Chapter 12 - The Apex Collapse

By 8:30 a.m., the tranquil morning routine across downtown Chicago was violently shattered.
Armored federal raid teams, accompanied by Luca’s elite security forces, struck three primary targets simultaneously.
The gleaming corporate tower of Apex Holdings on Michigan Avenue was breached within thirty seconds.
Trunks of paper documents, mirrored server racks, and encrypted hard drives were hauled out into the morning sunlight in heavy steel crates.
Simultaneously, federal agents swarmed the private railyards in Pilsen, freezing fifty cargo containers loaded with contraband goods.
I stood beside Luca on the observation deck of the federal courthouse, watching the live helicopter footage broadcast across the news screens.
Reporters in heavy raincoats shouted into their microphones as federal agents led executives out of the Apex tower in handcuffs.
“They’re seizing the primary bank accounts in the Cayman islands as we speak,” Dante reported, stepping onto the balcony with a secure tablet.
“Julian Cross’s legal counsel has already abandoned ship.”
“And where is Cross himself?” Luca asked without turning his head.
“According to our wiretaps on his private jet hangar at Midway Airport,” Dante grinned, “his Gulfstream is currently grounded by federal aviation embargoes.”
“He’s trapped in the city.”
A wave of profound relief washed over my chest, loosening a knot I didn't know I was still carrying.
For twenty years, the shadow of Julian Cross had hung over my family like a dark cloud.
Now, the sky above Chicago was finally clearing.
Luca turned away from the railing, his dark gray eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my breath hitch.
“Your mother is resting comfortably in the secure medical suite downstairs, Grace,” Luca said softly.
“The federal prosecutor has already filed formal motions to restore the commercial lease on West Eighteenth Street and award full restitution from Apex assets.”
“She’ll never have to worry about rent or predatory landlords again.”
Tears pricked at the corners of my eyes, spilling over my lashes before I could stop them.
“Thank you, Luca,” I choked out, my voice trembling with raw emotion.
“You didn't just save my mother’s life last night.”
“You gave us our dignity back.”
Luca stepped closer, closing the distance between us until I could feel the warmth radiating from his broad shoulders.
“You saved my life first, Grace,” he reminded me gently, his hand reaching out to brush a stray lock of hair behind my ear.
“That debt can never be repaid with bearer bonds or real estate.”
Before I could find the words to respond, the heavy steel door behind us banged open.
Agent Miller rushed onto the observation deck, his face pale and urgent.
“Mr. Moretti! Ms. Parker!” Miller shouted over the wind.
“We just intercepted an encrypted radio transmission from Julian Cross’s personal security detail!”
Luca’s expression instantly hardened into lethal stone.
“What did they say?”
“Cross isn't trying to flee the city,” Miller gasped.

“He’s headed directly here, to the federal courthouse, with an armed commando team.”
“He’s coming to burn the evidence—and everyone in this building—to the ground.”
