Chapter 3 - The Siege of the Moretti Compound

Glass showered the dining room like a glittering hail of death as heavy-caliber rounds tore through the antique curtains.

Plaster exploded from the ceiling, choking the room with blinding white dust as the deafening roar of automatic weapons echoed through the halls.

Luca moved by pure instinct, diving across the floor, tackling Elena Ruiz by the waist, and dragging her behind the heavy mahogany table.

The thick wood groaned as a dozen high-powered rounds slammed into the exterior, wood chips spraying across Luca’s tailored jacket.

"Marco!" Luca bellowed into the chaos, reaching for the tactical radio clipped to his belt.

The radio sputtered with static, screams, and the rattling roar of submachine guns coming from the front courtyard.

"Front gate is breached, Boss!" Marco’s frantic voice crackled through the speaker.

"They blew the iron doors with thermite! We're outnumbered three to one! Falcone’s hit squads are already in the foyer!"

Luca pulled his secondary weapon—a customized matte-black semi-automatic—and slammed it into Elena’s trembling hands.

"Do you know how to use this?" Luca shouted over the thunderous hammering of rifle fire shredding the wainscoting above them.

Elena gripped the cold checkered grip, her fingers slipping slightly against the spilled wine on her skin, but her grip didn't falter.

"My father taught me before he was killed," she shouted back, racking the slide with practiced, lethal efficiency.

Luca felt a sudden surge of respect pierce through the blinding fog of adrenaline; she wasn't just a survivor, she was a soldier's daughter.

"Stay low, stay behind me, and don't fire unless someone rounds that corner without a Moretti pin on their lapel," Luca commanded.

Another barrage of shotgun blasts blew the double dining doors off their heavy brass hinges, sending splinters spinning through the air.

Two masked men clad in black tactical gear burst into the smoke-filled dining room, sweeping their assault rifles across the shattered table.

Luca didn't hesitate; he leaned out from behind the mahogany barricade and fired two precise rounds into the chest of the lead gunman.

The man collapsed instantly, his rifle skittering across the floor, while the second shooter wheeled around to return fire.

Before Luca could realign his sights, a sharp, clean gunshot cracked beside his ear.

The second gunman jerked violently, a bullet entering right through his throat, collapsing backward into the hallway with a choked rattle.

Luca turned his head in disbelief to see Elena Ruiz holding the smoking semi-automatic with both hands, her eyes wide but dead-focused.

"Good shot," Luca muttered, the corner of his mouth twitching despite the mortal peril surrounding them.

"He was aiming at your shoulder," Elena replied, her breath coming in ragged gasps through the thick plaster smoke.

More heavy boots thundered down the hallway, accompanied by the distinct, sickening screams of wounded guards in the foyer.

Luca knew the layout of his brownstone better than anyone alive; it had been designed by his father as an urban fortress.

However, a fortress was utterly useless if the enemy already held the blueprints and the access codes to the internal security grids.

Daniel Whitmore had spent two years memorizing every blind spot, every reinforced wall, and every emergency exit route.

"The sub-basement," Luca realized out loud, cold dread washing over him.

"If they take the sub-basement, they control the automated iron blast doors that seal this entire compound."

"They didn't come to kill you immediately, Mr. Moretti," Elena whispered, reloading her magazine with cold, terrifying clarity.

"They came to extract Daniel and Matteo before the blast doors lock them inside."

Luca cursed under his breath, realizing she was entirely right; the assault was an extraction mission backed by overwhelming firepower.

Grabbing Elena by the forearm, Luca led her through the burning wreckage of the dining room toward the hidden service staircase.

The narrow corridor was dark, lit only by the flickering red emergency lights that had automatically triggered when the main power was severed.

Down below, through the concrete floorboards, the muffled sounds of gunfire and shouting confirmed that the fighting had reached the cellars.

Luca kicked open the reinforced metal door leading to the landing overlooking the sub-basement corridor.

Smoke billowed up the stairwell, smelling of cordite, burning insulation, and spilled industrial cleaning chemicals.

At the bottom of the stairs, two Moretti capos lay motionless in pools of blood outside the heavy vault door.

