Chapter 8 - A NEW EMPIRE BUILT ON BREAKFAST

Three days later, the sun broke over New York City, casting a brilliant golden light across the manicured lawns of the Rinaldi estate.
Inside the grand kitchen, the atmosphere was entirely transformed. There was no spilled orange juice, no flying apples, no shattered porcelain.
Four six-year-old boys sat quietly at the dining table, neatly eating their pancakes, occasionally arguing in whispers over who got the last slice of bacon.
At the head of the table sat Victor Rinaldi, wearing a slightly relaxed expression, reading the morning financial papers with a cup of hot black coffee.
And standing beside him, wearing a crisp new blazer and holding a folder filled with bank statements and employment contracts, was Serena Valente.
The doorbell rang.
Serena walked to the heavy oak front door and pulled it open. Standing on the porch was a middle-aged courier holding a thick legal envelope.
“Serena Valente?” the courier asked.
“Yes.”
“Sign here, please.”
Serena signed the pad, took the envelope, and tore it open right there on the porch. Her eyes scanned the official legal document bearing the family court judge’s signature.
Custody petition granted in full. Stable housing and verified financial stability confirmed.
Tears pricked the corners of Serena’s eyes, a heavy, suffocating weight lifting off her chest for the first time in years. Lucia was hers. Safe, secure, and never going anywhere.
“Good news?” a deep, velvet voice asked behind her.
Serena turned to see Victor standing in the doorway, his hands tucked into his trouser pockets, looking down at her with a gentle, questioning gaze.
“The best,” Serena whispered, a bright, radiant smile breaking across her face. “My daughter’s coming home tonight.”
Victor’s lips curved into a warm, genuine smile—the kind the tabloids swore didn’t exist. He reached out, gently taking the legal document from her hands and folding it neatly.
“Tell her there’s a permanent room waiting for her here,” Victor said softly. “And tell you... you’re officially hired. Permanent salary, full benefits, and a lifetime contract.”
Serena looked up into his dark, steady eyes, realizing that the broken, dangerous mafia boss had somehow become the anchor she never knew she needed.
“Does that contract include cooking dinner every night?” Serena asked with a playful smirk.
“Only if you let me help,” Victor replied, offering his arm.

From the dining room, Marco popped his head around the corner, shouting, “Dad! Serena! Are we having spaghetti tonight or what?!”
Serena laughed, linking her arm through Victor’s as they walked back toward the kitchen, ready to face whatever chaos—or love—tomorrow brought.
