Chapter 15 - Reign at Dawn

Three months later, the private dining salon B of L’Aura had been completely remodeled.
The heavy velvet curtains had been replaced with sleek, soundproof acoustic glass.
The dim, secretive lighting had been upgraded to crisp, modern architectural fixtures that illuminated the room with clean, uncompromising brilliance.
At the center of the hand-carved mahogany table sat Nora Gallagher.
She wore a bespoke charcoal-gray double-breasted suit, her hair styled in an immaculate low knot, her posture radiating absolute, unshakeable sovereignty.
Seated around her were the six remaining capos of the syndicate, alongside three senior executives from the newly restructured Castiglione-Gallagher Maritime Corporation.
At the head of the table, standing quietly behind her right shoulder with his hands clasped behind his back, was Roman Castiglione.
He no longer wore the look of an embattled warlord fighting to hold his territory together.
He looked like a king who had successfully secured his throne by sharing it with the only person in the world smart enough to conquer him.
"The quarterly logistics projections for the Meridian terminals are finalized," Nora announced, her clear, resonant voice carrying effortlessly across the silent room.
"Cargo throughput is up forty-two percent."
"Tax compliance audits have been cleared by the federal oversight committee without a single discrepancy."
"And our municipal bond yields have achieved an investment-grade rating for the first time in thirty years."
She closed the leather-bound financial portfolio with a crisp, definitive snap.
"If any man in this room believes he can manipulate another decimal point, falsify a shipping manifest, or run a secret side-deal behind my back..."
Nora paused, letting her gaze sweep slowly across the hardened faces of the syndicate capos.
"...I will personally audit your entire family tree, liquidate your assets by sunset, and leave you with nothing but the clothes on your back."
Frank Moretti cleared his throat, dipped his head in deep, genuine respect, and tapped his knuckles twice against the polished mahogany.
"Understood, Madam CFO," Moretti rumbled softly.
"The books are clean."
The meeting adjourned with quiet, disciplined efficiency.
Within three minutes, the private dining salon was empty except for Nora and Roman.
The evening sun was beginning to set over the harbor, casting a brilliant, golden-orange glow through the panoramic windows across the glittering skyscrapers of the financial district.
Nora stood up from her chair, walked to the window, and stared out at the sprawling expanse of the city she had once feared, and now commanded.
Roman walked up behind her, stopping just inches away, his familiar scent of cedarwood, rain, and quiet authority wrapping around her like a shield.
"You missed your shift at the front tables downstairs," Roman murmured, a warm, genuine smile breaking across his face.
"I gave my apron away permanently, Mr. Castiglione," Nora replied, leaning back slightly against his shoulder.
"Good," Roman whispered, his hand sliding down to interlock his fingers securely with hers.
"Because I happen to know the owner, and she pays her new executive staff a hell of a lot better than L'Aura ever did."
Nora turned her head, looked up into his pale slate-gray eyes, and smiled.

For the first time in five years, the ghost of Huntsman Hall was finally at peace.
And the city outside their window belonged to them.
