Chapter 5 - The Trial of Steel and Shadows

Down in the subterranean cell, a sudden, violent crash echoed through the air ducts.

Before Carmine could pull the trigger, the steel vent grate burst outward with terrifying force. A hundred and ten pounds of fur, muscle, and fury detonated into the room like a missile.

Ghost slammed directly into Carmine's body, sending the elderly Don crashing into the concrete floor. The silver pistol clattered across the room.

"What the hell?!" screaming one of the guards, raising his rifle.

Ghost didn't hesitate. He spun, his powerful jaws clamping around the guard's knee, twisting down with immense force. The guard screamed as his leg snapped, dropping his weapon.

Outside, the air was shattered by a massive explosion.

Zara and Marco had detonated the external fuel tanks, blowing open the foundry’s primary steel blast doors. Smoke, fire, and alarms choked the night air as Marco’s team flooded the building, engaging Carmine's mercenaries in a fierce, chaotic firefight.

Zara sprinted through the blinding smoke, a stolen assault rifle slung across her shoulder, moving with a terrifying focus she never knew she possessed. The social worker who used to diffuse schoolyard fights was gone; in her place stood a woman fighting for the soul of her family.

She breached the subterranean level, stepping over fallen guards, her boots clicking against the wet concrete.

"Jun!" she screamed through the haze.

"Zara! Get down!" Jun shouted from inside the cell.

A shadow lunged at her from the doorway—Carmine's chief enforcer, a giant of a man wielding a heavy combat knife. He slashed downward. Zara ducked under the blade, the air whistling past her ear. She grabbed his wrist, using his momentum to pivot and slam his face into the concrete doorframe. The man staggered, but recovered, lunging again.

Before he could reach her, a white blur vaulted off the wall. Ghost clamped his jaws onto the attacker's throat, forcing the giant to the ground with a sickening thud. The man struggled for a moment before going completely limp.

Zara panted, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She rushed into the cell.

Jun was staring at her, his eyes wide with a mix of awe, disbelief, and profound love. "You... you actually came. You brought a war to Newark."

"I told you," Zara said, her voice cracking as she pulled a combat knife from her belt and rapidly sliced through the heavy zip-ties binding his wrists and ankles. "Nobody touches what's mine."

Jun collapsed forward, weak from blood loss, but Zara caught him, pulling his head against her chest. He wrapped his bruised arms around her, breathing in the scent of gunpowder and her familiar perfume.

"Are you okay?" she asked, tears finally breaking through her cold armor.

"I am now," Jun whispered, forcing a crooked smile despite his swollen lip. "Where's Carmine?"

Zara turned around. The room was empty. A hidden escape hatch near the back wall stood wide open, swinging gently on its hinges.

"He ran," Ghost let out a low growl, sniffing at the blood-stained edge of the hatch.

"He won't get far," Jun said, his voice turning cold as he picked up a dropped pistol from the floor. "It ends tonight."
