Chapter 3 - A Ballroom Built on Lies

The heavy double doors of the Grand Ballroom flew open with a deafening bang that silenced the string quartet for the second time that night.
Luca strode into the glittering room like an executioner entering a royal court.
I hurried three paces behind him, my uniform torn, my arm dripping blood onto the white carpet runner.
The elite of Chicago—senators, real estate moguls, high court judges, and shipping tycoons—froze in place with champagne glasses raised to their lips.
At the center of the raised mahogany stage stood Vanessa Bellini.
She had taken the microphone from the master of ceremonies.
Her posture was flawless, her diamond necklace catching every angle of the spotlight.
Beside her stood an older man with slicked silver hair, tailored in a midnight-blue tuxedo, holding a leather portfolio.
It was her father, Julian Bellini, the notorious hedge fund patriarch whose investments had been hemorrhaging capital for eighteen months.
“My dear friends,” Vanessa was announcing into the microphone, her voice a masterclass in theatrical emotion.
“As you know, my beloved Luca’s mother has been battling progressive dementia for many months.”
“Tonight, with heavy hearts, Luca and I have finalized arrangements for her transfer to the premier neurological retreat in Switzerland.”
“Her comfort and dignity must come before our own personal celebration.”
A murmur of polite, sympathetic applause rippled through the gullible crowd.
Julian Bellini smiled warmly, nodding toward the gathered journalists.
“Cut the microphone,” Luca said.
His voice was not loud, but it cut through the room like a razor blade through silk.
The audio technician at the soundboard immediately yanked the master fader down.
Vanessa’s microphone died with a low thud.
Her smile froze, then cracked around the edges as she saw Luca marching down the center aisle toward the stage.
Then she saw me.
She saw my bloodied arm.
She saw that I was still standing, still breathing, and standing directly behind the most dangerous man in the room.
A flicker of genuine terror flashed across her polished face before she quickly masked it with indignation.
“Luca, darling, what is the meaning of this?”
She stepped down from the stage, her voice dropping into a desperate whisper as she reached his side.
“You are making a public spectacle in front of the Governor and the entire press corps!”
“What happened to Eleanor’s transfer?”
Luca stopped inches away from her.
The sheer physical aura of his rage made Vanessa take a step backward.
“Where is my mother, Julian?” Luca asked, looking past Vanessa straight at her father.
Julian Bellini chuckled dryly, adjusting the silk lapels of his tuxedo.
“My dear boy, she is safely in the private medical transit vehicle heading toward O’Hare International.”
“Vanessa organized everything with the top neurological specialists in Zurich.”
“She did it as a surprise to take the burden off your shoulders before your wedding.”
“You should be thanking my daughter, not humiliating her in front of our investors.”
“My mother isn't in that van,” Luca said quietly.
Julian’s smile tightened.
“Don't be ridiculous, Luca, Marcus confirmed the transit team at the gate—”
“The woman inside that vehicle at my perimeter gate is not Eleanor Moretti,” Luca interrupted, his voice ringing across the vast ceiling.
“Marcus breached the rear doors forty seconds ago under my direct order.”
The entire ballroom gasped.
Vanessa’s face went paper-white.
“He found a paid transient woman wearing my mother’s winter coat,” Luca continued, step by deliberate step cornering the Bellinis against the stage.
“She had a pre-recorded speaker taped inside the collar of that coat.”
“A speaker transmitting my mother’s voice from an encrypted transmitter.”
“A decoy.”
The room erupted into shocked whispers.
High-society matrons covered their mouths in horror.
Julian Bellini’s arrogant expression melted into a mask of pure panic.
“Luca, that’s impossible!” Vanessa stammered, her voice shaking violently.
“The medical agency must have made a catastrophic mistake!”
“I only wanted to help your mother!”
“You wanted her gone,” I spoke up.
The words tore out of my throat before I could stop them.
Every eye in the ballroom turned toward me.
Vanessa’s gaze locked onto me with pure, murderous hatred.
“Quiet, you wretched girl!” Vanessa snarled, dropping all pretense of elegance.
“You are a thieving maid whose employment will be terminated tonight!”
“Luca, she stole Eleanor’s jewelry box an hour ago!”
“I caught her rummaging through your mother’s private safe!”
“That’s why her arm is bleeding—she broke into the locked glass display case!”
I stepped forward, pulling back the shredded fabric of my sleeve so every guest, every camera, and every investor could see.
“These aren't cuts from a jewelry box, Miss Bellini.”
“These are deep lacerations from the sedatives your private thugs tried to inject into Mrs. Moretti.”
“You paid them to drug her so she wouldn't speak to Luca before the engagement contracts were signed.”
“You didn't want him to know what Mrs. Moretti found in the library safe.”
Julian Bellini stepped forward, his eyes bulging with rage.
“Who allows a common servant to speak to my family like this?”
“Security, throw this liar out into the street!”
Not a single security guard moved.
Every guard in the room wore the Moretti family crest on their lapel.
And every guard answered to Marcus, who was now standing at the ballroom doors with eight armed men in tactical gear.
Luca didn't look at the crowd.
He reached inside his suit jacket and pulled out a folded slip of heavy parchment.
“This is the medical power of attorney document my assistant found on Vanessa’s vanity ten minutes ago,” Luca said, his voice deadly calm.
“It transfers full conservatorship of the Moretti estate and forty-nine percent of our maritime voting shares to Julian Bellini upon our marriage.”
“And the signature at the bottom isn't mine.”
Luca held the document up to the chandelier light.
“It’s a forged duplicate of my late father’s private notary seal.”
“A seal that disappeared from this house twelve years ago.”
Vanessa stumbled back against the grand piano, her chest heaving.
“Luca... please... let me explain...”
“You will explain to the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” Luca said coldly.
“Marcus, detain Julian Bellini and Vanessa Bellini in the library.”
“Take their phones, their passports, and search their private suites.”
“If either of them takes a step toward the perimeter, treat them as hostile intruders.”
“Luca, you can't do this to me!” Vanessa shrieked as two burly security officers stepped onto the stage and gripped her bare arms.
“I am your fiancée! I love you!”
“You don't even know who that maid is!”
“You have no idea what she’s here to do!”
Luca didn't even flinch.
He turned his back on her as the guards dragged her off the stage, her screaming voice echoing down the corridor.
Then he turned to me.
His stern face softened by a fraction of an inch, his hand gently touching my uninjured shoulder.
“Dr. Hayes is in my private study, Sophie.”
May you like
“You are going to let him fix that arm right now.”
“And then you are going to tell me everything my mother told you.”
