Chapter 2 - The Digital Breadcrumbs

I didn’t confront him immediately. If you want to catch a predator, you do not tap on the glass of their cage. You wait. You observe.
When Connor returned from Chicago, I kissed his cheek and asked about his trip. I cooked his favorite dinner. I smiled at Brenda when she came over uninvited, making snide remarks about the "quaint" way I decorated the living room. But late at night, while Connor slept, I became a ghost in my own home.
I hired a private cybersecurity firm to clone the data from his devices the next time he left them unattended. It cost me a fraction of my personal savings, but it gave me the keys to his kingdom. What I found destroyed the woman I used to be.
There was no business empire. Apex Solutions was bleeding money. To appease his wealthy investors, Connor had been faking revenue reports. But faking reports doesn't put cash in the bank. That was where Brenda came in.
I found the encrypted folders. I read the messages. Brenda had set up a shadow entity: Brenwood Advisory. They were siphoning investor capital out of Apex and hiding it offshore, funneling it through Brenwood.
But the most devastating betrayal wasn't the corporate fraud. It was the collateral.
Connor needed a massive loan to keep the Ponzi scheme afloat just a little longer. To get it, he forged my signature on a collateral agreement. He had pledged my father’s house. If Apex fell, I would lose the only thing I had left of my family.
The betrayal was so absolute, it bypassed grief and went straight to a cold, calcified rage. He didn't just steal from me. He thought I was stupid enough to take the fall. I didn't cry. Crying was for victims.
Instead, I made a phone call to the State Financial Crimes Division. I asked to speak to their lead investigator. Her name was Naomi Reyes, and when I laid out the digital breadcrumbs for her in a sterile, fluorescent-lit office downtown, she didn't just listen. She mobilized.

"We need him all in one place," Naomi had said, sliding my evidence file into a thick leather folder. "With the investors. Somewhere public, where he feels entirely in control."
I knew exactly when that would be. The annual Apex Solutions investor dinner.
