Chapter 3 - The Midnight Eviction

The ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner of the dining room was the only sound left in the house.

Luca’s chest rose and fell in rapid, shallow breaths.

The arrogance that had defined his entrance twenty minutes ago had completely vanished.

His gaze darted frantically across the forged loan document, staring at Nora Ellison’s name written in shaky blue ink.

Beside him, Chloe’s face had turned completely white.

Even with her limited understanding of corporate law, she understood the word ‘forgery.’

“Luca?” Chloe’s voice was high and trembling.

“What is she talking about?”

“You told me this entire lake parcel was fully paid off through the development fund!”

“You told me the deed was clean!”

“Shut up, Chloe!” Luca snapped, his veneer of sophistication shattering into raw desperation.

He shoved his hands into his suit pockets, pacing back and forth across the dining room floor.

“Nora, listen to me,” Luca began, holding up his hands in a placating gesture.

“There’s a perfectly logical explanation for that document.”

“It was an emergency liquidity bridge for the SouthPark Medical Pavilion project.”

“The commercial bank delayed the secondary bond disbursement, and the concrete contractors were threatening to pull their crews.”

“If we lost that contract, Vance Capital would have suffered a forty-million-dollar default penalty.”

“I didn’t forge your signature to hurt anyone!”

“I acted as an implied power of attorney under the umbrella partnership to protect the family firm!”

My mother didn’t flinch.

She looked at him with an expression of profound pity and disgust.

“Implied power of attorney does not exist for an irrevocable trust, Luca,” Nora said coldly.

“You are a licensed developer in the state of North Carolina.”

“You know that forging a trustee’s signature on a commercial instrument is a Class C felony.”

“It carries an automatic mandatory minimum of four to six years in federal prison.”

Luca spun toward me, his eyes wide with a manic, cornered fury.

“Jessica! You’re going to let your mother talk to me like this?” he yelled, leaning over the table toward me.

“I did that to save our company!”

“The company that pays for your lifestyle, your luxury vehicles, and your social standing!”

“If I go down for that bridge loan, Vance Capital collapses with me!”

“Your name is on the general partnership guarantee, Jessica!”

“If the bank defaults on that loan, they will seize everything you own!”

I looked at him calmly, feeling nothing but a profound sense of detachment.

The man I had loved for fourteen years wasn't just a cheat; he was a coward who hid behind threats.

“The bank won’t be seizing anything, Luca,” I said softly.

I opened my own leather briefcase sitting on the floor beside my chair.

I pulled out a thick, bound forensic audit report prepared by Wright & Associates.

“Because that three-point-five million dollar bridge loan never went to the SouthPark Medical Pavilion,” I continued.

I dropped the audit report onto the table with a heavy thud.

“Julian Wright spent the last three weeks tracking the wire transfers from that fraudulent loan.”

“The money was routed through two intermediate escrow accounts in Delaware.”

“And then, eighty-four hours later, it was wired directly into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands.”

I shifted my eyes toward Chloe, whose hands were now visibly shaking.

“An account registered under an entity named Apex Horizon Holdings,” I said, watching Chloe flinch.

“Whose registered agent happens to be Chloe Ruiz’s maternal uncle in San Juan.”

Chloe let out a choked gasp, taking a step backward away from Luca.

Luca froze, his eyes bulging as he stared at the banking wire confirmations laid out in black and white.

“You... you audited the private escrow accounts?” Luca whispered, his voice trembling with horror.

“For eighteen months, Luca,” I replied, my voice steady and unwavering.

“You thought you were outsmarting me because I stayed in the office while you played the celebrity executive.”

“You thought that because I didn't yell when you came home smelling of cheap hotel soap, I was blind.”

“I gave you fourteen years to show an ounce of loyalty or respect.”

“Instead, you stole from my mother, you stole from our employees, and you brought your mistress into my home to demand an eviction.”

Luca’s jaw worked silently, trying and failing to find words.

Suddenly, he reached forward, his fingers clawing toward the folders on the table, trying to snatch the forensic audit and the forged deed.

Before his fingers could touch the paper, I pressed a discreet button on the underside of the dining table.

The exterior estate lights flooded the perimeter in blinding white halogen illumination.

Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the gravel driveway crunched under the tires of two approaching vehicles.

The synchronized flashing of red and blue emergency lights danced across the dark surface of Lake Norman.

Chloe screamed, dropping her designer handbag onto the floor.

“Luca, the police are outside!” she shrieked, backing toward the front door.

“You told me this was handled!”

“You told me she had no proof!”

“Shut your mouth, Chloe!” Luca roared, his face turning purple with rage.

He turned back to me, his chest heaving.

“You called the sheriff on your own husband?”

“I didn’t call the sheriff on my husband, Luca,” I said coldly.

“I called private security and the Iredell County Sheriff’s Department to report an active home invasion and criminal trespassing.”

The heavy front doors swung open.

Two uniformed sheriff’s deputies stepped into the foyer, accompanied by Marcus Campbell, the head of our private estate security.

Marcus had worked for my father’s family for twenty-five years.

He was six-foot-three, built like a vault, and his hand rested firmly on his duty belt.

“Good evening, Mrs. Vance,” Marcus said, nodding respectfully toward my mother and me.

“Is there a problem here?”

“Yes, Marcus,” I said, rising to my feet for the first time that evening.

I stood tall, smoothing down my cashmere sweater, looking down at Luca.

“These two individuals are unlawfully occupying private property belonging to the Ellison Trust.”

“They have been asked to vacate the premises immediately.”

“Luca Vance has fifteen minutes to collect his personal clothing from the guest room.”

“Ms. Ruiz has three minutes to pick up her coat and leave the gates.”

Deputy Miller stepped forward, his eyes locked onto Luca.

“Mr. Vance, I suggest you cooperate with the homeowner and step outside.”

Luca looked at the deputies, then at Marcus, and finally at me.

His fists were clenched so tightly that his knuckles were stark white.

“You think you won, Jessi?” Luca hissed, leaning close enough that I could smell his expensive scotch.

“Vance Capital is my kingdom.”

“The board answers to me.”

“I will tear down everything we built before I let you take a single dollar from that firm.”

May you like

“Fifteen minutes, Luca,” I replied coldly, checking my own watch.

“Your time started three minutes ago.”
