Chapter 5 - The Midnight Arrest and the Fall of Marcus Vance

Downstairs in the Grand Ballroom, the initial panic had transformed into a sullen, nervous restlessness. Guests whispered in anxious huddles near the bar, nursing expensive scotch while nervously eyeing the heavy double doors. The illusion of untouchable wealth had shattered; without the Sterling Trust functioning smoothly, stock prices for affiliated companies were projected to open fifty points down when the Tokyo exchange opened in a few hours.
Marcus Vance was pacing near the floor-to-ceiling windows, his phone pressed tightly against his ear, his voice rising in frantic desperation. "What do you mean the accounts are frozen? By whose authority? I’m the senior legal counsel—"
Before he could finish his sentence, the heavy mahogany doors of the ballroom swung open with a resounding crash. Four uniformed local police officers, led by Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Thorne—a veteran investigator known for his absolute incorruptibility—marched into the room. Behind them strode Victor Vance, carrying a sleek metal briefcase.
The music stopped entirely. Every eye in the room turned toward the entrance.
Detective Inspector Thorne walked with deliberate, heavy steps directly toward Marcus Vance. Marcus lowered his phone, his face draining of all color as he recognized the badges and the federal warrant in Thorne’s hand.
"Marcus Vance," Thorne’s voice boomed across the silent ballroom, clear and authoritative. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, wiretapping, conspiracy to commit extortion, and attempted embezzlement of Sterling Trust assets."
"This is an outrage!" Marcus stammered, stepping backward until his back hit the glass pane. "You have no jurisdiction! This is a private family matter! Where is Eleanor? I demand to speak to Eleanor Sterling immediately!"
"Eleanor Sterling sends her regards," Victor Vance replied coldly, stepping forward and snapping open his briefcase to reveal copies of the incriminating Swiss bank statements. "And she also provided these, detailing every single dollar you and my brother tried to siphon out of the shipping reserves over the past thirty-six months."

Handcuffs flashed under the crystal chandeliers. With brutal efficiency, the officers seized Marcus Vance by the arms, reading him his rights as they dragged him backward across the polished marble floor where, only an hour before, he had toasted to his impending takeover of the dynasty. High-society women gasped and turned their faces away, while powerful executives hastily backed into the shadows, terrified that their own names might appear on the next page of the police report.
Elena, still kneeling near the center of the room in her ruined white wedding dress, watched the arrest with hollow, unblinking eyes. The realization hit her with sickening finality: she was entirely alone. The allies she had bought with false promises had vanished, Marcus was in handcuffs, and the matriarch she had tried to destroy was holding all the cards.
