Chapter 1 - The House of Silences

Ricardo Aranda lived in a massive residence in Lomas de Chapultepec. It was a fortress adorned with Italian stained glass, heavily guarded by bodyguards, maintained by a driver, a cook, and a gardener. He owned construction companies spanning three states. In the newspapers, he was called "the businessman who never makes mistakes." But within his own home, his two daughters were fading away, and he had no idea how to save them.

Sofía was seven. Regina was just five. Since Inés, their mother, died in a tragic car crash on the Mexico-Cuernavaca highway, the girls had changed. They had stopped running through the wide, echoing halls. They no longer asked for chocolate cake on Sunday afternoons. They didn't want anyone closing the door to their room anymore. The darkness terrified them. The silence terrified them even more.

Ricardo couldn't stand to see them cry. The grief in their eyes mirrored his own, reflecting a pain he was too terrified to face. So he did what was easiest for a man with money but no words. He hired more help. He bought more expensive toys. He paid for the best child therapists in the city. And then, he threw himself entirely into his work, leaving before they woke and returning after they slept.

The only one who seemed to truly understand the girls was Lupita. She was the housekeeper who had come from a small town in Puebla to cook and clean. But somewhere along the way, she ended up learning to read their silences.

She knew Regina needed to sleep with a little green star-shaped light by the window. She knew Sofía hid letters addressed to her mom inside a faded shoebox under her bed. She knew neither of them could hear the distant wail of ambulances without covering their ears and shaking.

Lupita didn’t invade their space. She didn’t overstep her boundaries. She didn’t act important or demand their affection. She just was. She was a quiet, steady presence in a house that felt like it was crumbling from the inside.

And that was exactly what Bárbara, Ricardo's new girlfriend, could not tolerate.

Bárbara was impeccable. She had perfectly manicured nails, wore designer perfume that lingered too long in the hallways, and had a smile that seemed pretty until you heard the words slipping through her teeth. "That woman is getting too comfortable," she kept repeating to Ricardo over dinner. "The girls listen to her more than they do to you, Ricardo. Seriously, that’s not normal. She’s just a maid."

Ricardo tried not to hear her. He wanted peace. But Bárbara knew exactly how to plant seeds of doubt in a guilty father's mind.

One night, she left a sleek black folder on his mahogany desk. Inside were printed photographs, captured from the home's security feeds. Lupita entering the girls' room late at night. Lupita hugging Regina tightly on the staircase. Lupita sitting on the floor while Sofía cried into her shoulder. Lupita opening a drawer in Ricardo's private study.

"Look closely," Bárbara whispered, standing behind his leather chair, her hands on his shoulders. "First, she wins over your vulnerable daughters. Then she digs into your private stuff. Soon, she’ll want to run this entire house. She's manipulating them against us."

Ricardo felt a heavy blow to his chest. A part of him wanted to defend Lupita. He knew, deep down, she was kind. But another, more cowardly part of him, preferred to believe the problem was her. It was easier to blame the nanny than to admit his own absence as a father was destroying his children. He needed to know the truth. So, the millionaire who never made mistakes decided to set a trap.
