Chapter 7 - The Secrets of the Panic Vault

The realization struck Julia like a physical blow.
She pressed her hand against her mouth, trying to choke back the sob that threatened to tear through her chest.
The memory of the charred hallway, the melted photo frames, and the white sheet over her mother's stretcher rushed back with suffocating intensity.
Her entire life had been built upon a manufactured lie.
"Why?" Julia whispered, her voice shaking with righteous fury.
"Why kill an innocent woman who only wanted to protect a child?"
"Because Karen Bennett kept receipts," Vance replied, stepping fully into the library.
"She kept an unedited ledger of every dirty dollar that flowed from the harbor syndicates into Harlan's offshore accounts."
"Elena saw the bagmen."
"Karen found the bank accounts."
"And between the two of them, they signed their own death warrants."
Adrian stepped forward, his cold eyes burning with a rage that could scorch the city.
"If my wife knew Harlan was targeting our family, why didn't she come to me?" Adrian demanded.
"Why run into the woods like a frightened animal?"
"Because Harlan convinced her that you were in on it, Adrian," Vance said, his voice cutting through the tension.
Adrian flinched as if struck by a whip.
"What?"
"Harlan forged corporate shipping manifests bearing your signature," Vance explained.
"He made it look like the Russo shipping lines were moving the illicit shipments of weapons and cash."
"Elena thought her own husband was funding the very monsters who wanted her dead."
"She didn't run from the mob, Adrian."
"She ran from you because she believed you had betrayed her and Ava."
Adrian's face went completely pale.
A deep, agonizing groan escaped his lips as he grasped the edge of the mahogany desk.
The empire he had built, the millions he had amassed, the blood he had spilled—none of it had protected his wife from a whisper campaign of lies.
"She died believing I was a monster," Adrian muttered, his knuckles turning stark white against the wood.
"She didn't die believing that," Vance said, his voice softening slightly.
"Before Karen died, she uncovered the forgery."
"Karen proved to Elena that your signature on the manifests had been traced from an old municipal dock lease."
"Elena was planning to come home."
"She was preparing to bring Ava back to you two years ago."
"Then the northern safehouse was attacked," Cross muttered from the corner, his voice trembling.
Vance rounded on Cross, grabbing the collar of his uniform and hauling him to his feet.
"Because you leaked the address, didn't you, Daniel?" Vance growled.
"You took twenty thousand dollars from Harlan to pay off your gambling debts, and you gave up the coordinates."
Cross wept, shaking his head frantically.
"I didn't know they were going to burn the house!" Cross sobbed.
"Harlan told me they just wanted to talk to her!"
"They wanted to offer her a settlement!"
"You gave them a woman and a child, you coward," Vance spat, shoving Cross violently into the leather armchair.
Ava pulled on Julia’s sleeve, pointing a trembling finger toward the desk.
"The little key," Ava whispered.
"Mom said the key goes in the locker before the bad men find the lighthouse."
Adrian’s head snapped toward his daughter.
"What lighthouse, Ava?"
"The one where the bell rings when the fog comes," Ava answered innocently.
"Where Mom made pancakes on the little gas stove."
Vance stared at Ava, his eyes widening in complete shock.
"She took her to Cape Saint Jude," Vance muttered beneath his breath.
"Elena survived the northern safehouse attack."
"What did you just say?" Adrian roared, crossing the floor in two massive strides.
"Elena got out," Vance insisted, his eyes alight with urgent certainty.
"Karen had an auxiliary protocol."
"If the primary safehouse was compromised, Karen was supposed to move Elena to the old lighthouse keeper’s cottage on Cape Saint Jude."
"And that key on your desk," Vance added, pointing at the brass key marked 214, "opens the locker containing the master deed and the original dispatch tapes."
"If we want the truth, we have to get to the Fourth Avenue bus terminal before Harlan’s main force intercepts us."
Adrian picked up the key and slid it into his pocket, his eyes hardening into flint.
"We move now," Adrian declared, pressing a hidden switch beneath his desk.
A section of the heavy oak bookshelf swung silently inward, revealing a reinforced steel security door.

"The estate is surrounded by Harlan's men," Adrian said, looking at Julia and Ava.
"We take the underground utility tunnel to the riverfront garage."
