Chapter 10 - The Master Key Unlocked

Claire let out a sharp cry, lunging forward to grab Roman’s shooting arm.

"Roman, don't!" Claire screamed, digging her fingers into the thick fabric of his tactical jacket.

"If you pull that trigger, you are doing exactly what Silvio wants!"

"He killed my father, Claire," Roman snarled, his eyes burning with lethal fury, his finger tightening on the trigger.

"He betrayed the man who gave him a life, a home, and an empire."

Marcus did not flinch, nor did he raise his hands to defend himself.

He stared straight down the barrel of Roman’s pistol with hollow, resigned eyes.

"I stayed by your side for three years to atone for that sin, Roman," Marcus said softly.

"Every bullet I took for you, every clean hit, every hour of protection was meant to keep you alive until this day."

"I couldn't undo what Silvio forced me to do to your father."

"But I swore to God I would see Silvio DeLuca brought to justice before I died."

"If you need to end my life right here on this pier, take the shot."

"I won't stop you."

Claire pulled with all her strength against Roman’s arm, forcing him to meet her gaze.

"He saved my life at the motel, Roman!" Claire pleaded, her voice cutting through the mist.

"He brought down the power grid so you could save Isabella!"

"If you murder him now, you lose the only insider who knows how Silvio operates his tactical teams."

"My father didn't sacrifice his life so you could become an executioner in a parking lot."

Roman’s chest heaved with violent emotion as he looked into Claire’s desperate eyes.

For three years, Roman had lived only for vengeance and cold preservation.

Yet looking at this civilian woman who had braved gunfire, kidnappings, and terrifying secrets, something shifted in his soul.

Slowly, agonizingly, Roman lowered the hammer of the pistol and took a step back.

"If we survive this night, Marcus, your debt to this family ends," Roman said, his voice flat and merciless.

"You take your sister, you take her children, and you disappear from this continent forever."

"If I ever see your face again, I will finish what I started here."

Marcus lowered his head, swallowing hard.

"Understood, boss."

"Now get the portable field terminal from the van," Roman commanded, wiping the sea spray from his face.

"We decode the flash drive right now."

Marcus sprinted toward the medical van and returned within ninety seconds carrying a ruggedized military laptop.

They ducked into the sheltered alcove beneath Crane Four, out of the direct wind and rain.

Marcus plugged the encrypted storage drive recovered from Claire’s desk into the USB port.

A glaring red prompt appeared across the dark screen:

ENTER MASTER AIR-GAPPED CIPHER SEQUENCE. 2 ATTEMPTS REMAINING BEFORE TOTAL PURGE.

Claire knelt beside the screen, pulling the silver pocket watch from her pocket.

She held the miniature holographic wafer close to the screen light, reading the sixteen microscopic characters etched upon its surface.

"Alpha-Seven-Tango-Nine-Victor-Zero-X-Ray-Delta," Claire read, her voice steady and clear.

"Four-Seven-Echo-Zulu-Kilo-One-Nine-Nine."

Roman stepped in and typed the sequence into the mechanical keyboard with measured precision.

He pressed the return key.

For three agonizing seconds, the screen froze on a loading bar.

Then, a soft chime rang through the laptop speakers.

The red screen vanished, replaced by an expansive directory of thousands of decrypted documents, audio logs, and offshore wire transfers.

At the top of the folder sat a single multimedia file labeled: VITTORIO_DELUCA_TESTIMONY_NOV12.WAV.

Roman clicked the file.

A crackle of vintage tape hiss echoed from the laptop’s small speakers, followed by a voice Roman had not heard in three long years.

It was the voice of Vittorio DeLuca, deep, resonant, and weary.

"If my son Roman is listening to this recording, it means my brother Silvio has completed his treason."

"For twenty years, Silvio has operated an unauthorized narcotics channel through our southern shipping terminals."

"When I confronted him with the bank records, he threatened to execute my brother’s daughter, young Isabella."

"I transferred forty million dollars out of family reserves with the help of David Mercer to build a private war chest to insulate Roman from the coming collapse."

"Silvio is not just a traitor to our blood; he is an assassin who has sold our harbor rights to the Marcone cartel."

"To the Council of Families: Silvio DeLuca is stripped of his name, his seat, and his life."

"My son Roman is the sole legitimate Don of the DeLuca syndicate."

"Execute my will without mercy."

The audio recording clicked off into silence.

Roman stared at the glowing screen, his fists clenched so tight his skin turned ghostly white.

The truth was no longer a shadow or an unverified rumor.

It was an undeniable verdict delivered directly from beyond the grave.

Marcus looked up from his handheld radio, his face grim.

"Boss, intercepting Council comms right now."

"Silvio has called an emergency dawn assembly of the High Council at Villa Bellisario."

"He is telling the five syndicate bosses that you orchestrated Isabella’s kidnapping to seize total authority."

"He is calling for an immediate vote to strip you of your rank and place a contract on your head."

Roman closed the laptop screen with a sharp, decisive snap.

May you like

"Then we don't make him wait for dawn," Roman said, turning toward the black sedans.

"We go home and deliver my father's judgment."