Marco was pinned behind an overturned steel workbench, firing his handgun in desperate, rhythmic bursts down the access tunnel.

"Marco! Status!" Luca yelled, descending the iron steps three at a time, keeping Elena shielded behind his massive frame.

"They got Daniel out of the holding cell, Boss!" Marco roared, ducking as a volley of high-velocity rounds sparked off the steel bench.

"Matteo broke his own thumb to slip the cuffs and grabbed an MP5 from the armory rack! They're pushing toward the tunnel!"

The access tunnel was an old subterranean bootlegger route running two blocks underground toward the Gowanus Canal.

If Daniel and Matteo reached the canal exit, a Falcone speedboat would whisk them away into the New York harbor, out of reach forever.

"Elena, stay behind this concrete pillar!" Luca ordered, pulling a flashbang grenade from a tactical locker beside the door.

"I am not hiding while my father’s murderers escape," Elena said, stepping beside him, her hazel eyes ablaze with cold fury.

Luca looked at the bruise darkening her jaw, realizing that trying to bench her was like trying to stop an incoming tide.

"Cover my left side," Luca snapped, pulling the pin from the canister with his teeth.

Luca hurled the flashbang down the narrow corridor, where it bounced off the concrete floor with a metallic clatter.

A deafening, concussive boom rocked the tunnel, accompanied by a blinding magnesium flash that bleached the darkness white.

Screams of disoriented men echoed through the concrete hallway, and Luca surged forward into the smoke like a vengeful demon.

He fired methodically, putting down two Falcone extraction operators who were clutching their ears against the concrete walls.

Behind him, Elena raised her weapon and double-tapped a third operative who was attempting to raise a sidearm from the floor.

At the far end of the tunnel, lit by the green emergency exit sign, stood Daniel Whitmore and Matteo Moretti.

Daniel had discarded his ruined ivory jacket, wearing a blood-splattered dress shirt, his eyes wide with manic, unhinged desperation.

Matteo stood beside him, clutching a submachine gun, his eyes locking onto his older brother through the drifting chemical haze.

"Drop the weapon, Matteo!" Luca roared, his voice shaking the concrete foundations of the century-old brownstone.

"He won't drop it, Luca!" Daniel shrieked, backing toward the heavy iron hatch that opened directly to the canal water.

"Tell him what Don Carmine told you before he bled out, Matteo! Tell him who really signed the hit on our own father!"

Luca stopped dead in his tracks, twenty feet away from his younger brother, his weapon trembling in his grip for the first time in his life.

The air in the tunnel turned arctic cold, smelling of stagnant canal water and twenty years of rotten family secrets.

"What is he talking about, Matteo?" Luca asked, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped beast.

Matteo’s face was slick with sweat and tears, his finger hovering over the trigger of the submachine gun.

"Dad didn't want you to take over the family, Luca," Matteo sobbed, his voice cracking with twenty years of repressed poison.

"You were too ruthless, too violent, too obsessed with the old ways... Dad was going to hand the entire legitimate empire to me."

Luca stared at his little brother, the boy he had taught to ride a bicycle, the boy he had protected from rival gangs for two decades.

"You're lying," Luca whispered.

"I am not lying!" Matteo screamed, pointing his trembling gun directly at Luca’s chest.

"Carmine wrote the transfer papers! He was going to cut you out of the will completely! Daniel’s father was the lawyer who drafted it!"

Elena stepped forward, her voice cutting through the brothers' tragic standoff like a cold surgical blade.

"And when Don Carmine realized Daniel's father was secretly selling the family docks to the Falcones, he cancelled the transfer," Elena said.

Matteo looked at Elena, his eyes wide with shock. "How do you know that?"

"Because my father was in the room when Don Carmine burned the contract in the bakery oven," Elena said, advancing another step.

"Your father didn't betray you, Matteo. You were tricked by Daniel's family into believing a lie so they could use you to destroy your brother."

Daniel saw the doubt flickering across Matteo's face and panicked completely.

"She's lying to you, Matteo! Shoot him! Shoot them both right now, or we're dead!" Daniel screamed, grabbing at Matteo’s arm.

