Chapter 13 - The Boardroom Bloodbath

The boardroom of Moretti Global was situated behind double-reinforced frosted glass doors at the eastern apex of the sixtieth floor.

The room was dominated by a forty-foot oval conference table carved from a single slab of polished Brazilian walnut.

Around the table sat twenty-four board members, representing the most powerful financial institutions and maritime conglomerates in the Western Hemisphere.

At the far end of the table sat Arthur Hayes, Senior Vice Chairman.

Hayes was seventy-one years old, with thinning silver hair, a patrician nose, and a tailored double-breasted Savile Row suit.

He sat with his fingers steepled beneath his chin, projecting the calm, serene confidence of an executioner awaiting his victim.

Beside him sat Richard Whitman and Victor Rossi, whispering quietly while reviewing the printed resolution to depose Luca Moretti.

At precisely 1:59 PM, Hayes cleared his throat and tapped his silver fountain pen against the crystal water glass.

“Ladies and gentlemen of the board, please take your seats,” Hayes announced, his aristocratic voice smooth and measured.

“We are faced with an unprecedented crisis of corporate leadership.”

“The grotesque criminal scandal involving Mr. Moretti’s former fiancée and his disgraced best man has inflicted catastrophic damage upon our global brand.”

“Our market capitalization has declined by nearly ten billion dollars in twenty-four hours.”

“Under Section 9 of our governing charter, we must act decisively to protect shareholder equity before the market opens in Tokyo tomorrow morning.”

Hayes looked around the table, nodding gravely to the allied directors.

“I move that we immediately suspend Luca Moretti as Chief Executive Officer and designate an emergency corporate conservator to assume operational control.”

“Do I have a second?” Whitman asked immediately, raising his hand.

“I second the motion,” Rossi chimed in without hesitation.

“The motion is seconded,” Hayes said, a faint, predatory smirk touching his thin lips.

“We shall proceed to a roll-call vote on the resolution to—”

The heavy frosted glass doors at the back of the boardroom swung open with an explosive, concussive crash.

Every single director at the forty-foot table jumped in their seats.

Luca Moretti walked into the boardroom.

He did not look like a man facing corporate execution.

He strode down the center of the room with an aura of absolute, terrifying invincibility, radiating raw power with every step.

Walking at his immediate right, matching him stride for stride, was me.

I had removed my overcoat.

I wore an immaculate ivory silk blouse beneath a tailored charcoal vest, my white fiberglass cast resting prominently against my waist.

In my good right hand, I carried three heavy, bound volumes embossed with gold lettering.

Behind us walked Caleb, carrying our father’s vintage leather briefcase, flanked by Elena Vance and six armed federal marshals in full tactical dress.

Arthur Hayes went completely rigid in his leather high-backed chair.

His silver fountain pen slipped from his fingers, rolling across the polished walnut table before dropping onto the carpet.

The twenty-one other board members gasped in collective shock, murmuring in frantic, confused whispers.

“Luca!” Hayes stammered, recovering his aristocratic composure with visible difficulty.

“This is an executive session of the Board of Directors!”

“Unauthorized domestic staff and outside civilians are strictly barred from this chamber under corporate bylaws!”

Luca stopped at the head of the table, towering directly over the Senior Vice Chairman.

He did not sit down.

He leaned forward, placing his knuckles heavily against the wood, his hazel eyes locking onto Hayes like laser sights.

“You are quite right, Arthur,” Luca said, his voice silky smooth and vibrating with lethal menace.

“Unauthorized personnel are strictly forbidden.”

“That is precisely why the federal marshals are here to escort you, Richard, and Victor out of my building in handcuffs.”

Whitman slammed his fists onto the table, his red face contorted with outrage.

“This is outrageous! You cannot intimidate this board with private security theatrics, Luca!”

“You are the one facing federal scrutiny!”

“Your best man tried to assassinate you!”

“My best man didn't act alone, Richard,” Luca replied softly.

Luca turned his head toward me, offering a single, decisive nod.

“Claire, distribute the executive briefing.”

I stepped forward to the center of the table.

With my right hand, I slammed the first heavy bound volume directly in front of Arthur Hayes.

The loud, echoing thud resonated through the vast room like a gunshot.

The title on the cover read in bold, black embossed font:

AEGIS HOLDINGS: FORENSIC AUDIT OF SYSTEMIC REBATE DIVERSION & CORPORATE TREASON (2018–2026).

I slid the second and third volumes in front of Whitman and Rossi.

Their eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated horror as they recognized the corporate name they had kept buried for eight years.

