Chapter 9 - The Shadow Beneath the Manor

Roman threw his entire weight against the oak bookcase.

The heavy wooden panel burst outward with a deafening crash, splintering the decorative moldings into kindling.

Roman stepped into the grand reception hall like an avenging ghost, his black tactical weapon raised and steady.

Behind him, Frank Doyle stepped through the breach, his old police revolver leveled directly at Vincent’s chest.

Grace entered third, holding the portable cassette player in both hands, her chin held high and her eyes burning with icy resolve.

The thirty men assembled inside the cavernous, chandelier-lit ballroom froze in stunned disbelief.

Five senior syndicate captains sat around the massive mahogany council table, flanked by their armed personal bodyguards.

At the head of the room stood Vincent Moretti, dressed in an immaculate charcoal Italian suit, his hair slicked back with expensive pomade.

Sitting on a high-backed leather chair beside him was Ethan.

The nine-year-old boy had a red mark across his left cheek, but his jaw was set with the unmistakable stubbornness of his father.

When Ethan saw Roman, his eyes widened with boundless relief.

"Dad!" Ethan cried out, attempting to leap from the chair.

A towering bodyguard in a tailored suit moved to grab Ethan’s shoulder, but Roman fired a single, thunderous round into the parquet flooring three inches from the guard's polished shoe.

The bullet tore through the wood, sending oak splinters flying across the carpet.

"Touch my son again," Roman said, his voice dropping into a terrifying whisper that carried across the vast room, "and you will not live long enough to hear your own skull hit the floor."

The bodyguard immediately threw both hands into the air and backed away against the heavy velvet curtains.

Vincent Moretti’s face twisted into a mask of frantic rage.

"Shoot him!" Vincent screamed at the council guards.

"He is a traitor to the family!"

"He brought Francis Doyle into our home!"

"He brought the police into our sanctuary!"

None of the council guards drew their weapons.

The five senior captains remained seated, their weathered faces carved from stone.

The oldest captain, a silver-haired man named Don Silvio who had served Carmine Moretti for forty years, raised a single hand.

"Lower your weapons," Silvio commanded, his voice raspy and ancient.

"No man spills blood in the grand hall while the head of the house is standing before the council."

Silvio turned his piercing dark eyes toward Roman.

"Roman," the old captain said slowly.

"Vincent claims you have conspired with state investigators."

"He claims you bombed the municipal terminal to destroy family evidence."

"And he claims this young woman you brought into the house is an operative for the attorney general."

"What do you say to these charges?"

Roman did not lower his firearm from Vincent’s face.

"I say that for thirty years, the Moretti family has been led by blind men who harbored the snake that killed my uncle Tommy."

Roman gestured with his head toward Grace.

"Play the tape, Grace."

Grace stepped forward into the center of the Persian rug, right beneath the massive crystal chandelier.

She set the portable player onto the council table directly in front of Don Silvio.

She hit the play button.

The harsh magnetic hiss filled the vast ballroom.

Then, Vincent Moretti’s recorded voice echoed through the high-vaulted ceiling with undeniable clarity:

"'The contract on Tommy Moretti is finalized, Harold... You ensure the precinct cameras are turned off for ninety minutes... Once Tommy is buried, Carmine will have no one left to run the harbor operations except me... Five million in bearer bonds will be waiting in your Cayman account the moment the death certificate is stamped.'"

The room descended into a silence so profound that the ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner sounded like hammer blows.

The five syndicate captains slowly turned their heads toward Vincent Moretti.

Don Silvio’s hands closed into trembling fists on the mahogany table.

"Tommy," Silvio whispered, his voice trembling with ancient fury.

"You murdered Carmine’s brother."

"You brought dirty police into the inner sanctum of our business."

Vincent took three frantic steps backward toward the tall French windows that opened onto the front terrace.

"It's a fake!" Vincent stammered, sweat breaking out across his forehead.

"It's an audio forgery manufactured by Doyle to divide our family!"

"Doyle was an enemy of Carmine!"

Frank Doyle stepped forward, tossing a thick manila folder onto the center of the table.

The DOJ seal gleamed beneath the chandelier.

"Read the wire transfers, Silvio," Frank said, his raspy voice cutting through the room.

"Look at the routing numbers from the Cayman bank."

"They match the private ledger accounts Carmine found missing twenty years ago."

"Vincent used Harold Kane to murder Tommy."

"And twelve years ago, when the chief witness, Laura Parker, began dying of cancer, Vincent paid Kane's private nurses to poison her IV lines to bury the paper trail."

Grace stepped up beside Frank, her eyes locked on Vincent.

"My mother died in agony because you were afraid of an old ledger," Grace said, her voice clear and piercing.

"She spent twelve years living in basements, scrubbing floors, and hiding her own daughter in the shadows because she refused to let your filth destroy an innocent child."

"She saved Roman Moretti when he was five years old."

"And she left this proof so that the world would finally see who the real cowards are."

Vincent backed against the heavy glass of the French doors.

His tailored facade cracked completely, revealing the cornered predator beneath.

Suddenly, the massive front doors of the mansion were blown off their heavy brass hinges with a deafening tactical breach explosion.

Smoke, flashbang flares, and splintered oak tore through the grand foyer.

Through the blinding smoke, Harold Kane marched into the hall, flanked by eight tactical mercenaries armed with suppressed assault rifles.

Kane held a heavy automatic pistol at his side, his tailored charcoal overcoat billowing behind him.

"Family meetings are so terribly sentimental," Kane announced, his voice dripping with condescending malice.
