Chapter 9 - The Siege of the East Wing

The heavy crystal chandeliers in the hallway flickered twice and died, plunging the vast estate into pitch-black darkness.

A second later, the estate’s secondary emergency generators kicked in with a low, vibrating hum that traveled through the floorboards.

Dim, blood-red emergency runner lights illuminated the baseboards along the gallery corridor.

"Vance," Olivia said instantly, racking the slide of her confiscated semi-automatic weapon.

"Walsh didn't check in on his scheduled ten-minute frequency."

"Vance has initiated the scorched-earth protocol."

Walsh smiled through the blood covering his teeth, leaning against the doorframe.

"The Director doesn't leave loose ends, children," he murmured with grim satisfaction.

"A federal warrant was signed two hours ago alleging that this estate is harboring an armed hostile cell."

"When the tactical team finishes sweeping this wing, there won't be a single living witness left to testify about what’s inside that cabinet."

Adrian didn't waste a second.

He raised the butt of his heavy pistol and slammed it into Walsh’s temple, knocking the corrupt captain completely unconscious onto the floorboards.

"Tie him to the bed frame with the restraint straps," Adrian ordered Dr. Henderson, who was still trembling in the corner.

"If you try to run, Henderson, I will personally throw you into the courtyard without a weapon."

The doctor frantically nodded, grabbing the heavy nylon restraints from the emergency crash cart and securing Walsh’s wrists to the steel hospital bed.

Adrian walked to the private security intercom beside the entrance, punched in a master override code, and brought the estate’s tactical channel online.

"Attention all Russo security personnel," Adrian’s baritone boomed through the compound’s internal communication grid.

"This is Adrian Russo."

"Our perimeter has been breached by private contractors operating under unauthorized federal cover."

"They are here to execute my grandfather and liquidate the household."

"All loyal personnel report to the east courtyard and engage with lethal force."

"Defend the house."

A chorus of acknowledging transmissions crackled over the radio, the voices of seasoned, battle-hardened men who had served the Russo family for decades.

Outside, the first sharp, echoing crack of high-caliber rifle fire shattered the night air, followed by the shattering of safety glass in the lower conservatory.

"They’re using suppressed carbines," Olivia said, her tactical training taking over completely.

"They will clear the ground floor in two-man bounding teams before moving up the central stairwell."

"How many men do you have in the main house, Adrian?"

"Sixteen loyal soldiers," Adrian answered, pulling a heavy tactical shotgun from a concealed alcove behind a full-length mirror.

"Eight on the ground floor, four on the roof, and four stationed in the security annex."

"The security annex is already compromised," Olivia warned, her mind running through the spatial layout of the mansion.

"Victor was Walsh’s man, which means the annex operators are likely on Vance’s payroll."

"We cannot defend this bedroom."

"The double doors are heavy wood; a single thermite breach charge will take them down in four seconds."

"Where do we move my grandfather?" Adrian asked, looking toward the old man who was now sitting fully upright on the edge of the mattress, his breath steady despite the chaos.

Anthony reached out, his hand pointing toward the decorative fireplace on the northern wall of the suite.

"The service flue behind the hearth," the old patriarch commanded, his voice surprisingly firm.

"It leads down to the original nineteen-twenties coal cellar beneath the east terrace."

"The cellar connects to the maintenance culvert under the river highway."

Adrian looked at his grandfather in surprise.

"I didn't know that passage still existed."

"I built it during the liquor wars, boy," Anthony said with a grim smirk.

"I wasn't about to tell the modern architects where I hid my escape routes."

Heavy, coordinated footsteps approached rapidly along the marble corridor outside.

Olivia stepped to the side of the doorframe, her weapon held in a low-ready position.

Through the narrow gap beneath the door, she saw the distinct, amber reflections of tactical flashlight beams sweeping across the carpet.

"Breach charge incoming!" she hissed, grabbing Adrian’s shoulder and pulling him toward the fireplace.

"Get down!"

A deafening, concussive boom tore through the double doors as a shaped breaching strip detonated, blowing the heavy mahogany panels inward in a hail of splintered timber and smoking metal.

A flashbang grenade rolled across the hardwood floor, detonating with a blinding white light and an ear-splitting crack that shook the plaster from the ceiling.

Through the rolling smoke, two tactical operators clad in black combat uniforms and ballistic helmets stepped across the threshold, their carbine barrels raised to clear the room.

Olivia didn't hesitate.

She leaned out from behind the heavy stone hearth, lining up her sights through the grey haze, and fired three rapid, controlled shots.

The first round struck the lead operator’s shoulder plate, spinning him off-balance; the second round pierced his unarmored collarbone, dropping him instantly to the floor.

The second operator swung his carbine toward her, but Adrian stepped into the clearing, leveling his tactical shotgun with a single, sweeping motion.

The twelve-gauge roared with the sound of tearing metal, the heavy buckshot load catching the second intruder square in the chest plate, throwing his body back out into the gallery hallway.

"Move!" Adrian roared, turning toward the fireplace.

He gripped the cast-iron grate, hauled it upward with his bare hands, and revealed the dark, narrow opening of the historical brick shaft.

Anthony did not ask for assistance; with a surge of adrenaline that defied his eighty-two years, the old mafia boss swung his legs over the bed and stepped onto his own feet.

"Take the ledger, Olivia," Anthony commanded, his hand resting on her shoulder.

"If that book burns, your father died for nothing."

Olivia grabbed the Manila envelope containing the Vance authorization directives, tucked her father’s gold shield securely into the tactical pouch of her apron, and jammed the cloth-bound ledger into a heavy canvas laundry bag.

She slung the bag across her chest, pulled Dr. Henderson toward the opening, and shoved him down into the shaft.

"Go, Henderson! Guide him down!" she snapped.

Adrian helped his grandfather into the opening, supporting the old man’s weight as they began the descent into the stone darkness below.

Behind them, Captain Henry Walsh groaned on the bed, struggling against the nylon restraints as the smoke from the breach filled the room.

"Adrian!" Walsh screamed through his broken teeth, panic finally breaking his composure.

"Don't leave me here! They don't know who I am! They will kill everyone in this room!"

Adrian turned back for a single, frozen second, his dark eyes looking at the man who had ordered his father’s murder.

"Live with your choices, Henry," Adrian said coldly.

He turned, stepped into the hearth, and pulled the cast-iron grate shut behind them, leaving Walsh screaming in the dark as more tactical boots echoed down the burning corridor.