“Seven years ago,” I began, my voice ringing clear, cold, and unwavering through the cavernous boardroom, “an internal auditor named Thomas Dawson discovered that forty million dollars was being diverted annually from Moretti shipping lanes into an offshore shell company in the Cook Islands.”

“Thomas Dawson refused a three-million-dollar bribe to alter his audit report.”

“Two weeks later, eighty thousand dollars in marked bills was planted in his office by Julian Vance, acting on direct orders from Arthur Hayes.”

Hayes’s chest heaved beneath his bespoke suit.

“Lies! Slander from a disgruntled former housemaid!”

“Shut your mouth, Arthur,” Luca whispered, and the quiet fury in his voice instantly silenced the entire room.

I opened the first volume directly to page eighteen, pointing my finger at the high-resolution photographic evidence.

“These are the un-redacted banking records recovered from Thomas Dawson’s encrypted drive this morning,” I continued, looking directly into the pale faces of the twenty-one uncorrupted board members.

“They detail eighty-four separate wire transfers from Aegis Holdings directly into private bank accounts in the Cayman Islands held by Arthur Hayes, Richard Whitman, and Victor Rossi.”

“The total embezzled sum over the last eight years exceeds three hundred and forty million dollars.”

Elena Vance stepped up to the podium at the front of the room, plugging her laptop into the main projection console.

The massive sixty-five-inch monitors mounted on the boardroom walls lit up instantly with decrypted wire transfer receipts, encrypted email threads, and signed corporate agreements.

“Furthermore,” Elena announced, her voice filled with cold professional disdain, “we have recovered Julian Vance’s encrypted personal communications from Friday afternoon.”

“Julian confirmed in writing to Heinrich Keller that upon Luca Moretti’s death, Arthur Hayes would immediately assume the position of Corporate Conservator.”

“Hayes was scheduled to sign the fraudulent Bellini debt absorption agreement on Monday morning at 9:00 AM.”

“In exchange, Hayes, Whitman, and Rossi were to receive an eight percent equity stake in Bellini Maritime Holding.”

The boardroom erupted into chaos.

Several directors stood up from their chairs, shouting in righteous fury at the three traitors at the end of the table.

“You corrupt bastards!” one elderly shipping magnate roared, shaking his fist at Hayes.

“You tried to liquidate this company from the inside!”

Hayes looked around the room, searching desperately for an ally, but every face was turned against him in disgust and contempt.

His aristocratic facade completely dissolved, leaving behind a pathetic, cornered thief.

Whitman buried his face in his hands, trembling violently.

Victor Rossi slumped back in his chair, staring blankly at the ceiling in complete defeat.

Special Agent Miller stepped into the boardroom from the anteroom, followed by four armed marshals carrying steel handcuffs.

Miller walked straight up to Arthur Hayes, pulling a thick stack of federal arrest warrants from his coat.

“Arthur Hayes, Richard Whitman, Victor Rossi,” Miller announced, his voice carrying the full weight of federal law.

“You are under arrest for federal conspiracy, wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and accessory to attempted capital murder.”

The marshals pulled Hayes out of his leather chair, forcing his arms behind his back.

The cold steel handcuffs clicked around his manicured wrists with a sharp, definitive snap.

Hayes glared at me, his eyes burning with venomous, impotent rage as he was marched toward the double doors.

“Your father died in a cage, girl!” Hayes hissed through his teeth.

“And you’re still nothing but a servant!”

Luca took a single step, intercepting Hayes in the center of the room.

Luca stood so close that Hayes was forced to crane his neck upward, trembling under the sheer physical presence of the man he had tried to destroy.

“Claire Dawson owns your freedom now, Arthur,” Luca said, his voice cold as a winter tomb.

“She uncovered what you stole.”

“She saved the company you tried to burn.”

“And while you spend the rest of your miserable life rotting in a federal penitentiary in Terre Haute, she will be sitting at the head of this table.”

Luca turned toward the marshals.

“Get this garbage out of my sight.”

The marshals dragged Hayes, Whitman, and Rossi out of the boardroom, their frantic protests fading down the carpeted hallway.

Luca turned back to face the remaining twenty-one board members.

The room was completely silent, every eye fixed upon the master of Moretti Global.

“The motion to appoint a conservator is permanently dead,” Luca announced.

“Does anyone else wish to challenge my authority over this corporation?”

Not a single hand was raised.

Every director nodded in profound, absolute submission.

Luca turned toward me, his hazel eyes softening with unmistakable pride and deep affection.

“Ladies and gentlemen of the board,” Luca said, his voice echoing with absolute finality.
