Chapter 10 - The Vanishing Sanctuary

Daniel threw a heavy tactical ladder down into the mouth of the cistern.
Luca did not wait for his men; he scrambled down the rungs with reckless abandon, dropping onto the damp gravel floor of the pit.
With a heavy pair of bolt cutters tossed down by Daniel, Luca severed the chain holding Michael to the stone wall with a single, furious snap.
Michael collapsed into his older brother’s arms, his emaciated body shivering uncontrollably against Luca’s tuxedo jacket.
"Luca... you came," Michael sobbed, his voice nothing more than a dry rattle against Luca’s shoulder.
"I'm here, Michael. I have you. You're safe."
Luca hauled his brother up the ladder with Daniel’s assistance, lifting him out into the garage bay like a father carrying a wounded child.
We laid Michael on a clean wool blanket spread across the concrete floor.
Dr. Harris’s emergency medical kit was in the back of the Lincoln; Daniel ran to fetch it while I knelt beside the two brothers.
Michael’s sunken eyes drifted across the room, past the blood on the floor, until they found Elena Rossi, who was now free and weeping softly into her hands.
Then Michael looked at me.
His gaze fell upon the bandage on my right hand.
"Who... who are you?" Michael whispered.
"Her name is Lily Carter," Luca answered for me, his hand resting firmly on his brother’s hollow chest.
"She saved your life, Michael."
"She found the porcelain bride."
A fragile, trembling smile touched Michael’s cracked lips.
"Anna..." Michael gasped suddenly, his breathing turning shallow and frantic. "Where is Anna?"
"Luca, you have to find her... she's eight months along now."
"Arthur’s men... they were tracking the safehouse in Evanston."
"They know she has the original ledger."
Luca went rigid.
"Arthur’s phone," Luca said, his head snapping toward Daniel, who was sprinting back with the medical bag.
"Daniel, bring me the burner phone we pulled off Arthur Sterling in the ballroom!"
Daniel dug into his pocket and handed a cheap black flip phone to Luca.
Luca opened the screen.
The backlight illuminated three unread messages from a contact labeled simply as Clean-1.
The first message, sent forty minutes ago: Target confirmed at Evanston brownstone on Maple Street.
The second message, sent twenty minutes ago: Asset 2 (old woman) was compromised. Arthur gave execution order for the wife.
The third message, sent exactly four minutes ago: Entry team breaching rear door. Fire will cover the evidence.
Luca’s face went completely bloodless.
"Evanston is twenty-five minutes north," Daniel said, his voice dropping into grim despair.
"Even with sirens, we can't make it through the storm in under twenty."
"We won't make it," Luca whispered, staring at the screen.
"Wait!" Elena Rossi cried out, stumbling toward us on her bruised legs.
"Anna isn't in Evanston!"
Luca spun around.
"What did you say?"
"The Evanston address was a decoy!" Elena gasped, clutching my shoulder for support.
"Michael told me to register the utility bills under Anna’s maiden name at the Evanston brownstone six months ago, knowing Arthur would eventually trace the water meter!"
"Anna has been living three blocks from here!"
"In the loft above my old bakery on Grand Avenue!"
Michael closed his eyes, let out a ragged breath of relief, and gripped Luca’s sleeve.
"She's above the ovens, Luca," Michael choked out. "Above the flour storage."
"There's no phone line."
"No internet."
"She doesn't know what's happening tonight."
"Arthur sent his cleanup crew to Evanston," Luca realized, his tactical mind snapping back into razor-sharp focus.
"Which means the team at the bakery hasn't moved yet."
"Daniel, call the west-side garrison."
"Have Marcus take ten men and surround the Grand Avenue block immediately."
"Do not use sirens."
"Do not use headlights."
"If anyone enters that bakery who isn't family, put them in the ground."
Luca stood up, his eyes blazing with the cold fire of a man who had walked through hell and found his purpose on the other side.
He turned to me.
"Lily."
"Yes, Mr. Moretti?"
"You're coming with us."
"Anna has spent six months living in terror of every man who wears a black suit."
"If she sees my men breaking down her door, she might run or do something desperate."
"She needs to see a woman who helped her save her husband."
"Will you stand with my family one more time tonight?"
I looked down at my hand.
The pain was still there, sharp and searing under the gauze.
The memory of Vanessa’s sneer, Arthur’s gun, and the cold metal of the hot sheet pan flashed through my mind.
May you like
Then I looked at Michael, who had survived six months in the dark earth because he refused to let them steal his family's future.
"I'll ride in the front, Mr. Moretti," I said.
