Chapter 14 - The Viper In The Nursery

The lockdown of the estate reached unprecedented levels over the next twenty-four hours.

Auxiliary generators hummed beneath the lawn, security patrols doubled, and every electronic device entering the compound was swept for bugs by external specialists.

With the family’s primary bank accounts frozen by federal prosecutors, the remaining captains were getting restless.

Money was the oxygen of the syndicate; without cash flow to pay off local precincts and distribution crews, loyalty would quickly dissolve into chaos.

I spent the afternoon upstairs, sitting beside Mia while she drew pictures with colored wax crayons on the playroom table.

She drew a tall man with a dark beard holding a tiny stick figure with sunglasses, and beside them, a large brown blob labeled ‘Barnaby’.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

It wasn't Marco or Luca.

Elena, the senior head housekeeper who had managed the estate staff for over twenty years, pushed the door open carrying a basket of fresh laundry.

Elena was an older woman with silver hair pulled into a tight bun, always quiet, always respectful, who had treated me kindly when I first arrived as a junior maid.

“Good afternoon, Miss Anna,” Elena said with a polite bow of her head.

“I brought the fresh linens for the little one’s bed.”

“Thank you, Elena,” I replied with a warm smile, stepping forward to take the basket.

“You don't need to carry those heavy loads up the stairs yourself. I can help.”

“You are not a maid here anymore, child,” Elena murmured, setting the basket down on the vanity.

“You are the lady of this house now. Times change quickly.”

She turned toward the table, looking down at Mia’s drawings with a wistful expression.

“She is a precious angel,” Elena whispered.

“Just like Luca was when his mother brought him through these halls thirty years ago.”

Mia looked up, smiling brightly at the older woman.

“Miss Elena, look! I drew Barnaby’s new coat!”

Elena smiled, reaching down into the pocket of her starched apron to pull out a small piece of wrapped hard candy.

“A brave little girl deserves a strawberry drop,” Elena said gently, extending the sweet toward Mia.

Mia reached out to take it, but as she did, Elena’s sleeve rode back slightly over her wrist.

I caught a brief glimpse of something inked into the pale skin of her inner forearm—a faint, faded blue tattoo of a hawk perched upon an anchor.

My entire world stopped spinning.

Julian’s family mark.

Not a corporate emblem, but the blood crest of the old Mela clan from Sicily.

“Mia, don't eat that!” I screamed, lunging forward with all the speed my body possessed.

I slapped the candy directly out of Mia’s tiny hand, sending the wrapped sweet skittering across the floorboards.

Elena’s warm, maternal expression vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, venomous glare that chilled my blood to ice.

“You always were too sharp for a simple girl from Illinois,” Elena hissed, her voice dropping into a raspy, venomous sneer.

Before I could scream for the guards outside the door, Elena whipped a small ceramic vial from her apron pocket and threw the clear liquid directly toward my face.

I threw my arm up, the acidic substance splashing across the fabric of my sweater, smoking and burning through the wool.

Mia shrieked in terror, scrambling back into the corner of the room behind the heavy oak play table.

Elena didn't pull a gun; she pulled a four-inch surgical blade concealed inside the bone handle of a laundry brush.

“Julian was my nephew!” Elena snarled, lunging forward with terrifying agility for a woman her age.

“His father gave thirty years to this family, and Luca threw Julian into the ocean like garbage! If the Mela name dies, the Valente line dies with it!”

I didn't think.

I didn't run.

I grabbed the heavy wooden child's chair from the table and hurled it directly into Elena’s chest with all the maternal fury burning inside me.

The heavy chair cracked against her ribs, knocking the older woman off balance and sending the surgical knife skittering beneath the bed.

“GUARDS!” I roared at the top of my lungs, tackling the woman to the floorboards, pinning her arms with my knees as she clawed at my eyes.

The heavy oak doors of the nursery burst open with a splintering crash.

Luca strode into the room, his gun drawn, followed by three armed guards.

Seeing the smoke rising from my sweater and Elena pinned beneath me, Luca’s eyes flared with a primal, terrifying rage.

“Get Anna and Mia out of this room,” Luca ordered between clenched teeth, his voice so deep it vibrated the glass in the windows.

Two guards lifted me up, while Marco scooped Mia into his arms, shielding her face as she sobbed hysterically.

Elena lay on the floor, laughing through cracked, bleeding lips, staring up at Luca with unhinged defiance.

“You’re too late, Luca!” Elena spat, her teeth stained with red.

“The binder Vance has contains forty years of your father’s ledgers! The Mela family built this empire, and we just handed the keys to the United States Department of Justice!”

Luca lowered the barrel of his weapon, his expression turning to stone.

“You didn't build this empire, Elena,” Luca whispered.

May you like

“You just cleaned the blood off the floor.”

A single suppressed shot ended the traitor’s laughter forever.
