Chapter 4 - The Slap Heard Around the Room

Elise sprinted across the polished floor, dodging a waiter and slipping past the startled guests. Her eyes were locked on the heavy wooden table holding the cake.

She struck the side of the table with both hands and the full force of her small body.

The heavy table was on hidden casters. It rolled violently under the sudden impact, smashing hard into a lavish stand of wrapped gifts. The three-tiered cake lurched, the delicate spun sugar shattering. The cake slid off the edge and collapsed in a spectacular, messy ruin across the pristine white tablecloth and the expensive carpet.

The guests gasped in unison. Several women shrieked.

Before Amelia could even process that her birthday cake had just been destroyed, Elise grabbed her roughly around the waist. Using her momentum, Elise pulled the billionaire's daughter backward.

They fell together in a tangle of limbs, tumbling onto the thick carpet several feet away from the place where Amelia had been standing just a second before.

For one suspended, agonizing second, nothing else happened.

The room was frozen in a tableau of disaster. Elise and Amelia were on the floor. The cake was ruined.

And the chandelier remained suspended above them.

The gap in the ceiling was hidden by the glare of the lights to anyone looking from the floor. To the naked eye, Elise Navarro had just lost her mind and maliciously destroyed the centerpiece of the party.

Vivienne Hawthorne stared at the ruined cake, the crushed imported flowers, and the champagne glasses that were now rolling across the floor, spilling expensive wine into the rug.

Her face changed from shock, to indignity, and finally, to blind, unadulterated fury.

“What have you done?” Vivienne’s voice was a terrifying hiss that carried through the silent room.

Elise pushed herself up to her knees, her breath coming in ragged gasps. She pointed upward. “It’s falling. The ceiling is—”

Vivienne didn't look up. She crossed the short distance between them in two furious strides. Her mind saw only a disobedient servant's child who had ruined months of planning, humiliated her in front of her peers, and ruined her daughter's perfect moment.

“You destroyed her birthday!” Vivienne screamed.

She raised her hand and struck Elise across the cheek.

The slap was brief, but the sharp crack of skin against skin echoed in the cavernous ballroom. The room, already quiet, went utterly dead silent around it.

By the kitchen doors, Rosa dropped the heavy silver tray she was holding. Silver spoons and crystal glasses shattered across the floor in a chaotic clatter.

Elise staggered half a step backward from the force of the blow. Her cheek immediately flared crimson, burning with pain. But she didn't cry. She didn't look at Vivienne.

Her eyes lifted back to the ceiling.

The slap had distracted them, but the physics of the failing metal had not stopped.

The chandelier was visibly lower now. One of its heavy iron support links had stretched open, warped by the immense weight it could no longer bear.

Vivienne turned her back on Elise, breathing hard, facing her stunned guests as if she could still repair the party by simply ordering everyone back into place. She opened her mouth to apologize for the "disruption."

Elise saw the final link bending. It was snapping. Now.

She did not pause to defend herself. She did not rub her burning cheek.

Elise lunged forward and seized Vivienne’s wrist with both hands.

“Move!” Elise screamed.
