Chapter 6 - The Cliffside Estate and Family Ghosts

The Russo estate loomed out of the fog like a gothic fortress perched atop jagged cliffs overlooking the churning Atlantic. Wrought-iron gates swung open automatically as our boat docked at the private cove below, and a fleet of black SUVs escorted us up the winding, tree-lined driveway. The main house was a sprawling stone mansion steeped in old-world Italian architecture, surrounded by manicured gardens and patrolled by an invisible army of loyal guards.

Inside, the atmosphere was warm, smelling of polished mahogany, old books, and roasting herbs. Yet, the emotional weight inside the walls was palpable.

“Elena!” A sharp, elegant voice echoed from the grand staircase.

An older woman with silver-streaked dark hair and piercing eyes identical to Dante’s descended the steps. Lucia Russo—Dante’s mother and the true matriarch of the syndicate. She took in the sight of us: Dante, disheveled and fierce, and me, standing behind him in an oversized wool jacket and cheap sneakers.

“Mother,” Dante greeted, stepping forward to kiss her cheek. “We were hit. A federal-backed operation inside La Stella.”

Lucia’s gaze shifted entirely to me. She walked over, her steps measured and deliberate, stopping just inches away. She reached out, her cool fingers lifting my chin to inspect my face. I didn't pull away.

“You’re the waitress,” Lucia said, her voice carrying a surprising lack of hostility. In fact, a faint, approving spark lit her dark eyes. “Dante tells me you saved his life.”

“I just reacted, Mrs. Russo,” I said evenly, meeting her gaze without flinching.

Lucia let out a low chuckle, dropping her hand. “My son is surrounded by lions who charge millions to protect him, and it takes a grieving girl with a tray of wine to save his neck. Perhaps you should be running the family business.” She turned to Dante. “Get her cleaned up. The house is secure, but the traitor inside our ranks hasn't been unmasked yet. We dine in an hour.”

Dante led me up to a sprawling guest suite overlooking the ocean. The room was luxurious, filled with velvet draperies, a massive antique bed, and a private bathroom stocked with designer clothes and toiletries.

“My mother likes you,” Dante noted, leaning against the doorframe as I walked in. “That usually takes people years.”

“Your mother terrifies me,” I corrected honestly, walking over to look out the tall glass windows at the crashing waves below.

“Everyone in East Harbor should be terrified of her,” Dante said softly. He stepped into the room, closing the distance between us until he was standing right behind me. His reflection stared back at us in the glass. “When my father died, she’s the one who held the syndicate together with an iron fist until I was old enough to take the reins. She knows every secret this city holds.”

“And what about your secrets, Dante?” I asked, turning around to face him. The proximity was intoxicating, the scent of cedar and rain filling my senses. “Why did you really bring me here? It’s not just because I'm a witness. You could have hidden me in a safehouse downtown.”

Dante reached out, his hand gently tracing the small scar above my right eyebrow—the one from my childhood fall. His touch was feather-light, sending a shiver down my spine. “Because from the moment I looked up at table seven and saw you standing there, unaffected by my reputation, unblinded by my money... I knew I couldn't let you out of my sight.”

Before I could process the words, a knock at the door interrupted us. Vincenzo’s voice filtered through the wood. “Boss, we decrypted the tracking virus from the federal agent's device. We found out who ordered the hit.”
