Chapter 9 - THE INTERROGATION IN THE SUB-BASEMENT: UNRAVELING THE FINAL THREAD OF THE WEXLER CARTEL

Arthur Pendelton stared up at Abigail, his chest heaving, his thin, spectacles-wearing face slick with cold sweat. He didn't try to run. He knew the tactical math: a cornered accountant against an elite federal tactical operative was a game that ended in one second flat.
“You... you’re the undercover asset,” Pendelton whispered, his voice trembling as he recognized the sharp, unyielding gaze that had put Simon Wexler behind bars. “Agent Preston.”
“And you’re the ghost accountant trying to resurrect a dead cartel using stolen blood money,” Abigail replied, pulling a pair of steel flex-cuffs from her tactical belt and tossing them onto his lap. “Put them on, Arthur. Unless you want me to do it for you.”
Trembling, Pendelton picked up the flex-cuffs and snapped them around his own wrists, his breath coming in ragged gasps. “You... you can't arrest me like this. I’m a civilian financial consultant! I demand to speak to an attorney!”
“You can speak to a federal magistrate judge by morning,” Abigail said, hauling him up to his feet by his collar with effortless strength and slamming him against the concrete pillar to secure him. “Right now, you’re going to tell me every single name on the 2.3 million dollar wire distribution list. Who in the federal judiciary, the local police department, and the corporate shipping sector was still on Simon Wexler’s payroll?”
Pendelton squeezed his eyes shut, a bitter, defiant smirk touching his pale lips. “Go to hell, Agent Preston. You think arresting me stops the network? Simon was just the face on the waterfront. There are others. Men with more power, more money, and more reach than you could ever imagine touching.”
Abigail didn't lose her temper. She didn't raise her voice. She simply stepped closer, her face inches from his, her dark eyes narrowing into an expression of chilling, absolute certainty.
“Let them come, Arthur,” Abigail whispered, her voice like ice water running over stones. “I survived a mafia marriage, an undercover sting, and a syndicate hit squad in a single season. I have a federal badge, an endless supply of ammunition, and a very low tolerance for corrupt old men who think they can buy the city of Philadelphia.”
She reached up, tapping the encrypted satellite transceiver on her tactical vest to connect directly to the FBI command bunker.

“Director Vance, this is Agent Preston,” she reported clearly into the comms channel. “Package secured. Digital archives downloaded. Send a transport unit to the Packer Avenue sub-basement. We’re wrapping up.”
“Copy that, Agent Preston,” Vance’s voice crackled back through the earpiece, laced with profound relief and hard-earned respect. “Welcome home.”
