Chapter 14 - The Heir's True Name

Salvatore Vance stopped twenty paces from where Adrian knelt with his son on the wet asphalt.

The perimeter around the pier was completely sealed by thirty heavily armed private contractors.

Above them on the Northern Star, the crew remained pinned down behind the steel bulwarks by sniper laser sights dancing across the bridge windows.

Ava moved closer to Adrian, stepping slightly in front of Ethan.

Adrian pushed himself up from the ground with agonizing effort, using an iron mooring bollard to support his battered frame.

He placed his large, scarred hand firmly onto Ethan’s shoulder.

"You are out of your territory, Vance," Adrian rasped, wiping blood from his swollen eye.

"This city is not your playground."

"This city no longer belongs to anyone, Adrian," Vance replied with a calm, patronizing smile.

"Your empire died tonight in the ashes of your mansion and your foundry."

"Your cousin is dead at your feet."

"Your grandfather is rotting under sixty feet of iron."

"You are a ghost standing on borrowed time."

Vance gestured to one of the men in business suits beside him.

The lawyer opened the leather briefcase, revealing thick sheaves of legal parchment bearing red wax seals and embossed gold stamps.

"Do you know why I spent twenty million dollars hunting this child tonight, Adrian?" Vance asked, tilting his head.

"Because you want revenge for the Moretti family," Adrian spat coldly.

Vance laughed, a dry, elegant sound that carried over the howling storm.

"Revenge is an emotional indulgence for peasants," Vance sneered.

"This is about four point two billion dollars in European maritime trusts."

"Under the original charter of the Moretti Foundation, the entire corporate estate reverts to the public trust if no direct blood descendant claims the lineage before his ninth birthday."

"Ethan turns nine years old next Tuesday."

"If he is not presented before the high court in Zurich with verified genetic proof, the Moretti billions vanish into the Swiss treasury."

Ava felt a wave of profound disgust wash over her soul.

The assault on the mansion, the slaughter of Marcus and the guards, the burning of the estate—none of it was about reclaiming a beloved child.

Ethan was nothing more than an organic legal key to unlock a multi-billion-dollar corporate trust for corrupt oligarchs.

"You don't want a grandson," Ava called out, her voice sharp with blistering rage.

"You want a puppet with a signature."

Vance looked at Ava with cold, dismissive contempt.

"I did not ask the maid for her opinion," Vance said smoothly.

"However, the facts remain absolute."

"The boy’s name is Julian Moretti."

"His genetic profile matches the late Sofia Moretti to the ninety-ninth percentile."

"By international law, he is the sole property of our corporate board."

Vance turned his gaze back to Adrian.

"I will make you a generous offer, Russo," Vance said, opening his hands in a gesture of false magnanimity.

"Walk up the gangway of that freighter."

"Take your maid with you."

"Sail to Lisbon and spend the rest of your miserable life in obscurity."

"Leave the boy on this pier."

"If you refuse, my men will execute you and the woman where you stand, and I will take the child anyway."

"What is your answer, mafia boss?"

Adrian did not hesitate for a microsecond.

He drew a concealed snub-nosed revolver from his inner ankle holster and leveled it directly at Vance's forehead.

"My answer is that you will have to step over my corpse to touch him," Adrian roared with ferocious defiance.

Before the mercenaries could open fire, a small figure stepped forward into the blinding glare of the vehicle headlights.

Ethan walked out from behind his father's protective shadow.

The eight-year-old child stood in the center of the wet asphalt, his head held high, his pale face illuminated by the harsh white beams.

The wind whipped his wet hair across his forehead, but his dark eyes were completely steady.

"Ethan, get back!" Adrian shouted, lunging to grab him.

"No, Dad," Ethan said, his voice ringing across the silent pier with shocking, absolute clarity.

Vance’s mercenaries hesitated, lowering their rifle muzzles slightly so as not to harm the multi-billion-dollar heir.

Vance smiled warmly and took a step toward the child, extending his black-leather-gloved hand.

"Come here, Julian," Vance cooed with practiced deceit.

"Come to your real people."

"You will live in palaces."

"You will never have to run in the dark again."

Ethan looked at the outstretched hand, and then he looked directly into Vance's cold, calculating eyes.

"My name is not Julian Moretti," Ethan said, each word deliberate, sharp, and fearless.

Vance's smile froze on his face.

"Excuse me?" Vance asked softly.

"My name is Ethan Russo," the boy declared, his voice echoing against the steel hull of the Northern Star.

"My grandfather Vincent was a sinner who stole me."

"And my father Adrian is a criminal who broke the law."

"But when the bad men came into our house, my father didn't send an army to hide behind."

"He came into the fire to bleed for me."

"He held me when I was sick."

"He taught me how to be a man."

Ethan reached into his pocket and pulled out the Swiss legal birth certificate Julian had carried to verify his identity.

The boy tore the ancient parchment in half, letting the wet scraps fall into the filthy gutter at Vance's feet.

"I don't want your money," Ethan spat with pure, righteous disgust.

"And I will never be your prince."

"I am Adrian Russo's son, and you can go to hell."

Vance’s face twisted into an expression of unhinged, murderous fury.

The aristocratic mask cracked entirely, revealing the rabid monster beneath.

"Kill the father," Vance screamed to his mercenaries.

"Take the boy by force!"

"Now, Ava!" Adrian shouted.

Ava did not freeze.

She had already reached into the emergency marine kit from the skiff resting beside her boot.

She ripped the safety pin from a magnesium marine distress flare and slammed the base against the concrete.

A blinding, two-thousand-degree sphere of crimson fire exploded into the night.

Ava hurled the burning flare directly into the windshield of Vance's primary command vehicle.

The chemical fire blinded the night-vision optics of the mercenaries in an instant, plunging the entire front line into shrieking confusion.

At that exact moment, the heavy horn of the Northern Star blasted across the harbor with deafening force.

From the high steel catwalks of the cargo ship, Captain Morales and six armed mariners opened fire with heavy shotguns and hunting rifles.

The pier descended into a maelstrom of gunfire, smoke, and righteous fury.
