edge of the mattress.

Her auburn hair had tumbled loose across her shoulders, catching the golden rays of the morning sun.

Her small, delicate hand was still tightly wrapped around his fingers, holding onto him with the fierce, protective loyalty of a guardian angel who had refused to abandon her post during the darkest hours of the storm.

Vincent lay motionless, barely daring to breathe, terrified that the slightest movement would break the profound peace filling the room.

In his thirty-four years of life, he had been feared, obeyed, betrayed, and served.

He had bought loyalty with suitcases of cash and enforced obedience with gunfire and terror.

Yet never in his entire existence had another human being sat through a freezing night in the dark, asking for nothing, simply holding his hand against the cold.

He gently lifted his left hand and, with an exquisite tenderness that seemed impossible for a man whose orders had ended dozens of lives, brushed a stray curl of auburn hair away from Norah's sleeping face.

Norah stirred at the touch.

Her eyelashes fluttered open, her hazel eyes blinking against the bright morning light.

For a second, confusion registered on her face, followed immediately by sharp, maternal panic.

She sat up straight, instantly reaching her hand up to touch Vincent's forehead.

"Your fever," she whispered, her voice rough from sleep.

Her palm rested flat against his skin.

It was cool and dry.

"It broke," Norah breathed, a radiant, breathtaking smile breaking across her tired face.

"It's completely gone."

Vincent did not move away from her touch.

He reached up and gently covered her hand with his own, holding her palm against his cheek.

"You stayed the entire night," Vincent said softly, his voice thick with an emotion he had never permitted himself to feel.

"I couldn't leave you," Norah replied honestly, her cheeks flushing a delicate pink as she realized how close they were sitting.

"You spent six months fighting that poison alone in the dark, Vincent. Nobody should have to fight for their life alone."

A quiet knock sounded at the bedroom door.

Enzo stepped inside, carrying a security folder, but stopped dead in his tracks when he saw Norah sitting beside the bed and Vincent holding her hand.

A rare, genuine look of profound relief and respect washed over the old enforcer's weathered face.

"Forgive the interruption, Boss," Enzo said, clearing his throat quietly.

"The blizzard has cleared. The city roads are opening. The waterfront captains are requesting a formal audience at noon to swear their renewed loyalty to the Rossy seat."

Vincent slowly sat up against the pillows, not letting go of Norah's hand until she gently pulled it back to stand up.

"Let them wait until two o'clock, Enzo," Vincent commanded calmly.

"The Don does not conduct business on an empty stomach."

Vincent swung his legs over the side of the bed, standing up with absolute, effortless stability.

He looked down at Norah, his dark eyes carrying an intensity that made her breath catch in her throat.

"What are we having for breakfast, Norah?"

Norah looked at the powerful, restored sovereign standing before her, then down at her own hands that had scrubbed his floors and cooked his scraps.

"Cornmeal porridge, Vincent," she answered with a quiet, confident smile.

"Boiled with fresh cream, toasted pumpkin seeds, and a pinch of coarse sea salt. Simple peasant food to build your strength for the captains."

May you like

Vincent stepped close to her, looking directly down into her eyes with an unyielding, unbreakable promise etched into his features.

"In the old country, Norah, when a man shares bread and salt with the woman who saved his soul, it is called a covenant," Vincent murmured, his voice low and intimate.
