Chapter 8 - THE NEW DAWN IN WESTCHESTER

“You read my journal, didn't you?” she asked, crossing her arms over her chest, though there was no anger in her tone—only a quiet, knowing amusement.

“I did,” I admitted, looking down at my shoes before meeting her gaze head-on. “And you were right about everything. I was wearing my grief like armor. I fired the wrong person, I listened to the wrong voice, and I nearly robbed my sons of the only person who treated them like children instead of medical cases.”

Marin uncrossed her arms and stepped aside, opening the door wider to let the Vermont breeze sweep across the porch. “Well, Mr. Hales, it’s a good thing I never unpacked my bags.”

Owen, sensing the familiar warmth in her voice, reached his little arms out toward her and let out a happy squeal. Without hesitation, Marin stepped forward and scooped him up into her arms, balancing Ellis against her hip with practiced ease—just like she had done in the living room back in Westchester.

I watched them, my chest aching not with fear or jealousy, but with a profound, overwhelming sense of grace.

Three days later, we returned home.

The Westchester house hadn't changed structurally, but its soul had finally been restored. The heavy, half-drawn curtains were pulled back wide, flooding every room with golden afternoon sunlight. Elena’s old woven throw was back on the armchair. Wooden blocks were scattered across the living room rug, waiting for little hands to pick them up.

That evening, I didn't retreat to my home office with my spreadsheets. Instead, I sat down on the living room floor next to Marin, watching as Owen stood up on his own two feet—not with trembling hesitation, but with a bright, fearless laugh that echoed off the walls and chased away the shadows for good.

I looked at Marin, then down at my boys, and for the first time in a full year, I smiled. The flight to Chicago was a lie I had invented to catch a spy, but the journey home was the most honest thing I had ever done.
