Chapter 2 – Buried Truths

Within twenty minutes, the ballroom had transformed into something resembling a courtroom.
Police investigators arrived.
Government officials remained seated.
No guest dared leave.
Nathan's old military contacts had already begun searching classified archives.
One young officer hurried inside carrying a tablet.
"Sir."
Nathan accepted it.
The screen displayed a recently declassified file.
Operation Phoenix.
Status:
Captain Daniel Brooks — Killed in Action.
Wife: Dr. Sarah Brooks — Confirmed Deceased.
Child:
Emily Brooks.
Status:
Missing.
Nathan turned the screen toward Lena.
She covered her mouth.
Tears streamed silently down her face.
For years she had wondered why no one wanted her.
Now she learned the truth.
Someone had taken her family away.
Meanwhile, another investigator approached Nathan.
"General..."
"We found something else."
He handed over another document.
Nathan's expression darkened.
"The witness statements were altered."
"The evidence from the original investigation disappeared."
Someone inside the government had buried the case.
Nathan slowly looked across the ballroom.
"There was a reason this child disappeared."
His eyes stopped on one particular guest.
Victor Langley.
A billionaire businessman.
Longtime family friend of the Ashcrofts.
Victor immediately looked away.
Nathan noticed.
"So..."
"You still remember me."
Victor forced a laugh.
"I have no idea what you're talking about."
Nathan spoke quietly.
"Twenty-four years ago you supplied military equipment."
"You were under investigation."
Victor's smile vanished.
"You bribed officials."
"You destroyed evidence."
"And Captain Brooks refused to stay silent."
The ballroom erupted into whispers.
Victor suddenly stood.
"This is ridiculous."
"I'm leaving."
Two police officers blocked the exit.
Nathan's voice remained calm.
"No."
"You're finally staying."
Meanwhile Evelyn slowly backed away.
She had wanted only to humiliate her daughter-in-law.
Instead she had walked directly into the reopening of one of the country's darkest military scandals.
Then another surprise arrived.
A forensic expert entered carrying a small envelope.
"We analyzed the medal."
Nathan looked up.
"The blood inside the engraving..."
Everyone frowned.
"There was dried blood preserved beneath the metal."
Nathan already understood.
DNA.
He nodded.
"Run the comparison."
Lena held her sleeping daughter tighter.
For the first time in her life...

She wasn't searching for answers anymore.
The answers were finally searching for her.