In the blinding panic of the moment, Matteo swung the submachine gun toward Elena, his finger tensing on the trigger.

Luca didn't hesitate; the brotherly love that had blinded him for two years vanished beneath the raw instinct to protect innocent blood.

Luca fired two rounds.

The heavy hollow-points struck Matteo squarely in the chest, the impact lifting the younger brother off his feet and slamming him into the hatch.

Matteo slid down the iron door, leaving a thick smear of dark blood against the cold metal, his weapon clattering onto the floor.

"Matteo!" Daniel shrieked, terror replacing his arrogance as he realized his shield was gone.

Daniel scrambled for the hatch wheel, spinning it with bloody fingers, trying desperately to breach the canal exit.

Before the heavy iron could swing open, Elena closed the distance, her foot lashing out with explosive force against Daniel’s knee.

A sickening crunch echoed through the tunnel as Daniel’s joint buckled backward, sending him crashing onto the wet concrete.

Daniel screamed in agonizing pain, clutching his broken leg, thrashing like a wounded snake against the sewer slime.

Luca walked slowly toward the fallen men, his gun lowered, his breathing heavy and ragged in the echoing subterranean silence.

He looked down at his dying brother, whose eyes were fluttering open, blood bubbling at the corners of his mouth.

Luca dropped to his knees beside Matteo, his hands pressing against the torn fabric of his brother's chest, trying in vain to stem the flow.

"Why, Matteo?" Luca whispered, a tear finally cutting through the soot on his cheek. "Why didn't you just come to me?"

Matteo looked up at the brother who had shot him, his hand weakly reaching up to touch Luca’s collar.

"Because... Daniel said... you would kill me... if you ever found out... I helped set up Dad's car..." Matteo choked, his pulse fading rapidly.

"I loved you, you idiot," Luca wept softly, the terrifying mob boss breaking into pieces over the body of his last living relative.

"I would have forgiven you anything."

Matteo’s hand fell limp against the cold concrete floor, his eyes glazing over as the last breath left his lungs.

Silence descended on the tunnel, broken only by Daniel’s pathetic whimpering and the sound of distant police sirens echoing above ground.

Luca stood up slowly, wiping the tear from his face, turning his dead, merciless gaze upon Daniel Whitmore.

Daniel looked up from the floor, his face twisted in horror, recognizing that there was no mercy left in the universe for him.

"Luca... please... take me to a hospital... I can tell you where the Falcone safe houses are..." Daniel pleaded, dragging himself backward.

Luca raised his weapon, leveling the barrel right between Daniel’s terrified, tear-filled eyes.

"You ruined my family," Luca said softly, his voice devoid of all anger, leaving only cold, infinite retribution.

"You murdered my father, you corrupted my brother, and you struck the daughter of the bravest man I ever knew."

Before Luca could pull the trigger, Elena’s hand reached out, gently pressing down on the slide of his weapon.

Luca turned his head, his dark eyes blazing with dangerous confusion.

"Elena, don't stop me," Luca growled. "He deserves to die in this sewer."

Elena looked down at Daniel, her hazel eyes cold and resolute, showing no fear of the blood-drenched Don beside her.

"Death is an escape, Mr. Moretti," Elena said with chilling precision.

"He wants a quick bullet so he doesn't have to face what comes next."

Luca paused, the cold logic of her words cutting through the red haze of his vengeance.

"What do you propose we do with him, Elena?"

Elena knelt down beside Daniel, her face inches from the man who had ordered her to scrub his jacket on her knees an hour ago.

"He spent two years gathering evidence on the Falcone family to use as leverage against you," Elena whispered into Daniel’s ear.

"He has the account numbers, the federal informant lists, and the shipping manifests stored on an encrypted drive."

Daniel gasped, his eyes widening in pure horror as he realized how thoroughly the maid had unraveled his entire life.

"How... how do you know about the drive?" Daniel choked out.

Elena reached into the small pocket sewn into the hem of her black apron, pulling out a slim silver USB thumb drive.

"Because while you were busy shoving me to the floor tonight, Mr. Whitmore," Elena said with a cold, triumphant smile,

"I took the drive from your inner cigarette case."
