Chapter 13 - The Shattered Bloodline

The dry dock fell into an agonizing, breathless silence, broken only by the dripping of rainwater from the rusted girders high above.

Mateo stood frozen on the iron catwalk, his knuckles whitening as he gripped the railing, his face draining of all color.

The corporate security guards he had brought with him began glancing uneasily at the six heavily armed mercenaries standing behind Julian Vance.

It was clear to everyone in the hangar that Mateo’s men were paid hourly to look intimidating, while Vance’s operatives were trained to kill without hesitation.

Luca stepped into the center of the concrete platform, directly beneath the hanging chain hoist where Leo hung suspended.

"Vance," Luca said, his voice steady as iron.

"Before you open that box, you need to understand who you are dealing with."

"I know who I am dealing with," Vance replied coldly, his gaze never leaving the copper chest.

"I am dealing with the bloodline of the monster who murdered my father in cold blood."

"Vincent ordered the purge," Luca admitted, his voice ringing with brutal honesty that made the old patriarch in the wheelchair bow his head in shame.

"He lied to me my entire life about how our empire was founded."

"He stole your father's share, and for forty years he lived on stolen blood."

Vincent let out a ragged, trembling sigh, his withered hands gripping the armrests of the wheelchair.

"Julian..." Vincent whispered, tears of ancient guilt finally cutting tracks through the grime on his weathered face.

"I did it."

"I gave the order at the dry dock."

"Take my life."

"Put a bullet in my head right now, end the debt, and let these children go."

Julian Vance’s jaw hardened, his pale eyes flashing with four decades of suppressed rage.

"A bullet in your head is too merciful, Vincent," Vance hissed.

"You lived eighty years in silk and luxury while I was hunted across three continents like a stray dog."

"You will watch your empire dissolved into dust before I allow you to die."

"Wait!" Mateo’s voice cracked from the catwalk, high-pitched and hysterical.

"Shoot them, Vance!"

"Kill the old man, kill Luca, and let's divide the shipping charters as we agreed!"

Luca slowly reached into his inner pocket, not pulling a weapon, but drawing out the high-resolution laminated photograph of the 1984 ledger page.

"Vance, ask Mateo why he was so eager to retrieve this strongbox before you could read it," Luca said, his voice cutting through Mateo’s shrieking like a scalpel.

Julian Vance paused, his eyes narrowing with razor-sharp suspicion.

"What are you holding, Luca?"

"This is the personal payoff ledger Vincent kept in nineteen eighty-four," Luca explained, holding the document high so the overhead halogen lights illuminated the text.

"Vincent authorized the hit."

"He paid off the harbor police and the district attorney."

"Mateo told you he was innocent of the blood."

"He told you his branch of the family had clean hands."

Luca pointed a straight, accusatory finger directly at Mateo on the catwalk.

"On October fourteenth, nineteen eighty-four, at eleven-thirty at night, who walked into the southern warehouse and disabled the private security grid so your father couldn't escape?"

"Who took two hundred and fifty thousand dollars in unmarked bearer bonds to betray your family from the inside?"

Vance’s face darkened, a terrifying, volcanic fury tightening the muscles of his throat.

"Who?" Vance demanded, his voice barely louder than a whisper, yet carrying the weight of a death sentence.

"Dominic Moretti," Luca roared, his voice echoing off the corrugated iron walls.

"Mateo's father!"

"Dominic was the inside man who opened the blast doors for Vincent's shooters!"

"Mateo has known for three years, and he brought you here today to destroy the original record so you would never learn that his father put the crosshairs on your family!"

Up on the catwalk, Mateo took a stumbling step backward, his eyes wild with terror.

"It's a lie!" Mateo screamed, his voice cracking into sheer panic.

"He forged it! Luca forged the handwriting to turn you against me!"

Julian Vance did not look up at Mateo.

He slowly turned his head toward Vincent in the wheelchair, his gaze piercing into the patriarch’s sunken eyes.

"Vincent," Vance asked, his voice shaking with lethal gravity.

"Is it true?"

Vincent looked up, his pale blue eyes clear and devoid of deceit for the first time in forty years.

"Dominic took the money, Julian," the old man confessed, his voice breaking.

"Dominic disabled the alarm."

"Your father trusted Dominic more than anyone... and Dominic sold him out for a quarter of a million dollars."

A terrifying, unnatural calm settled over Julian Vance’s face.

He slowly reached into his trench coat, pulled out a small tactical radio, and spoke a single word into the channel.

"Terminate."

High above on the catwalk, two of the guards standing beside Mateo suddenly drew silenced sidearms and fired four rapid rounds directly into Mateo’s personal security detail.

The bodies collapsed against the iron grating with heavy, hollow thuds.

Mateo shrieked, scrambling backward on his hands and knees, clawing at the steel floor plates as he realized the horrifying truth.

Vance had placed his own operatives within Mateo’s security team days ago.

Mateo had never been a partner.

He had been a marked man walking into his own slaughterhouse.

"No! Please!" Mateo begged, pressing his back against the corrugated metal wall.

"Vance, please! I didn't know! It was my father, not me!"

"You carry his blood, Mateo," Vance spoke with icy indifference.

"And you carry his greed."

The operative standing over Mateo raised his weapon, leveling the barrel between Mateo’s eyes.

In that split second of total shock, Mateo reached out with blind, animal desperation and yanked the emergency manual release lever of the industrial chain hoist.

The heavy hemp rope tore through the pulleys with a deafening screech of friction.

The iron chair holding Leo began falling violently toward the concrete floor twenty feet below.
