Chapter 13 - THE UNBREAKABLE LEDGER

Vance’s eyebrows knitted together in sudden, sharp suspicion.

"What did you just say?"

The director barked, taking a step backward toward his tactical team.

Before his guards could react, the screech of industrial sirens erupted not from outside, but from the building’s own internal emergency warning system.

The massive hydraulic security gates at both ends of the maintenance bay shuddered violently.

The reinforced steel grates were forced upward by heavy pneumatic rescue jacks.

Blinding, five-thousand-lumen tactical spotlights pierced the gloom of the subterranean garage, flooding the concrete in brilliant, surgical white light.

"Federal Bureau of Investigation!"

A voice boomed through an amplified tactical horn from the upper ramp.

"Special Agent Vance, drop your detonator and step away from the vehicles!

All personnel, lay down your weapons immediately!"

From both entry ramps, dozens of federal operators wearing olive-drab tactical uniforms with yellow 'FBI - CRITICAL INCIDENT RESPONSE' patches poured into the bay.

Their assault rifles were not aimed at Luca.

They were aimed squarely at Vance’s four private contractors.

Vance’s face transformed into a mask of pure, unadulterated panic.

"What is this?"

He shrieked, backing into the side of the black Suburban.

"I am the Deputy Director of the Organized Crime Task Force!

These men are under my command!"

Walking down the ramp behind the FBI tactical shield was a tall, sharp-featured woman in a navy pantsuit, accompanied by Daniel and six heavily armed federal agents with badge lanyards around their necks.

"You were the Deputy Director, Marcus."

The woman announced, her voice echoing with the absolute weight of the United States Department of Justice.

"I am Assistant Attorney General Miller.

We have been monitoring your live audio and visual transmission for the last eight minutes via the internal microwave link."

Miller held up a ruggedized tactical tablet displaying Vance’s face, captured in high-definition from the pinhole camera in my coat button.

Beside his image was the live, unencrypted data stream showing every offshore banking transfer, every signed nephrology manifest, and the precise chemical formulations used on the children of the Cicero facility.

"Your transmission was mirrored directly to the Attorney General’s desk in Washington three minutes ago, Vance."

Miller continued, her eyes burning with disgusted contempt.

"The President has already authorized your immediate suspension and federal detention without bail under domestic terrorism statutes."

Vance’s private contractors looked at the sea of FBI assault rifles surrounding them.

Slowly, systematically, all four men released the slings of their submachine guns and dropped them onto the concrete floor with loud clatters.

They raised their hands and fell to their knees.

Vance stood alone beside the Suburban, his eyes darting frantically toward the small black detonator in his trembling fist.

"You think you’ve won?"

Vance screamed, his voice breaking into hysterical madness.

"If I go down, the boy dies with me!"

He raised his thumb to slam down on the red trigger button.

He never got the chance.

Luca moved with the explosive speed of a striking viper.

He didn't draw a gun.

He covered the fifteen feet of open concrete in three blinding strides, his right fist driving into Vance’s jaw with the force of a sledgehammer.

The impact broke the director’s jawbone with a sickening crack that echoed across the bay.

Vance was lifted off his feet, crashing violently against the reinforced steel quarter-panel of the SUV before slumping into the dirt.

The black detonator tumbled from his limp fingers, skittering across the floor until my foot stopped it.

Luca didn't deliver a second strike.

He didn't need to.

He turned his back on the broken federal director and sprinted directly toward the rear doors of the ambulance.

"Leo!"

I cried, racing behind him, completely ignoring the federal agents moving in to secure Vance.

Luca grabbed the heavy chrome handles of the ambulance doors and ripped them open with a violent wrench.

Inside, the sterile air smelled of rubbing alcohol and fresh saline.

Lying on the center gurney was my brother.

Leo was awake.

His face was thin, his skin pale and translucent, but his bright brown eyes were wide with wonder and confusion.

His arterial lines were untouched, his heart monitor beating with a steady, peaceful rhythm.

Beside him sat Mrs.

Carter, the Moretti estate head housekeeper, holding Leo’s hand with quiet, grandmotherly warmth.

"Sophie?"

Leo whispered, his dry lips curving into a weak, trembling smile as I threw my arms around his shoulders.

"What’s happening?

Mrs.

Carter said Mr.

Moretti was taking us on a trip."

I buried my face in his hospital gown, weeping so hard my whole body shuddered against the metal gurney.

The concussive ringing in my left ear was still there, but in that moment, the only sound that mattered in the universe was the fragile, beautiful rhythm of my brother’s breathing.

"We’re going to Switzerland, Leo."

I sobbed against his neck, my fingers smoothing his messy hair.

"We’re going to a clinic where they’re going to fix your kidneys.

You’re never going to see a dialysis machine again."

Luca stood at the open doors of the ambulance, watching us with an expression of quiet, reverent relief.

Assistant Attorney General Miller walked up to the rear bumper, looking at Luca with professional wariness.

"Mr.

Moretti."

Miller said quietly.

"The evidence your maid provided has dismantled the most corrupt federal apparatus in the history of the Northern District of Illinois.

However, there is still the matter of your family's syndicate, the shootout at Oak Harbor, and the death of Salvatore Bellini."

Luca turned toward the federal prosecutor, his face calm, dignified, and entirely stripped of the violence that had defined his ancestors.

"I am ready to speak with your grand jury, General Miller."

Luca replied, holding out his wrists.

"Under one condition."

Miller raised an eyebrow.

"What condition?"

Luca looked back at Leo and me inside the ambulance.

"Leo Bennett boards the medical transport to Zurich within the hour, accompanied by Dr.

Hayes and Sophie.

Every dollar required for his cellular therapy will be drawn from my personal, audited legitimate accounts.

Once that aircraft enters international airspace, I will sign every dissolution document your office puts in front of me."

Miller looked at the bruised, concussed maid holding her dying brother.

Then she looked at the mob boss who had just surrendered an empire worth hundreds of millions of dollars to keep a promise to the help.

"Deal, Mr.

Moretti."

May you like

Miller said softly.

"Get the boy to the airport."
