Chapter 5 - The Vow Beneath the Moon

The armored SUV rolled through the iron security gates of Gabriel’s Chicago estate just as the first pale streaks of dawn began to paint the eastern sky in shades of bruised purple and gold.

Inside the grand foyer, Mrs. Alvarez—revived and bandaged from her head injury—was waiting anxiously by the bottom of the grand staircase.

When she saw Oliver walk through the front doors holding Madeline’s hand, the elderly housekeeper burst into tears and rushed forward to sweep the boy into a fierce, suffocating embrace.

“Oh, my sweet angel, thank God in heaven you’re safe!” Mrs. Alvarez sobbed, covering Oliver’s face with kisses.

Madeline smiled softly, feeling a profound sense of gratitude wash over her as she watched them.

Gabriel placed a warm hand on Madeline’s shoulder, guiding her gently away from the emotional reunion toward his private study.

“Go wash up and get some rest,” Gabriel instructed gently.

“I need to handle the remaining cleanup with the council.”

Madeline stopped at the threshold of the study, turning around to face him with a look of fierce determination in her eyes.

“I’m not hiding in a bedroom anymore, Gabriel,” Madeline said evenly.

“Not after everything that happened tonight.”

“You told me you wanted to protect me from fear, but I’ve learned that running from fear only makes the monsters bolder.”

Gabriel stared at her for a long moment, a slow, appreciative smile curving the corners of his lips.

“You truly are something else, Madeline Hayes,” Gabriel murmured, stepping closer until he was standing only inches away from her.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the diamond ring she had thrown onto his desk just hours before the explosion.

The sparkling stones caught the morning light streaming through the stained-glass windows behind them.

Gabriel took her left hand in his, his fingers warm and steady as he slid the ring back onto her finger where it belonged.

“This was supposed to be a temporary shield to fool the city,” Gabriel said softly, looking straight into her eyes.

“But after everything we faced tonight, I realize I never want to take it off.”

“And I never want you to take it off either.”

Madeline looked down at the diamond ring gleaming against her skin, then back up at the man who had burned down half of Chicago to bring her son back.

“You know this isn’t a fairy tale, Gabriel,” Madeline whispered, her voice laced with cautious honesty.

“We live in a world of blood, betrayal, and enemies waiting in the dark.”

Gabriel cupped her cheek with his free hand, his thumb gently tracing the smooth contour of her jawline.

“Then we’ll rule the dark together,” Gabriel promised fiercely.

“Nobody touches my family.”

Madeline leaned into his touch, closing her eyes as the last remnants of her fear melted away into the quiet morning air.

She knew the road ahead would be filled with danger, rival syndicates, and hidden daggers.

But as she stood in the arms of Chicago’s most feared mafia boss, she knew one thing for certain: she was no longer a victim running for her life.
