Chapter 6 - A New Beginning Three months later.

The morning sun rose softly over the rolling green hills of Vermont, casting a warm golden light across the old wooden barn and the newly renovated farmhouse. The crisp autumn air smelled of pine, fresh hay, and rich soil.

Lena sat on the porch steps, drinking a hot cup of coffee. The debt on her family farm was completely gone, paid in full by Don Matteo Moretti as a token of eternal gratitude. But Lena hadn't returned to Vermont alone.

Beside her on the porch lay Titan.

His coat was thick, shiny, and dark once again. The chemical toxins had been completely flushed from his system by the best veterinary specialists in the country. Though his sight would never return, he had learned to navigate the farm with incredible ease, using his heightened senses of smell and hearing. He was no longer the violent, terrified beast trapped in an isolation cell. He was peaceful, majestic, and deeply content.

A sleek black sedan slowly pulled up the gravel driveway, stopping near the barn.

Don Matteo Moretti stepped out of the car. He wore a simple wool coat instead of his usual intimidating mafia suit, looking more like an old gentleman enjoying a quiet morning in the countryside.

Titan’s ears perked up. He lifted his head, snuffed the air, and gave a light, friendly wag of his heavy tail. He no longer feared the voice of his old master, knowing that the evil in the Moretti home had been purged forever.

"He looks good," Matteo said, walking up the porch steps and sitting down beside Lena. He reached out and gently petted Titan’s massive head. The dog leaned into his touch happily.

"He loves it here," Lena smiled, watching the clouds move across the valley. "Plenty of space, no loud city noises, no secret plots."

"I came to deliver a few things," Matteo said, handing her a small leather bound document. "The deed to the surrounding fifty acres of land. I bought it for you. Consider it an expansion for the sanctuary you wanted to build."

Lena looked at the document in shock. "Matteo... this is too much. You’ve already done so much for my family."

"It’s not a gift, Lena. It’s an investment," Matteo replied, his eyes soft with genuine warmth. "You saved my life, and you saved my soul when you saved Titan. I am converting my family's resources into legitimate animal rehabilitation foundations. I want you to run the main sanctuary right here."

Lena looked down at Titan, who let out a contented sigh and rested his chin heavy across her lap.

She remembered the dark, cold hallway of the shelter, the sound of the low, circling moan, and the desperate eyes behind the wire-reinforced glass. She had walked into that hallway as a poor, exhausted delivery driver with nothing to her name except a trick her grandmother taught her. Now, she had found her true purpose, a home restored, and a bond that had defied violence and hatred.

"I accept," Lena said softly, a bright, beautiful smile lighting up her face.

Matteo nodded in satisfaction, looking out over the tranquil Vermont landscape.

The wind rustled gently through the autumn leaves, carrying the peaceful sounds of the farm. Beside them, the mafia boss’s blind dog closed his eyes, resting peacefully in the warmth of the sun, finally safe, finally home.
